Key Concepts
The voyages that began in 1492 did more than redraw maps. They reconnected two halves of the planet that had been biologically separate for roughly ten thousand years, and the reconnection set off a transfer of plants, animals, microbes, and people so consequential that historians simply call it the Columbian Exchange. The exchange ran in both directions across the Atlantic, but it never ran symmetrically. Europe and Africa received caloric uplift; the Americas received catastrophe (KC-1.2.I.B, KC-1.2.II.A).
Moving west across the Atlantic to the Americas were the staples of the Eurasian agricultural package. Cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, and goats arrived on Spanish ships and reproduced in environments that had no comparable large grazing animals; within a century, feral cattle blanketed the pampas of South America, and horses that escaped Spanish settlements in New Mexico were already reaching the southern Plains by the early seventeenth century. Sugar cane, wheat, rice, and citrus came as well, and the sugar plantation, perfected by Portuguese planters on Atlantic islands such as Madeira, was carried to Hispaniola and Brazil and became the engine that would soon demand enslaved African labor at industrial scale (KC-1.2.II.A). But the most consequential cargo on every Spanish ship was invisible. Smallpox, measles, influenza, typhus, and malaria traveled west with crews and livestock, and they entered Indigenous populations that had no immunological history of any of them. Estimates of the resulting demographic loss vary by region, but the lower bound across the first century of contact sits near fifty percent and the upper bound approaches ninety percent. No battlefield campaign in human history has matched that toll.
Moving east across the Atlantic to Europe and Africa were the American staples that would reorganize Old World agriculture. Maize, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, cassava, peppers, tobacco, and cacao all crossed the ocean within a century of Columbus's first voyage. Maize and potatoes mattered most. Both produced more calories per acre than any European cereal, both grew in soils and climates where wheat would not, and both could be stored. The result was a population explosion that historians link directly to the caloric uplift of American crops: the population of Europe roughly doubled between 1500 and 1800, and northern China, fed by maize and sweet potatoes, did the same (KC-1.2.I.B). Cassava, carried by Portuguese traders to West and Central Africa, became a famine crop that also reshaped African agriculture for centuries. The eastward exchange was not entirely benign, however. Syphilis, whose pre-Columbian distribution remains debated by paleopathologists, moved through European cities in epidemic form during the 1490s, and tobacco carried health consequences that would only be recognized centuries later (KC-1.2.I.C). Maritime technology and commercial organization, including improved navigational instruments and the joint-stock company, made the routine ocean crossings that all of this depended on possible (KC-1.2.I.C).
The Spanish empire that delivered most of this exchange in its first half-century was not a planned colonial project. It was an opportunistic system built on the back of two stunningly fast military campaigns and the demographic catastrophe described above. Between 1519 and 1521, Hernan Cortes led roughly six hundred Spanish soldiers from the Cuban coast inland to the Mexica capital of Tenochtitlan, a city of perhaps two hundred thousand residents that was larger than any European capital of the day. Cortes did not conquer the Aztec Empire alone or by Spanish arms alone. He recruited tens of thousands of Tlaxcalan, Totonac, and other Indigenous allies who resented Mexica tribute demands; he exploited factional divisions inside Tenochtitlan itself; and he benefited from a smallpox epidemic that ripped through the city during the siege of 1520 to 1521, killing the Mexica leader Cuitlahuac and an enormous share of the city's defenders. When the city finally fell, the dead numbered in the tens of thousands and the surviving Mexica nobility was absorbed into a hybrid colonial elite (KC-1.2.II.A).
The conquest of the Inca Empire followed the same pattern at greater scale. In 1532, Francisco Pizarro landed on the Peruvian coast with one hundred sixty-eight men and arrived at Cajamarca during a civil war between the Inca half-brothers Atahualpa and Huascar. Pizarro captured Atahualpa at a staged meeting, ransomed him for a room of gold and two of silver, and then executed him. By 1533, Spanish forces had occupied the Inca capital at Cuzco and begun installing a colonial administration. As in Mexico, smallpox had arrived ahead of Pizarro: the same epidemic chain that swept through the Caribbean and Central America had already reached the Andes by the 1520s and killed the Inca emperor Huayna Capac, triggering the very civil war that Pizarro exploited. Disease, alliance politics, and Spanish military advantages compounded into outcomes that no Indigenous state could have anticipated (Theme GEO).
Out of these two campaigns the Spanish Crown built a colonial structure that would govern Spanish America for nearly three centuries. The encomienda system granted conquistadors the right to demand labor and tribute from Indigenous communities, nominally in exchange for Christian instruction; in practice it functioned as a forced-labor regime that contributed to the demographic collapse already underway. The Council of the Indies, established in 1524 and reorganized in 1542, supervised the empire from Seville, and on the ground a system of viceroyalties, beginning with New Spain in 1535 and Peru in 1542, projected royal authority across two continents. Lesson 1.5 will return to this colonial labor and caste system in detail; the point here is that conquest, disease, and administration moved together.
European observers did not all read these events the same way. From the 1550s onward, a body of Protestant writing in England, the Netherlands, and the German lands portrayed the Spanish empire as uniquely cruel, fanatical, and rapacious, and called this portrait the Black Legend. Its most cited source was the Dominican friar Bartolome de las Casas, whose 1552 Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies compiled eyewitness reports of encomienda atrocities and demanded that the Crown reform the colonial labor system. Las Casas was a Spanish reformer working inside the empire, but his text was rapidly translated, reprinted, and illustrated across Protestant Europe, where Theodor de Bry's late-sixteenth-century engravings turned his prose into images that would shape European imagination of Spain for generations. AP US History students should treat the Black Legend as a contested historiographical frame rather than a verdict: the Spanish empire was demonstrably brutal, the demographic collapse it presided over was real, and at the same time the Black Legend served the propaganda interests of Spain's English and Dutch rivals, who would soon build colonial labor systems with their own atrocities.
The long-term consequences of Topic 1.4 reach across the rest of the AP US History course. The demographic collapse and the labor demands of plantation agriculture combined to push Spanish, and later Portuguese, English, French, and Dutch, traders toward the established West African slave trade, and the first enslaved Africans arrived in Hispaniola as early as 1502. The racial caste system that organized colonial Spanish American society, the sistema de castas, took shape in response to the demographic mixing that conquest and slavery produced; that system is the focus of Lesson 1.5. And the European population boom fueled by American crops (KC-1.2.I.B) provided the demographic surplus that would carry English colonists to Jamestown in 1607 and beyond. Read across these horizons, the Columbian Exchange is not a side topic of Period 1; it is the engine of nearly everything that follows.

The four sources below let students practice Skill 3.A by identifying the claim each author or image advances and then weighing the evidence each one offers. Each source represents a different vantage on the same century: a Spanish military commander writing to his king, an Indigenous Nahua collaborative recovering a defeated city's memory, a European map fixing the conquered city in print, and a Protestant engraver retelling Spanish atrocity for foreign readers.
Hernan Cortes, Second Letter to Charles V, 1520
"This great city of Tenochtitlan is built on the salt lake. From the mainland to the body of the city it is a distance of two leagues by any of the four causeways that lead to it. The city is as large as Seville or Cordoba. The principal streets are very wide and very straight. Some of these, and all the smaller ones, are made one-half of earth, and the other half is a canal on which they go in their canoes."
Cortes wrote five long letters to Charles V between 1519 and 1526; the second, sent in October 1520 just before the final siege of Tenochtitlan, is the most quoted. Read for claim and evidence, the passage advances two arguments at once. The first is geographic: the Mexica capital is real, vast, and orderly, and Cortes documents that fact to legitimize the scale of the conquest he is requesting royal approval for. The second is implicit and political: a city this large can only be governed by a state worthy of being absorbed into the Spanish Crown, not destroyed. Students should also notice what the letter omits, including the Tlaxcalan alliance that made Cortes's campaign possible.

"It was in the month of Tepeilhuitl that it began. There spread over the people a great destruction. Some it covered everywhere, on the face, on the head, on the chest. Many died of it, and many could not walk; they only lay in their abodes, in their beds. They could not move. They could not stir. And many died only of hunger. There was death by famine; there was no one to take care of another."
The Florentine Codex is a twelve-book ethnography of Mexica life compiled by the Franciscan friar Bernardino de Sahagun and dictated by Indigenous elders and trilingual student-scribes in Nahuatl, Spanish, and pictorial form. Book 12 narrates the conquest of Tenochtitlan from the Mexica side, and the smallpox passage above is the most cited eyewitness account of the 1520 epidemic anywhere in the historical record. Read for Skill 3.A, the passage advances a causal claim: the city did not fall to Spanish arms alone, it fell because disease emptied its households of defenders and caretakers at the moment of siege. The Codex is also a methodological document: it was assembled through interviews with Nahua informants forty years after the events, and the layered authorship complicates any simple reading.

The Nuremberg map is the first European-printed image of an American city, published only three years after Tenochtitlan fell. Read for claim and evidence, the map advances a complicated argument. Its level of architectural detail, including the temple precinct and the four causeways radiating from a central island, must come from Indigenous sources, probably an underlying Nahua codex carried back to Europe with Cortes's letters. Yet the map's framing, including the European compass rose, the Latin labels, and its visual marriage to a Gulf coastline, fixes the city inside a Spanish imperial geography even as the city itself is being demolished and rebuilt as colonial Mexico City.

Theodor de Bry was a Protestant engraver in Frankfurt whose family workshop reproduced and illustrated nearly every major early account of the Americas for European readers. The 1598 plates that accompany the Latin edition of Las Casas turn his written denunciations into images that European audiences could not unsee, and they became the visual core of the Black Legend for two centuries. Read for Skill 3.A, the engravings advance the same claim Las Casas advanced in prose: that Spanish colonization in the Americas was uniquely cruel and demanded reform. They also advance a second claim by virtue of their context: that the Protestant nations of Europe were morally superior to Catholic Spain, a claim that served the colonial ambitions of de Bry's own English and Dutch readers.

Classroom Activities
Two-Way Atlantic Chart
Project a horizontal Atlantic Ocean across the board. In pairs, students assign each item from a master list (cattle, horses, smallpox, maize, potatoes, sugar cane, cassava, syphilis, tobacco, wheat) to its direction of travel and to a one-line consequence on the receiving side. Class then ranks the three most consequential transfers and defends the ranking.
Conquest Causation Web
Provide a blank causation diagram with the fall of Tenochtitlan at the center. Students populate three feeder branches (military technology, alliance politics, disease) with at least two pieces of specific evidence each, drawn from the lesson narrative and Cortes's Second Letter. Each group presents the branch they think mattered most.
Reading the Black Legend
Distribute one de Bry engraving and a brief excerpt from Las Casas. Students complete a Skill 3.A graphic organizer identifying claim, evidence, and audience for each source, then write a one-paragraph answer to the question of whether the engravings change Las Casas's argument or amplify it.
