- Cite at least three examples of time-space compression from the past 200 years and explain how each shrank the effective distance between places.
Key Concepts
The CED is concise on this topic: per EK PSO-1.A.1, "spatial concepts include absolute and relative location, space, place, flows, distance decay, time-space compression, and pattern." That single sentence covers eight separate ideas that the rest of AP HG will use as foundational vocabulary. This lesson defines each one carefully and gives a concrete example.
Most students confuse the first four concepts (location, place, space, distance) on first exposure. The trick: location answers "where?", space answers "how much room and what shape?", place answers "what is here that gives it meaning?", and distance answers "how far?" These four work together but mean different things.
The next four concepts — flows, distance decay, time-space compression, and pattern — describe how locations and places relate to each other across space and over time. They are the dynamics of geography.
Tobler's First Law captures distance decay: interaction between two places diminishes as the distance between them grows. You eat at the restaurant down the block more often than the one across town. You marry someone from your home country (or even your home region) more often than someone from a randomly chosen country. The pattern repeats at every scale of human activity.
But distance is not fixed. Time-space compression describes how technology — sailing ships, railways, telegraph, jet travel, the internet — has shrunk the effective time between places. London to New York took six weeks by sail in 1850, six days by steamer in 1900, six hours by jet today, and six milliseconds by video call. The places have not moved; the time between them has collapsed.

Singapore's relative location — controlling the Strait of Malacca, the world's busiest oil-shipment chokepoint — explains its outsized economic and geopolitical weight. Absolute location matters less; relative location is everything.

Japan
Time-space compression in concrete form. The Shinkansen reduced Tokyo-Osaka travel from 6.5 hours to 4 (1964) and now to 2.5 hours. Cities along the line consolidated into a single mega-region, and the political map of central Japan changed with the schedule.

- Tobler's First Law (distance decay) was stated in 1970, before the internet. Does it still hold for online interactions, or has time-space compression broken it?
- Singapore's significance comes almost entirely from relative location. Pick another country whose absolute location matters less than its relative location, and defend your choice.
- Distinguish between space and place using your school as the example. What features of your school make it a "place" rather than just a "space"?
- The Shinkansen in Japan is a textbook case of time-space compression. What second-order effects has it had on smaller cities along the line that are not "compressed" by the network?
- Spatial pattern can be clustered, dispersed, linear, or random. Pick a feature in your community (gas stations, churches, schools) and identify the pattern. What forces produce it?
Classroom Activities
Eight-Concept Quick-Sort
Hand each student a list of 24 short scenarios (e.g., "GPS coordinates of the Eiffel Tower," "the meaning of Mecca to Muslim pilgrims"). They have 15 minutes to label each scenario with the matching spatial concept and discuss disagreements.
Time-Space Compression Timeline
Students build a timeline of one travel route (e.g., London-New York or Beijing-San Francisco) from 1700 to today, showing how transport technology cut journey time decade by decade. They write a paragraph on the political/economic consequences of each major reduction.

Correct: (C). Distance decay would predict more New Jersey trips. The exception is that Manhattan as a "place" carries meaning (shopping district reputation, brand stores) that overrides pure distance.
