Human-Environmental Interaction

Does the environment determine how a society develops? Or does it merely set the menu of possibilities? Geographers spent the 20th century moving from the first answer to the second — with major political and ethical consequences. This lesson tracks both the framework and the case studies.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to (per CED LO PSO-1.B):

  • Define the three CED-named concepts of nature and society: sustainability, natural resources, and land use (per EK PSO-1.B.1).
  • Identify and describe the three pillars of sustainability (economic, social, environmental) and connect them to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Key Concepts

Per CED EK PSO-1.B.1, "concepts of nature and society include sustainability, natural resources, and land use." These three frame how geographers analyze the relationship between human communities and the physical environment. None of them is purely physical or purely social — each is the result of choices that humans make about how to relate to a place.

Sustainability

The most-cited definition comes from the 1987 UN-sponsored Brundtland Report: sustainability is "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Modern frameworks unpack this into three pillars (economic, social, environmental). The 2015 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) operationalize sustainability into 17 measurable global targets to be achieved by 2030.

Natural resources

Geographers distinguish renewable resources (solar, wind, hydropower, sustainably managed timber and fisheries) from non-renewable resources (oil, gas, coal, most metals). The distinction matters for sustainability planning: a country built on extraction has a finite economic lifespan unless it diversifies before depletion. The resource curse — the observation that resource-rich countries often perform worse economically and politically than resource-poor ones — haunts countries from Venezuela to Nigeria. Norway is the famous counterexample: it placed oil revenue into a sovereign wealth fund, now the world's largest at over $1.7 trillion, instead of consumption.

Land use

Land use describes how humans occupy and modify Earth's surface: agricultural (cropland, pasture), urban (residential, commercial, industrial), conservation (parks, reserves, wilderness), extractive (mining, logging, oil and gas), and transportation. Land-use planning is the application of geographic concepts to decisions about what should happen where — one of the oldest applied uses of geography.

Determinism and possibilism

Per CED EK PSO-1.B.2, "theories regarding the interaction of the natural environment with human societies have evolved from environmental determinism to possibilism." This is one of the most important intellectual histories in modern geography — and one of the most politically charged.

Late-19th-century environmental determinism held that the physical environment determines how a society develops. Friedrich Ratzel's Anthropogeographie (1882-91) argued that climate, topography, and soil set the limits of what a culture can become. Ellen Churchill Semple, his American student, popularized determinism in English. Ellsworth Huntington's Civilization and Climate (1915) infamously claimed that temperate climates produced superior civilizations — a claim used to justify European colonialism and racial hierarchy. Modern geography has thoroughly rejected determinism on both empirical and ethical grounds.

Possibilism, articulated by French geographer Paul Vidal de la Blache around 1903, argued the opposite: the environment provides options or constraints, and humans choose how to respond. Two communities in similar environments can develop very different cultures. Possibilism became dominant by the mid-20th century. Modern frameworks like cultural ecology and political ecology extend possibilism by adding power and inequality to the picture — who gets to choose, and whose choices are constrained.

The Three Pillars of Sustainability

Per Brundtland-derived frameworks, sustainability is the simultaneous achievement of three interlocking goals.

Environmental

Maintain or restore ecosystem function. Limit emissions, protect biodiversity, conserve water and soil, manage waste.

Social

Preserve community well-being and equity. Health, education, social cohesion, cultural continuity, intergenerational fairness.

Economic

Produce ongoing economic value. Stable employment, productive investment, fiscal balance, innovation capacity.

Determinism and Possibilism Compared

Per CED EK PSO-1.B.2, geographic theory has evolved from determinism to possibilism. Both schools are testable on the AP exam.

Environmental Determinism

Friedrich Ratzel (1882-91), Ellen Churchill Semple (1911), Ellsworth Huntington (1915)

Position: The physical environment — climate, topography, soil — determines how a society develops. Some environments produce advanced civilizations; others permit only primitive ones.

Status: Discredited. Used to justify European colonialism and racial hierarchy. Empirically wrong: similar environments produce vastly different societies.

Possibilism

Paul Vidal de la Blache (~1903), French school of geography

Position: The physical environment provides a set of options or constraints. Humans choose how to respond. Two communities in similar environments can develop very different cultures.

Status: Dominant since the mid-20th century. Extended by cultural ecology and political ecology, which add questions of power and inequality.

Discussion Questions

  1. Environmental determinism was used to justify European colonialism well into the 20th century. What was empirically wrong with the theory, and what were its political consequences?
  2. Norway and DR Congo are both resource-rich. One thrives; one struggles. What does the comparison tell us about whether geography is destiny?
  3. Costa Rica chose conservation and renewable energy. What environmental and political conditions made that choice possible, and would the same choice work for a country with a much larger population or different terrain?
  4. The Brundtland definition of sustainability is widely cited and widely vague. Identify two ways it leaves enforcement and trade-offs ambiguous, and propose a more specific definition.
  5. Cultural ecology and political ecology extend possibilism. What do they add? Use one current environmental controversy (deforestation in Indonesia, water in the US Southwest) to illustrate.
