Malthus, Population, and the Future

In 1798 Thomas Malthus predicted population would outrun food. He was wrong — but the debate he started about carrying capacity is still very much alive. This lesson tracks Malthus, his critics, and what the modern argument has become.

Key Concepts

In 1798 the English clergyman Thomas Robert Malthus published An Essay on the Principle of Population. His argument was simple and bleak. Human population, when unchecked, doubles every 25 years — growing geometrically (1, 2, 4, 8, 16). Food production, by contrast, can only grow arithmetically (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) because there is only so much land. Sooner or later, population must outrun food, producing famine, disease, and war — what Malthus called positive checks. The only humane alternative, he wrote, was preventive checks: later marriage, sexual restraint, smaller families.

Malthus has been wrong, so far, in detail. World population grew from about 1 billion in his time to 8 billion today, and the global average person eats more calories than at any point in human history. Three things he could not foresee: the agricultural revolutions (especially the 1960s Green Revolution that tripled grain yields), the fertility decline that came with industrialization (the Demographic Transition), and global trade that lets food travel from surplus regions to deficit regions.

But the Malthusian frame keeps returning. Neo-Malthusians argue the same logic still applies, just at a longer time scale and with new constraints: not just food but freshwater, arable soil, biodiversity, and atmospheric carbon. The Club of Rome's 1972 Limits to Growth report and Paul Ehrlich's 1968 Population Bomb are the most-cited modern Malthusian works. Their famine-by-1985 predictions failed; their broader concern about planetary limits has aged better.

The leading anti-Malthusian arguments are also worth knowing. Esther Boserup (Danish economist, 1965) argued the opposite: population pressure spurs agricultural innovation, not collapse. When more people need to be fed, societies invent better farming. Julian Simon (American economist, 1981) argued that human ingenuity is the "ultimate resource" — resource scarcity drives innovation that eventually makes the resource cheaper or replaces it entirely. Marxists argue food shortages are problems of distribution and politics, not absolute production.

  1. Malthus assumed population would always grow geometrically. The Demographic Transition Model shows fertility falls as countries develop. Does that finding refute Malthus, or does it just push his argument to a new time scale?
  2. Paul Ehrlich predicted mass famines in the 1970s-80s. What happened instead, and what does that tell us about the reliability of long-term population forecasts?
  3. Boserup and Simon both argue human innovation removes Malthusian limits. Are there limits innovation cannot overcome? Defend your answer.
  4. Marxist critics argue famines are distribution problems, not production problems. Pick one famous famine (Ireland 1840s, Bengal 1943, Ethiopia 1984) and evaluate this claim.
  5. Some scholars now talk about "planetary boundaries" rather than carrying capacity. What does that reframing change? What does it preserve from the original Malthusian argument?
