Introduction to Agriculture

Climate and physical environment shape what crops can grow where. The CED draws a single primary distinction in farming: intensive vs extensive. Intensive farming concentrates labor and capital on small plots; extensive farming spreads them across large areas. Six CED-named practices — three intensive, three extensive — cover most of world agriculture.

Per CED EK PSO-5.A.1, "agricultural practices are influenced by the physical environment and climatic conditions, such as the Mediterranean climate and tropical climates." Per EKs A.2 and A.3, the CED names exactly six farming practices — three intensive and three extensive — that frame Unit 5's analysis of agricultural geography.

Climate constrains the menu

Climate sets the basic parameters of what can grow where. Tropical climates (consistently warm, abundant rainfall) favor rice, bananas, sugarcane, and cocoa. Mediterranean climates (hot dry summers, mild wet winters) favor olives, grapes, citrus, and wheat. Temperate climates support corn, soybeans, dairy, and a wide range of crops. Arid and semi-arid regions support grazing more easily than crop cultivation. The CED specifically names Mediterranean and tropical climates because they show the strongest crop-climate alignment.

Intensive vs extensive: the central distinction

The most important conceptual move in Topic 5.1 is the intensive/extensive split. Both terms describe the ratio of labor and capital to land:

  • Intensive farming uses a lot of labor or capital per unit of land. Yields per acre are high. Used where land is expensive or scarce. Includes rice paddies, orchards, market gardens, plantations.
  • Extensive farming uses a lot of land per unit of labor or capital. Yields per acre are low, but yields per worker can be high (with mechanization) or moderate (with traditional methods). Used where land is cheap or where physical conditions limit intensive use.

Why these six practices specifically

The CED names exactly six practices in EKs PSO-5.A.2 and PSO-5.A.3. They were chosen because they cover the major patterns in world agriculture and because each is geographically distinctive. Memorize all six names and one country example for each. They appear repeatedly across Unit 5 and on the AP exam.

Climate and Agriculture

Per CED EK PSO-5.A.1, the CED names two climate types specifically. Both have distinctive crop signatures.

Mediterranean Climate

Characteristics: Hot, dry summers; mild, wet winters. Found around the Mediterranean Sea, in California, central Chile, southwestern Australia, and the western Cape of South Africa.

Signature crops Olives, grapes (wine), citrus (lemons, oranges), wheat, cork oak. The Mediterranean diet (olive oil, grains, fruit, fish) follows directly from the climate.

Tropical Climate

Characteristics: Consistently warm year-round; abundant rainfall (tropical wet) or distinct wet/dry seasons (tropical wet-dry). Found near the equator across South America, central Africa, South and Southeast Asia.

Signature crops Rice, bananas, sugarcane, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, tropical fruits. Most modern plantation agriculture exists in tropical climates.

Intensive vs Extensive Farming

The fundamental distinction. Both produce food but use very different geographic strategies.

Intensive Farming

Per CED EK PSO-5.A.2: Concentrates labor or capital on small plots; high yield per unit of land. Common where land is expensive or scarce, or where labor is abundant.

The three CED practices Market gardening: Small-scale fruit and vegetable production for nearby cities. Plantation agriculture: Large estates producing one or two cash crops for export (sugar, coffee, bananas). Mixed crop/livestock: Combined crop and animal production on the same farm; common in the US Midwest.

Extensive Farming

Per CED EK PSO-5.A.3: Spreads labor and capital across large areas; low yield per unit of land. Common where land is cheap or physical conditions (poor soil, low rainfall) limit intensive use.

The three CED practices Shifting cultivation: Slash-and-burn farming where plots are cleared, used briefly, then abandoned for forest regrowth. Nomadic herding: Pastoralists move herds across grazing land seasonally. Ranching: Large-scale livestock raising on commercial pastures (American West, Argentina, Australia).

Three Intensive Practices (per EK PSO-5.A.2)

Intensive #1

Market Gardening

Small-scale fruit and vegetable production for nearby urban markets. High labor intensity, often family-run, focused on perishable produce.

  • Suburban Chinese vegetable plots
Intensive #2

Plantation Agriculture

Large estates producing one or two cash crops for export, usually in the tropics. Historically tied to colonialism and slave or coerced labor; today often corporate.

  • Banana plantations in Central America
  • Sugar in Brazil and the Caribbean
  • Coffee in Colombia and Vietnam
  • Palm oil in Malaysia and Indonesia

Mixed Crop/Livestock

Combined crop and animal production on the same farm. Crops often feed the animals; animal manure fertilizes the crops. Common in temperate climates.

  • US Corn Belt (corn + soybeans + hogs/cattle)

  • Mid-Atlantic dairy + grain operations

Shifting Cultivation

Slash-and-burn farming where plots are cleared by burning, cultivated for a few years until soil fertility declines, then abandoned for natural regrowth (15-30 years).

  • Southeast Asian uplands

Nomadic Herding

Pastoralists move livestock seasonally across grazing land in search of water and forage. Common in arid and semi-arid regions where crop farming is impossible.

Extensive #3

Ranching

Large-scale commercial livestock raising on extensive pastures. Capital-intensive but uses very little labor per acre. Beef cattle dominate; sheep, goats, and others also.

Italy · Mediterranean Climate Match

~12% of EU olive oil production

Italy is the textbook Mediterranean-climate agriculture case. Olive trees, grapes, citrus, and wheat all grow well in the hot dry summers and mild wet winters. The classic Mediterranean diet (olive oil, grain, fruit, fish) is the cuisine that the Italian climate produces. Greece, Spain, southern France, coastal North Africa, California, and central Chile all show similar crop signatures.

Costa Rica · Plantation Agriculture

Costa Rica's tropical climate supports textbook plantation agriculture. Bananas, coffee, pineapples, and palm oil dominate export production. Major US fruit corporations (Chiquita, Dole) operate large plantations. Plantation agriculture is intensive (high labor and capital per acre) but historically tied to colonial exploitation and labor concerns.

Mongolia is one of the few countries where nomadic herding remains a major livelihood for a significant portion of the population. Herders move sheep, goats, cattle, horses, and camels seasonally across the steppe. The traditional ger (yurt) housing is portable; livestock is the main source of food, clothing, and trade goods. Climate change and modernization pressure threaten the practice.

Pampas: ~50M cattle

The Argentine Pampas is one of the world's classic ranching regions. The fertile temperate grasslands support extensive cattle ranching at industrial scale. Argentine beef is a major export and a national cultural identifier (asado, gaucho culture). Compare to the US Great Plains and the Australian Outback — the same extensive ranching pattern in different temperate grasslands.

  1. The CED names exactly two climate types in EK PSO-5.A.1: Mediterranean and tropical. Why these two? What other climate types (temperate, arid, polar, subarctic) shape agriculture, and why doesn't the CED name them?
  2. Distinguish intensive from extensive farming. The same crop (corn) is grown intensively in the US Midwest and extensively in some other regions. What variables determine which approach is used?
  3. Plantation agriculture is listed as an intensive practice. Historically it was associated with colonialism, slavery, and labor exploitation; today it is often corporate. What are the contemporary debates about plantation agriculture (palm oil, bananas, sugar)?
