Key Concepts
CED Topic 5.12 closes Unit 5 by spotlighting the gendered structure of global agriculture. Per CED LO IMP-5.C, students must "explain geographic variations in female roles in food production and consumption." Per the single EK (IMP-5.C.1), "the role of females in food production, distribution, and consumption varies in many places due to different levels of economic development and cultural norms." These two drivers — development and culture — structure this entire lesson.
Why the CED names it
Roughly half the world's subsistence food is produced by women, often on land they do not own using seeds and tools they did not choose, without access to the credit or training offered to their male peers. At a global scale this gender gap is one of the largest single drags on agricultural productivity. Closing the gap could, per FAO estimates, reduce world hunger by around 100-150 million people. This is why CED Topic 5.12 exists as a standalone lesson.
The two CED drivers
EK IMP-5.C.1 explicitly names economic development and cultural norms as the two sources of variation. The first predicts that women's agricultural role differs between subsistence economies (where they often do most of the food production) and commercial economies (where their labor is either waged or invisible). The second predicts that the same level of development produces different outcomes across cultures — Saudi Arabia and Vietnam have similar per-capita GDP but very different female labor-force participation in agriculture.

Of agricultural labor is done by women
Share varies by region; higher in sub-Saharan Africa (~50%), lower in parts of Latin America and East Asia. Includes planting, weeding, harvesting, livestock care, and post-harvest processing.
Of agricultural landholders globally are women
Reflects legal restrictions, customary inheritance rules, and marital property regimes in many regions. Range: from under 5% in parts of South Asia and the Middle East to over 30% in parts of Latin America.
Higher yields if women had equal resource access
FAO estimate: closing the gap in access to land, credit, seeds, fertilizer, and training would raise yields on women-managed farms by 20-30 percent. This translates to 100-150 million fewer hungry people.
Of agricultural labor force is women
Highest regional share globally. Women are the primary producers of many subsistence crops (cassava, sorghum, yams, vegetables). Land rights remain the main barrier in most countries.

Nigeria · Periphery Subsistence
Nigerian women produce the majority of subsistence food crops (yams, cassava, vegetables). In northern Nigeria, customary inheritance limits land ownership; in southern Nigeria, matrilineal systems exist but formal title is often in male names. Yield gaps between male- and female-managed plots run 20-30 percent in recent studies.

Kenya · Semi-Periphery Export Agriculture
Kenya's cut-flower industry (Naivasha) employs tens of thousands of women as low-wage pickers and packers. Women also dominate smallholder tea and coffee production. Legal reform (2010 constitution) grants equal inheritance, but customary practice and land-market dynamics keep ownership share below 10 percent nationally.

India · Cultural Variation
Indian women do a majority of agricultural labor hours — planting, weeding, harvesting, livestock care — but own only ~14 percent of agricultural land. The gap is explicitly cultural as well as economic: inheritance law is gender-neutral but customary practice varies sharply by state and community. A textbook case of EK IMP-5.C.1's cultural-norm driver.

Japan · Core Economy, Aging Women
Japan's rice farming has been depopulated by urbanization. Much of the remaining full-time farm labor is older women, often widows maintaining family plots. Formal gender equality exists; the issue is not exclusion but the aging agricultural population. Different pattern from periphery countries, but still a gendered one.
