Von Thünen Model

In 1826, a German estate owner named Johann Heinrich von Thünen produced the first mathematical model of agricultural geography. His concentric rings arranged farms around a market by transportation cost and distance. It is one of the most-tested models on the AP HG exam — and it still works two centuries later.

Key Concepts

Per CED EK PSO-5.D.1, "von Thünen's model helps to explain rural land use by emphasizing the importance of transportation costs associated with distance from the market; however, regions of specialty farming do not always conform to von Thünen's concentric rings." This single sentence contains both the model's main argument and its main limitation — both are testable.

Who was von Thünen?

Johann Heinrich von Thünen (1783-1850) was a German landowner and economist. He managed the Tellow estate near Rostock, Germany, and spent years analyzing the economics of what to grow where. In 1826 he published Der isolierte Staat (The Isolated State) — one of the first mathematical models in social science. The model predicted where on the landscape each crop would most profitably be grown.

The core logic

Von Thünen's insight: a farmer's profit equals the sale price minus production cost minus transportation cost. Since production cost varies less by location than transportation cost, distance to market becomes the key variable. The closer to market, the lower the transport cost, the higher the profit. But because everyone wants to be close to market, land near it is expensive (bid-rent theory, Topic 5.6). Only uses that are perishable, heavy, or highly profitable per acre can afford it. Everything else is pushed outward.

Why transportation costs?

In 1826, von Thünen was thinking about horse-drawn wagons on dirt roads. Perishable dairy and fresh vegetables had to be close to town or they would spoil. Heavy forestry products (firewood, timber) cost so much to haul that it was not worth shipping them far. Field crops (grain) could survive the journey. Ranching could walk itself to market. The logic extends easily to modern refrigeration, air freight, and trucking — the variables change but the basic cost-distance tradeoff remains.

The Four Rings

Von Thünen's original 1826 model arranged land uses in four concentric rings around a central market. Each ring reflects the logic of distance and transport cost.

Closest to market

Market Gardening & Dairying

Perishable, intensive, high-value-per-acre products. Fresh vegetables, milk, butter, fresh fruit. Needs daily or weekly delivery to market; cannot tolerate long transport.

Ring 2
Near the market

Forestry

In 1826, firewood and construction timber were essential urban inputs. Their heavy weight made transport costly, so forestry sat close to cities. Less relevant in modern economies where fossil fuels displaced firewood.

Mid-distance

Crops (Grain & Field Crops)

Wheat, corn, and other durable field crops. Can store and ship in bulk; less perishable than dairy or vegetables. Moderate land intensity; profitable at medium land cost.

Ring 4 (outermost)
Far from market

Ranching / Livestock

Cattle, sheep, and other grazing animals. Extensive use of cheap outer-ring land. Animals can walk themselves to market or be processed on site; transport cost is minimized.

Assumptions and Limitations

Von Thünen's model is an abstraction. To make his math work, he assumed the world was simpler than it really is. Per EK PSO-5.D.1, "regions of specialty farming do not always conform to von Thünen's concentric rings" — because real geography violates the model's assumptions.

Single isolated market

Von Thünen assumed one central market town with no competitors. In reality most rural areas serve many markets at different distances.

Reality: Multiple markets produce overlapping Thünen zones.

Uniform terrain and climate

The model assumed flat land with uniform soil and climate. Real landscapes have mountains, rivers, coasts, and climate zones that dictate what can grow where.

Reality: Mediterranean climates grow grapes/olives regardless of market distance; tropics grow coffee/bananas.

Uniform transportation

The model assumed transport cost is directly proportional to distance everywhere. In reality rivers, railways, highways, and air freight produce uneven transport cost gradients.

Reality: Refrigerated trucking, air freight, and shipping containers change the math.

Rational profit-maximizing farmers

Von Thünen assumed all farmers make economically optimal decisions. Real farmers respond to subsidies, cultural traditions, risk aversion, and government policy.

Reality: EU and US farm subsidies, Japanese rice support prices, historical cropping traditions all distort the pattern.

Where the model still works

Despite these limitations, the von Thünen pattern is visible at many scales today. Around cities, dairy and market gardens still cluster close. At the national scale, grain belts sit further from coastal markets. Even globally, high-value perishables (Dutch cut flowers, Kenyan fresh vegetables) move by air freight from specialized production areas to wealthy consumer markets — a modern version of von Thünen's logic.

Tellow estate, Mecklenburg, 1820s

The Tellow estate near Rostock is where von Thünen developed the model. In the 1820s, dairying and market gardening sat close to Rostock; forestry was cultivated nearby for firewood; rye, oats, and other field crops occupied the middle zone; sheep grazing extended outward. The original observations remain clear even today in parts of rural Mecklenburg.

Dairy Belt vs Corn Belt vs Great Plains ranching

The US shows a textbook von Thünen pattern at continental scale. Dairying concentrates in the Upper Midwest and Northeast near urban markets. Corn and soybean farming dominates the central Midwest. Wheat and cattle ranching extend across the Great Plains — the outermost "ring" from eastern cities. The fit is imperfect but the gradient is clearly visible.

Kenya illustrates the CED's specialty-farming exception. Kenyan cut flowers (roses, carnations) are grown near Lake Naivasha and air-freighted overnight to European markets 6,500 km away. By von Thünen's logic, perishable flowers should be grown near markets; by climate-and-cost logic, they are grown in Kenya and flown to Europe. The model fails; the specialty exception applies.

The Netherlands behaves like a giant inner-ring of von Thünen's model: hyper-intensive greenhouse vegetables, dairy, cut flowers, and meat near densely populated European consumer markets. High land cost (because of urban proximity) is paid off with extremely high yields per acre. The country is a national-scale demonstration of the inner-ring logic.

  1. Von Thünen wrote in 1826 with horse-drawn transport and no refrigeration. Why does the model still describe agricultural geography in 2026? What has changed, and what has stayed the same?
  2. Per EK PSO-5.D.1, specialty farming regions don't always conform to von Thünen's rings. Pick two specialty crops (coffee, cut flowers, saffron, vanilla) and explain why their location violates the model.
  3. The model assumes uniform terrain. Apply it to an actual city (your own, or one you know). Where would the rings sit? How do rivers, highways, hills, and neighboring cities distort them?
  4. At what geographic scale does von Thünen's model work best: farm-scale, regional, national, or global? Defend your answer with examples.
  5. Modern refrigerated trucking and air freight have dramatically reduced transport costs. Has that made the von Thünen model more or less relevant today? Make a case either way.
