Jimmie Angel: the Aviator Who Gave the Falls Their International Name

The sight must have been extraordinary: looking down from his aircraft, he would have seen the cliff face of the tepui extending below him, and from it the thin, silver thread of water falling through the air in an almost impossibly long drop to the jungle below. It was not until October 9, 1937, however, that Angel returned to the tepui with the intention of actually landing on the summit plateau. How to Visit Angel Falls: the Journey into the Remote

Visiting Angel Falls is not a casual undertaking. The falls are located in one of the most remote regions of Venezuela, accessible only by small aircraft and canoe travel through the roadless wilderness of the Gran Sabana. This remoteness has historically been one of the falls' most powerful qualities — the sense of having traveled to the edge of the world and found something extraordinary waiting there.
