The monument is believed to have been begun around 780 AD and substantially completed by approximately 825 AD — a construction period of roughly 75 years, encompassing perhaps two generations of builders, engineers, artists, and laborers.
The scale of the undertaking was extraordinary by the standards of any civilization. Seen from the air, Borobudur reveals its mandala character immediately: it is a series of concentric squares and circles, centered on the great stupa at the top, enclosed within an outer perimeter wall at the base. But the mandala in this case is not flat; it is vertical, organized not only in plan but in section, so that moving horizontally around the structure is also a symbolic movement outward toward the periphery of reality, while moving vertically upward is a movement toward the center and the transcendent.
The monument's vertical organization follows the threefold division of the Buddhist cosmos. The lowest level is the world of sensory desire and attachment — Kamadhatu, the realm of forms bound by craving and aversion. The middle zone, consisting of five square terraced galleries, represents Rupadhatu — the realm of forms that have been refined of gross sensory desire but still retain shape and visible dimension. The uppermost zone, comprising three circular terraces and the great central stupa at the summit, represents Arupadhatu — the formless realm, beyond shape and category, approaching the ineffable absolute of Nirvana.

The square terraces of the middle zone are enclosed by high stone balustrades that create gallery corridors — covered paths where pilgrims walk and meditate surrounded by carved relief panels depicting scenes from Buddhist scripture. The transition from square to circular at the upper level is a change not merely of geometry but of spiritual register: the square represents the world of defined forms and narrative, while the circle represents the formless, the infinite, the ineffable.
The Levels of the Cosmos
The base of Borobudur — a large square platform measuring approximately 118 by 118 meters — once supported a foot decorated with carved reliefs depicting the realm of Kamadhatu, the world of sensory desire. These carvings on the "hidden foot" of the monument illustrate the Karmavibhangga — a text describing the law of karma, the moral principle that actions have consequences that follow the actor through successive lifetimes. The panels depict scenes of everyday human activity alongside their karmic consequences: good deeds leading to positive rebirths, evil deeds to suffering and degradation. This narrative, carved at the very base of the structure, sets the moral framework for the entire spiritual journey the monument invites its visitors to undertake.
The decision to cover these panels — the entire hidden foot — with an additional layer of stone sometime after the main construction was completed has puzzled scholars for over a century. The most widely accepted explanation is that the outer casing stone was added for structural reasons, to prevent the base from spreading under the weight of the upper terraces, but another theory proposes that the decision to conceal the Karmavibhangga panels was deliberate and spiritual — that in Buddhist teaching the realm of desire, once transcended, should be left behind and not dwelt upon. Whatever the reason, the hidden panels were not discovered until the Dutch colonial restoration efforts of the late nineteenth century, when a portion of the outer casing was temporarily removed to allow their documentation.
Above the base, the five square terraced galleries of the Rupadhatu zone rise in ascending steps. Each gallery corridor is flanked on the inner side by the wall of the terrace above and on the outer side by the balustrade, both surfaces covered with carved relief panels. In their place stand the 72 bell-shaped latticed stupas that are perhaps the monument's most recognizable feature, arranged in concentric rings on the three circular terraces: 32 stupas on the lowest circular terrace, 24 on the middle terrace, and 16 on the uppermost terrace. Each stupa is a perforated stone bell through whose diamond-shaped openings the seated Buddha figure within can be partially seen but not fully revealed — a visual metaphor for the nature of enlightenment, which can be approached but not fully grasped from the perspective of the ordinary world.
At the very summit of Borobudur stands the great central stupa, measuring approximately 9.9 meters in diameter and rising above all the surrounding stupas. Unlike the 72 smaller stupas, the central stupa is solid — without openings, without interior statue, representing the unmanifest, the absolute, the condition of Nirvana beyond all form and representation.

The Karmavibhangga panels on the hidden base, as described above, deal with the principle of karma. Moving upward through the galleries, the narrative programs become progressively more elevated in their spiritual content, tracking the Mahayana Buddhist understanding of the path from ordinary existence to enlightenment.
The Lalitavistara panels, occupying the main wall of the first gallery, present the life story of the historical Gautama Buddha from his miraculous birth in the Lumbini Garden through his early life as Prince Siddhartha, his renunciation of worldly pleasure, his meditation and enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodhgaya, and his first teaching at the Deer Park at Sarnath. The panels of the Lalitavistara are among the finest at Borobudur, combining narrative clarity with great sensitivity in the rendering of individual figures, architectural settings, and landscape details.
The Jataka and Avadana panels, which occupy the largest share of the total relief surface area, present the 547 tales of the Buddha's previous lives — the stories of the various human, animal, and divine forms in which the Bodhisattva accumulated merit and wisdom over countless cycles of rebirth before his final incarnation as Siddhartha Gautama. These tales, beloved throughout the Buddhist world, are depicted at Borobudur with a richness of narrative invention and a delight in the details of everyday life — in food, clothing, architecture, transport, music, and social interaction — that make the Jataka panels an unparalleled documentary of ninth-century Javanese civilization alongside their spiritual content.
The Gandavyuha panels, occupying the upper galleries, present the story of Sudhana — a young pilgrim whose quest for enlightenment takes him on a journey through the universe, meeting and learning from 52 spiritual teachers before achieving his goal. The Gandavyuha is the most philosophically sophisticated of all the narrative programs at Borobudur, presenting the Mahayana Buddhist vision of the universe as an infinitely interconnected web of reality in which every element reflects and contains every other.
The Pilgrim's Path: Walking Through the Cosmos
The experience of visiting Borobudur as it was intended to be experienced is a physical as well as spiritual journey. The monument was designed not simply to be seen but to be circumambulated — walked around and through in a prescribed sequence that mirrors the Buddhist understanding of the path to liberation. A pilgrim arriving at Borobudur enters through the eastern gate at the lowest level and proceeds clockwise around the outer perimeter of each terrace, ascending from one level to the next by means of the stairways at the cardinal points, before finally ascending the open circular terraces to the summit.
This path, if followed in its entirety through every corridor and around every terrace, covers approximately five kilometers. For a practitioner engaging deeply with the sculptural program — studying the relief panels, pausing at each shrine niche to contemplate the Buddha images within, performing the ritual circumambulation with full attention — the journey through Borobudur could occupy many hours or even multiple visits spread across days. The structure was clearly conceived with this possibility in mind: it is not a building to pass through but a world to inhabit, at least temporarily, in the act of devotion and study.
The physical ascent of the monument parallels the spiritual ascent described in Buddhist literature. As the pilgrim rises from the enclosed galleries of the lower and middle levels — where the density of carved imagery and narrative is greatest — to the open, wind-swept circular terraces of the upper zone, the transition is felt in the body as well as perceived by the mind. The enclosure of the galleries gives way to openness; the proliferation of images gives way to emptiness and sky; the narrative complexity of the reliefs gives way to the serene, featureless unity of the stupas and the silent Buddha figures partially visible through their latticed walls. The architecture enacts its cosmological message with extraordinary precision.
The nine levels of the monument — six square and three circular — correspond to several significant numerical systems in Buddhist cosmology. Nine is a number of completeness and spiritual perfection in various Buddhist traditions, and the ten stages of the Bodhisattva's path (the dasa bhumika) that form the framework for the Gandavyuha narrative are represented across the monument's program in ways that scholars are still actively tracing. The mathematical and geometric precision of Borobudur's design has been a subject of scholarly fascination since the monument's detailed study began in the nineteenth century, and analysis of the monument's proportional systems has revealed relationships of remarkable sophistication between the various elements of the design.
The Abandonment of Borobudur
One of the great mysteries of Borobudur is the question of why and when it was abandoned — left to be swallowed by the encroaching jungle and buried under successive falls of volcanic ash until it was all but invisible from the surrounding landscape, its very existence preserved only in scattered local traditions and oral memories.
The historical record is frustratingly incomplete. What is clear is that Borobudur was an active site of Buddhist worship and pilgrimage for several centuries after its completion in the early ninth century, and that at some point — most likely between the tenth and fifteenth centuries — this active use came to an end. The monument was not destroyed but simply ceased to be maintained and used, a process that led gradually to its concealment.
Several factors are believed to have contributed to the abandonment, and scholars debate their relative importance. The shift of political and cultural power from central Java to East Java, which began in the late ninth century and was largely complete by the tenth, removed the Sailendra royal patrons from proximity to the monument and may have led to a decline in the resources devoted to its maintenance. Volcanic eruptions, particularly major events attributed to Mount Merapi or other nearby volcanoes, may have disrupted the region's population and deposited ash falls that covered the monument's lower sections, discouraging access and worship. The gradual spread of Islam across the Javanese population, which accelerated from the thirteenth century onward, replaced Buddhism and Hinduism as the dominant religious frameworks and eliminated the institutional basis for continued Buddhist pilgrimage.
By the time of the first Dutch colonial contact with this part of Java in the seventeenth century, Borobudur had been buried for long enough that it was known to local people only through legend and faint memory. The jungle that grew over its stone terraces was dense enough to make the monument effectively invisible from the air or from any distance, and much of its stone fabric was concealed beneath accumulations of volcanic debris and soil.
Rediscovery and Early Archaeological Work
The story of Borobudur's return to the awareness of the wider world begins in 1811, when the British East India Company seized control of Java from the Dutch during the Napoleonic Wars and appointed Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles as Lieutenant Governor. Raffles — a man of extraordinary intellectual curiosity who during his five years in Java initiated systematic studies of the island's natural history, archaeology, languages, and customs that would eventually be published as the monumental "History of Java" (1817) — received reports from local officials and inhabitants about a great buried monument in the Kedu Plain near the village of Bumisegoro.

Cornelius's survey and the drawings and measurements made by his team provided the foundation for all subsequent scholarly work on Borobudur. Raffles described the monument in his "History of Java" with a mixture of awe and scholarly caution that captures both the excitement of the discovery and the difficulty of interpreting a monument whose historical context had been almost entirely lost. The Dutch colonial government, which regained control of Java in 1816, undertook several further clearing and documentation efforts in the nineteenth century, including a major survey by the artist and draughtsman F.C. Wilsen, who produced detailed drawings of the relief panels, and a comprehensive photographic record made in the 1870s.
The first serious attempt at restoration was undertaken by the Dutch colonial administration under Theodoor van Erp, who worked on the monument between 1907 and 1911. Van Erp's work focused primarily on the upper sections of the monument — the circular terraces and their stupas — where the structural condition was most precarious and the aesthetic impact of restoration was most immediately visible. His team dismantled and reassembled numerous stupas, replaced missing or damaged stones, and made the summit area accessible to visitors in a form approximating its original condition. However, Van Erp lacked the resources and technical means to address the deep structural problems affecting the lower galleries — problems of drainage, foundation instability, and the long-term effects of water penetration into the stone — that would eventually require the far more extensive intervention of the UNESCO restoration.
The Unesco Restoration of 1973 to 1983
The restoration of Borobudur conducted between 1973 and 1983 under the joint auspices of the Indonesian government and UNESCO stands as one of the largest and most complex archaeological conservation projects ever undertaken anywhere in the world. By the mid-twentieth century, it had become clear that Borobudur faced a crisis: decades of uncontrolled tourist access, inadequate maintenance, and — most seriously — the cumulative effects of water penetration into the monument's stone fabric were causing progressive deterioration. Plant growth in cracks between stones was splitting the fabric apart; the drainage system designed by the original builders had become blocked and ineffective; and many of the relief panels were being damaged by the acids produced by biological growth on their surfaces.
The Indonesian government appealed to UNESCO for assistance, and in 1973 a major international campaign was launched. The scope of the work was without precedent: over a period of ten years, the entire monument was systematically dismantled, stone by stone, down to its foundations. Each stone was individually cleaned, catalogued, and treated against biological and chemical deterioration before being replaced in its precisely documented original position. In total, more than one million stones were removed, treated, and replaced — a logistical operation of extraordinary complexity, requiring sophisticated record-keeping, specialized conservation techniques, and the work of thousands of Indonesian workers alongside international specialists.
The restoration also addressed the fundamental drainage problem. A new system of channels and drains was installed within the structure, designed to carry rainwater away from the stone without allowing it to saturate the core of the monument. The foundations were stabilized and the entire monument was made structurally sound for the first time in centuries. When the restoration was completed in 1983, Indonesian President Suharto presided over a ceremony of rededication that drew international attention and marked the beginning of Borobudur's modern life as both a heritage site and an active place of worship.
The UNESCO inscription followed in 1991, placing Borobudur on the World Heritage List alongside its neighboring monuments. The Borobudur Temple Compounds inscribed as a World Heritage property include not only the main Borobudur monument but also two smaller Buddhist temples nearby — Mendut and Pawon — that lie along a traditional processional route from the east, indicating that in antiquity the three monuments formed part of a unified sacred landscape.
Borobudur Today: Visitors, Waisak, and the Living Tradition

Waisak commemorates simultaneously the birth, the enlightenment, and the death of the Gautama Buddha, the three events that in Theravada tradition all occurred on the full moon day of the same lunar month. At Borobudur, the Waisak celebration typically involves a candlelit procession of Buddhist monks and lay practitioners from the Mendut temple, three kilometers to the east, along the ancient processional route to the main monument, where prayers, meditation, and the release of lanterns into the night sky mark the climax of the celebration. Tens of thousands of people — Buddhist pilgrims from across Indonesia and from the Buddhist communities of neighboring countries, along with many non-Buddhist Indonesians who come to witness the spectacle — gather for this event each year.
The fact that Waisak is celebrated with such scale and solemnity in a country where roughly 87 percent of the population is Muslim is a testament to the Indonesian state's commitment to religious pluralism and to the particular reverence in which Borobudur is held across religious boundaries. Borobudur in Its Volcanic Landscape
