
Samarkand: the Crossroads of the Ancient World
"Even more beautiful than I had imagined." Those words, attributed to Alexander the Great upon his arrival at the ancient city of Maracanda in 329 BC, have echoed through the centuries as one of the most succinct tributes ever paid to a city. Alexander was not a man who dealt in easy compliments. He had seen the wonders of the Persian Empire, the opulent palaces of Persepolis, the ancient marvels of Egypt. Yet something about the city on the Zeravshan River — its setting in a fertile, well-watered valley, its legendary markets, its cosmopolitan air — moved even the conqueror of the known world to a kind of reverence.
The city that astonished Alexander is known today as Samarkand, the second-largest city in modern Uzbekistan, and one of the great cultural and architectural treasures of the Islamic world. Over the intervening millennia, it has been sacked by Genghis Khan, raised to imperial glory by Tamerlane, illuminated by one of the greatest astronomer-mathematicians of the medieval period, and recognized in 2001 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the designation "Samarkand — Crossroad of Cultures." Through fire and conquest and resurgence, the city has maintained a continuity of habitation and cultural vitality that makes it one of the most remarkable places on Earth.
Samarkand sits in the Zeravshan Valley in the heart of Central Asia, at a geographic crossroads that made it inevitable that the world's great trade routes would pass through it. The Silk Road — not a single road but a network of overland and maritime routes connecting China with the Mediterranean — passed through Samarkand, and for centuries the city was one of the most important nodes in that network. Silk from China, spices from India, glass from the Mediterranean, horses from the Central Asian steppes, lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, silver from Persia — all of these and more flowed through Samarkand's markets, making the city legendarily wealthy and exposing it to the cultural currents of half the world.
Today, Samarkand's Timurid monuments — the azure-domed madrasas of the Registan, the fluted turquoise dome of the Gur-e-Amir, the street of mausoleums at the Shah-i-Zinda, the immense ruins of the Bibi-Khanym Mosque — constitute one of the most magnificent concentrations of Islamic architecture anywhere on Earth. They are the physical legacy of a moment in the fifteenth century when Samarkand stood at the center of the world, the capital of an empire that stretched from Anatolia to India, the stage on which one of the most extraordinary flowerings of art and science in human history took place.
Ancient Origins: Afrasiab and the Sogdian World
The history of human habitation at Samarkand reaches back at least to the seventh century BC, perhaps earlier. The ancient city occupied a natural acropolis known today as Afrasiab — a plateau rising above the surrounding plain that offered both defensible high ground and proximity to the Zeravshan River. Archaeological excavations at Afrasiab have revealed evidence of continuous settlement stretching back more than two and a half millennia, making Samarkand one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia.
In the ancient world, Samarkand was the capital of the region of Sogdiana, and the Sogdians were among the most remarkable merchant peoples of the ancient and medieval world. The Sogdian language — an Iranian language written in a distinctive script — served as the principal lingua franca of trade along the Silk Road for centuries, from roughly the fourth century to the tenth century of the common era. Sogdian merchants established trading colonies across Central Asia, in China, in India, and throughout the Middle East, creating the first truly international commercial network in history. The Sogdian merchants of Samarkand were the intermediaries through whom silk moved from China's imperial workshops to the courts of Byzantium, through whom Chinese porcelain and lacquerware reached the Persian Empire, through whom lapis lazuli mined in the mountains of Afghanistan reached the artists of the Mediterranean world.
The surviving art of the Sogdians — particularly the remarkable wall paintings discovered at Afrasiab, dated to the seventh century CE, showing the reception of ambassadors from across the known world — gives a vivid sense of the cosmopolitan richness of ancient Samarkand. These paintings, displayed today in the Afrasiab Museum, show ambassadors dressed in the costumes of dozens of different nations arriving at the court of a Sogdian king: envoys from China, from India, from the steppes, from the kingdoms of the west, all converging on this city that sat at the junction of the world's great routes.
The Sogdians were practitioners of Zoroastrianism, the ancient Iranian religion, though they were notably tolerant of other religious traditions. Buddhism had a strong presence in the region, Nestorian Christianity maintained communities, and the ancient Zoroastrian fire temples stood alongside Buddhist stupas and Jewish synagogues. This pluralism was not accidental but practical: merchants who traveled among the peoples of half the world could not afford the luxury of religious intolerance.
The Conquests: from Cyrus to Alexander
Samarkand's wealth made it a prize that successive empires could not resist. The Achaemenid Persian Empire under Cyrus the Great extended its reach into Central Asia, bringing Sogdiana within the Persian imperial system and integrating Samarkand into the administrative and cultural world of the Persians. Under Persian rule, the city continued to develop as a commercial center, its markets expanding as the Achaemenid imperial peace made trade safer across vast distances.
The Persian period ended with Alexander the Great's extraordinary campaign of conquest that swept across Asia in the 330s BC. After defeating the Persian king Darius III and burning Persepolis, Alexander pushed northeast into the regions beyond the traditional boundaries of Persian power. He crossed the Oxus River (the modern Amu Darya) and entered Sogdiana in 329 BC, encountering a city called Maracanda that impressed him as the most beautiful he had seen in his campaign. Samarkand became Alexander's base of operations in the region for several years, from which he launched campaigns against the nomadic peoples of the Eurasian steppes to the north and east.
The Macedonian period was marked not only by military conquest but by cultural encounter. Alexander's forces represented a fusion of Greek and Macedonian culture, and their long sojourn in Central Asia produced a remarkable synthesis of Greek and local traditions that would have lasting consequences. The cultural impact of Alexander's campaigns — the Hellenistic influence that reached as far as India and shaped the Buddhist art of the Gandharan region — was one of the most significant long-range consequences of his time in Central Asia. In Samarkand itself, Alexander established a garrison and a colony of Macedonian veterans, infusing new cultural influences into a city already accustomed to serving as a crossroads of civilizations.
The Macedonian period at Samarkand was relatively brief. After Alexander's death in 323 BC, his empire fragmented among his generals, and Sogdiana passed through the hands of the Seleucid Empire, the Parthians, the Kushans, and the Sassanid Persians in succession. Each left its cultural imprint on the city; the Kushan period in particular (roughly the first to third centuries CE) was notable for the extraordinary synthesis of Greek, Indian, and Iranian artistic traditions that it produced in Central Asia, a synthesis visible in the Buddhist art of the Gandharan region and in the decorative arts of the Silk Road cities.
The Arab Conquest and the Coming of Islam
The arrival of Islam in Central Asia transformed Samarkand more profoundly than any previous conquest. The Arab armies of the Umayyad Caliphate penetrated Central Asia in a series of campaigns in the early eighth century, and in 712 CE the Arab general Qutayba ibn Muslim captured Samarkand. The city that had been a center of Zoroastrian, Buddhist, Hindu, and Nestorian Christian practice for centuries became part of the Islamic world.
The integration of Samarkand into the Islamic cultural sphere was not immediate — the Sogdian population maintained its traditions for some time, and the Islamization of the region was gradual — but it was ultimately transformative. Arabic became the language of religion and learning, Persian (which gradually displaced the Sogdian language) became the language of literature and administration, and the architectural and artistic traditions of the Islamic world began to shape the built environment of the city. The great mosque replaced the Zoroastrian fire temple and the Buddhist stupa as the defining public monument.
One of the most consequential developments associated with the Arab conquest of Samarkand involves the Battle of Talas in 751 CE, fought between the forces of the Abbasid Caliphate and the Chinese Tang Dynasty for control of Central Asia. The Arab and allied forces won a decisive victory, halting Chinese expansion into the region. Among the prisoners taken in the battle, according to a widely circulated account, were Chinese craftsmen who knew the art of paper-making. These craftsmen were brought to Samarkand, where they established the first paper mills in the Islamic world. Samarkand paper — made from linen and cotton fibers rather than the mulberry-bark paper of China — became famous across the Islamic world for its superior quality and durability. The technique spread from Samarkand to Baghdad, and eventually to North Africa and Europe, where the availability of paper would play a crucial role in the intellectual life of the Renaissance.
Historical scholarship has complicated this traditional account: modern researchers have found evidence that paper-making may have been practiced in Central Asia before the Battle of Talas, and the technique of Samarkand paper appears to have developed from local Central Asian traditions. Nevertheless, Samarkand's role as the gateway through which paper-making reached the western Islamic world — and eventually Europe — remains one of the most consequential chapters in the history of human civilization.
The Samanid Dynasty and the Persian Renaissance
After the initial period of Arab rule, Samarkand passed into the hands of the Samanid Dynasty, Persian-speaking Muslim rulers who governed an empire centered on the great cities of Central Asia and Khorasan from 819 to 999 CE. The Samanid period was one of the most brilliant eras in the history of Persian culture. Under Samanid patronage, the Persian language — which had maintained a subdued presence alongside Arabic during the early Islamic centuries — reasserted itself as a great literary language, and the poets, scholars, and scientists who worked in Samarkand and in the Samanid capital of Bukhara produced work that defined the classical Persian literary tradition.
The great physician and philosopher Ibn Sina, known in the West as Avicenna, worked within the intellectual tradition of the Samanid world. His Canon of Medicine remained a standard medical text in Europe until the seventeenth century. The mathematical legacy of the Islamic Golden Age, which preserved and extended the achievements of Greek mathematics and transmitted them to Europe, was built in substantial part by scholars working in this Central Asian cultural environment.
After the Samanids, Samarkand passed through successive rulers: the Karakhanid Turks, the Khwarazmian Empire, and then came the catastrophe that nearly erased the city from history.
The Mongol Destruction and Its Aftermath
In 1220, the armies of Genghis Khan descended on Samarkand. The city was then one of the greatest in the Islamic world — a city of perhaps 200,000 people, a center of commerce, scholarship, and Islamic learning that had been accumulating wealth and culture for over a millennium. The Mongols' assault on Samarkand was total and merciless. The walls were torn down, the aqueduct systems that fed the city's gardens and neighborhoods were destroyed, and the population was subjected to massacre and enslavement. Estimates of those killed vary widely across the historical sources, but the destruction of Samarkand in 1220 was among the greatest urban catastrophes in the history of the medieval world.
The Persian poet Jami, reflecting on cities destroyed by the Mongols, wrote of ruins so complete that one could scarcely tell where the walls had stood. Samarkand suffered precisely this fate: the Mongol destruction was not a raid but an annihilation. The great aqueducts that had sustained the city's irrigated gardens and neighborhoods — the engineering achievements of centuries — were demolished, and without water, the surviving population could not maintain what remained.
The Moroccan traveler Ibn Battuta, who visited Samarkand in 1333 — more than a century after the Mongol sack — still found much of the city in ruins, though he noted the surviving splendor of what remained. The recovery from the Mongol conquest was slow and incomplete until the intervention of the man who would transform the city forever.
Under the later Mongol rulers, the Chagatai Khanate, the city began to recover. Certain buildings were reconstructed, markets reopened, and the trade networks of the Silk Road — which even the Mongols recognized as economically essential — were gradually restored. But Samarkand remained a shadow of its former self until a new conqueror chose it as the center of a new empire.
The Timurid Renaissance: Tamerlane and the Creation of Imperial Samarkand
In 1370, a Turco-Mongol military genius named Timur — known in the Western world as Tamerlane, a corruption of the name Timur-i-Leng, "Timur the Lame" (he walked with a pronounced limp as a result of old wounds) — established his capital at Samarkand. Timur was one of the most formidable conquerors in history: his campaigns swept across Central Asia, Persia, India, the Caucasus, Anatolia, and the Levant, creating an empire that rivaled those of Alexander and Genghis Khan in geographic extent. He sacked Delhi in 1398, defeating and plundering the Sultanate of Delhi, and his campaign sent shock waves through the Islamic world. He defeated the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I at the Battle of Ankara in 1402, temporarily halting Ottoman expansion and capturing the sultan himself. Timur accumulated more plunder than any other ruler of his age.
But what distinguished Timur from most conquerors was his conviction that the fruits of conquest should be used to build, and that the building should be concentrated in his beloved capital. From every city he conquered, Timur brought back the finest artists, architects, craftsmen, scholars, and theologians. From Persia he brought ceramic tile-makers who produced the extraordinary blue, turquoise, and gold faience that now coats the great monuments of Samarkand. From India he brought stone-cutters and elephants to carry stone. From the Arab world he brought calligraphers and scholars. Samarkand under Timur became the most magnificent city in Central Asia — perhaps in all of Asia — a showcase of imperial power and artistic achievement that dazzled every visitor.
The Spanish ambassador Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo visited Samarkand in 1404 on a diplomatic mission from the Kingdom of Castile and left one of the most detailed contemporary accounts of the city at the height of its Timurid glory. Clavijo described a city of extraordinary scale and beauty, its great avenues and gardens and palaces and markets surpassing anything he had encountered in his travels across the known world. He described Timur's great garden outside the city — the Bagh-i-Dilgusha, the Garden of Heart's Delight — as a paradise of trees and flowing water and silk-hung pavilions that seemed to him almost beyond the power of European language to convey.
Timur's building projects in Samarkand were undertaken on a scale that was almost impossible to comprehend. He laid out new gardens outside the city walls, naming them after the great cities he had conquered — the Garden of Baghdad, the Garden of Damascus, the Garden of Delhi — and connecting them with wide avenues designed to astonish visitors with the extent of the imperial vision. He imported enormous quantities of building materials, including marble, rare stones, and exotic woods, from across his empire.
The greatest of Timur's architectural achievements in Samarkand are the monuments that survive today as the most spectacular examples of Timurid architecture: the Registan, the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum, the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, and the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis.
The Registan: the Heart of an Empire
The Registan is the architectural centerpiece of Samarkand and one of the most magnificent public squares in the world. The name means "sandy place" in Persian — a reference to the fact that the square was originally an open commercial area covered with sand, surrounded by bazaars and caravanserais where the merchants of the Silk Road conducted their business. Today it is the name given to the great ensemble of three madrasas (Islamic schools) that frame the square on three sides, creating a composition of such overwhelming beauty and grandeur that it has never ceased to astonish those who see it.
The oldest of the three madrasas is the Ulugh Beg Madrasa, built between 1417 and 1420 by Timur's grandson, the scholar-ruler Ulugh Beg. The madrasa's facade, with its great pishtaq (portal arch) reaching toward the sky and flanked by slender minarets, is covered in intricate tilework of blue, turquoise, white, and gold that creates geometric and calligraphic patterns of breathtaking complexity. The interior courtyards are surrounded by the cells where students lived and studied — at its height, the Ulugh Beg Madrasa housed hundreds of students and was considered one of the foremost institutions of Islamic learning in Central Asia. What distinguished it from other madrasas of the period was its curriculum: Ulugh Beg insisted that astronomy, mathematics, and other rational sciences be taught alongside the traditional Islamic religious subjects, making his madrasa an unusual fusion of religious and scientific education.
Across the square from the Ulugh Beg Madrasa stands the Sher-Dor Madrasa, built between 1619 and 1636 by the Janid ruler Yalangtush Bahadur. Its name means "possessing lions," and refers to the remarkable mosaic panels on its portal that depict a stylized tiger-like creature pursuing a white deer, with a sun-like face rising behind — a remarkable departure from the usual Islamic restraint regarding figural representation in religious architecture. These panels give the Sher-Dor its distinctive character, and the debate over whether they represent a violation of Islamic iconographic norms or a deliberate assertion of Persian and Central Asian artistic traditions has occupied scholars for generations.
The third madrasa, the Tilya-Kori — meaning "gilded" or "decorated with gold" — was built between 1646 and 1660 by the same Yalangtush Bahadur who commissioned the Sher-Dor. The Tilya-Kori served a dual purpose: it was both a madrasa and the principal Friday mosque of Samarkand, compensating for the damage to the great Bibi-Khanym Mosque that had occurred over the preceding centuries. The interior of the Tilya-Kori's mosque hall is its great glory: the ceiling and upper walls are covered in elaborate gold decoration — a gleaming, intricate world of gilded arabesque and geometric patterns that earns the building its name a hundred times over.
Together, the three madrasas of the Registan create a composition whose visual impact is difficult to convey in words. Standing in the center of the square and looking at the three facades simultaneously, one experiences something like what the builders intended: a sense of being surrounded by a vision of paradise made architectural, the entire vocabulary of Islamic decorative art deployed at maximum scale and maximum intensity.
The Gur-E-Amir: the Tomb of the World Conqueror
Among the most recognizable images in the architectural history of Central Asia is the profile of the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum in Samarkand: the great fluted azure dome, ribbed with ridges and covered in an extraordinary deep turquoise-blue tilework that catches the light of the Central Asian sky in ways that seem to change through the course of the day. The name means "Tomb of the Ruler," and this is exactly what it is — the mausoleum of Timur himself, built at the beginning of the fifteenth century and now one of the most visited monuments in Uzbekistan.
The Gur-e-Amir was not originally intended as Timur's tomb. Timur built it in 1403 for his beloved grandson Muhammad Sultan, who had died that year at a young age. Timur himself was engaged in preparation for a campaign against China when he died in 1405 at Otrar, and his body was eventually brought to Samarkand and interred in the mausoleum alongside his grandson. The structure thus became Timur's final resting place almost by accident of circumstance.
The exterior of the Gur-e-Amir is a masterpiece of Timurid architectural design. The great drum supporting the dome rises approximately 33 meters above the ground, covered in bands of Kufic calligraphy rendered in tilework, spelling out religious texts and praises of God. The dome itself, with its distinctive ribbing and its extraordinary turquoise-blue color, became one of the most influential architectural forms in the Islamic world. Its sixty-four ribs correspond, by tradition, to the number of years lived by the Prophet Muhammad. Art historians and architectural scholars consider the dome of the Gur-e-Amir to have directly inspired the architecture of the Taj Mahal in Agra, built by Timur's descendant Shah Jahan two centuries later — the genetic connection between Central Asian Timurid architecture and Mughal architecture in India is one of the most consequential chains of artistic influence in world history.
The interior of the mausoleum contains the cenotaphs — decorative markers above the actual burial crypts — of Timur and members of his family. The most striking is Timur's cenotaph, made of dark green jade, reputedly the largest single piece of jade in the world used for such a purpose, bearing an inscription that proclaims Timur's lineage and warns that whoever disturbs his rest will suffer a terrible fate. This warning achieved a kind of legendary fulfillment in 1941, when Soviet archaeologists opened Timur's tomb and removed his remains for scientific study — the day after the opening, Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa, its invasion of the Soviet Union. The remains were returned to Samarkand in 1942, after which the tide of the war turned at Stalingrad. The story, whatever its factual weight, captures something true about the hold that Timur's memory maintains on the imagination of Central Asia.
The Shah-I-Zinda: a Street of Mausoleums
The Shah-i-Zinda — "the Living King" in Persian — is one of the most atmospheric and moving of all Samarkand's monuments. It is not a single building but a street of mausoleums: a long, narrow lane lined on both sides with the domed tombs of Timurid nobility, saints, and holy figures, climbing a hill toward the legendary tomb of Kusam ibn Abbas, a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad who is said to have brought Islam to the region. The name "Living King" refers to the legend that Kusam ibn Abbas was beheaded for his faith but did not die, continuing to live in a well beneath his tomb — a local legend that made the site one of the most sacred in Central Asia and a destination for Muslim pilgrims for over a thousand years.
The mausoleums that line the street of Shah-i-Zinda were built and rebuilt across several centuries, from the eleventh through the fifteenth, and represent an extraordinary evolution of Timurid and pre-Timurid architectural decoration. Each facade is unique in its tilework and design, and the cumulative effect of walking the lane — past door after door of intricate blue, turquoise, white, and gold geometric and floral patterns — is unlike anything else in Central Asian architecture. The quality of the craftsmanship is extraordinary; some of the tilework at Shah-i-Zinda is among the most technically accomplished ceramic work ever produced in the Islamic world.
The necropolis was closely associated with Timur himself. He buried several female relatives there, including his favorite niece Shadi Mulk Aka, and the tombs of these women are among the most elaborately decorated structures in the complex. The contrast between the external simplicity of the domed structures and the extraordinary richness of the facades and interiors is characteristic of Timurid architecture as a whole — a style that achieves its effects through the overwhelming power of surface decoration rather than through structural grandeur.
The Bibi-Khanym Mosque: Ambition in Stone
The Bibi-Khanym Mosque was, at the time of its construction, the largest mosque in the Islamic world. Timur ordered its construction in 1399, after his return from the devastating campaign in India, and he intended it as the supreme monument of his capital, a building that would announce to the world the power and piety of the Timurid empire. Thousands of workers labored on the mosque for five years; elephants brought from India hauled stone; craftsmen from across the empire worked on its decoration.
The mosque that was completed in 1404 was of extraordinary dimensions: its main portal was over 35 meters high, its main dome soared above the courtyard, and the complex covered an area that dwarfed every mosque that had come before it. Timur was impatient with the pace of construction and reportedly visited the site regularly to urge the workers on — one tradition holds that he threw meat to the workers from horseback to encourage them to eat quickly and return to their labors.
But the Bibi-Khanym was built too quickly and on too ambitious a scale. Almost from the moment of its completion, the structure began to show signs of instability. The architects had pushed the technology of the day beyond its limits, and the great dome — built with insufficient time for the mortar to cure properly — began to settle and crack. Earthquakes over the subsequent centuries accelerated the decay, and by the nineteenth century the Bibi-Khanym was largely a ruin. The gigantic marble Quran stand that stands in the center of the courtyard — a structure so large that it would have held a manuscript the size of a small room — is one of the most powerful remnants of the original ambition.
The ruins of the Bibi-Khanym, even in their incomplete and partially restored state, convey something of the extraordinary scale of Timur's vision. The archway of the main portal, soaring against the blue Central Asian sky, is one of the most dramatic sights in Samarkand, a fragment of megalomania preserved in brick and tile.
Ulugh Beg and the Observatory: Where Science Met the Stars
Among the princes of the Timurid dynasty, the most remarkable in intellectual terms was Ulugh Beg, the grandson of Timur who ruled the Timurid Empire from 1411 until his assassination in 1449. Ulugh Beg was, by any measure, one of the greatest astronomers of the medieval world — a ruler who combined military and administrative responsibilities with a passionate and rigorous devotion to scientific inquiry that produced results accurate enough to astonish modern astronomers.
Ulugh Beg's scientific achievements were centered on the great observatory he built on a hill outside Samarkand between 1428 and 1429. The observatory, known as the Gurkhani Zij after the astronomical tables it was built to produce, was designed around a single enormous instrument: the Fakhri sextant, a device of unprecedented scale and precision. The sextant consisted of a curved channel precisely cut into the bedrock of the hill, oriented exactly along the meridian — the north-south line — and lined with polished marble. The curved track, which followed the arc of the sky as seen from Samarkand, had a radius of approximately 40 meters, making it one of the largest precision scientific instruments ever constructed in the pre-modern world.
The principle of the Fakhri sextant was simple in concept but extraordinary in execution: by observing the point at which sunlight entered through an aperture at the top of the instrument and fell on the calibrated arc at the bottom, Ulugh Beg's astronomers could measure the altitude of the sun with a precision that no smaller instrument could achieve. The greater the radius of the arc, the more precisely each degree of angle could be divided and measured. With a radius of 40 meters, each degree of the arc was divided into increments small enough to measure celestial positions to an accuracy of seconds of arc — a remarkable achievement with no mechanical instruments beyond a finely ruled scale and human observation.
Using the Fakhri sextant and other instruments at the observatory, Ulugh Beg and his team of astronomers — the finest mathematical minds in the Islamic world, recruited from across Central Asia and Persia — produced the Zij-i-Sultani, an astronomical table of extraordinary precision and scope. The Zij-i-Sultani contained the positions of 1,018 stars, measured with an accuracy that, when compared to modern measurements, proves to be within a few seconds of arc. Ulugh Beg calculated the length of the sidereal year — the time it takes the Earth to orbit the Sun relative to the fixed stars — as 365 days, 6 hours, 10 minutes, and 8 seconds. The modern value is 365 days, 6 hours, 9 minutes, and 9.6 seconds — a difference of less than one minute, an error of less than 0.0002 percent.
Ulugh Beg's calculation of the Earth's axial tilt — the inclination of the ecliptic — was equally precise. His star catalog was the most accurate produced between Ptolemy's Almagest in the second century CE and the work of Tycho Brahe in the sixteenth century — a gap of fourteen centuries bridged by the work of a Timurid prince in Samarkand.
The observatory was destroyed shortly after Ulugh Beg's death. In 1449, Ulugh Beg was overthrown and assassinated by his own son Abdul-Latif, who had allied himself with conservative religious figures who objected to the ruler's astronomical work as impious. Within a year of Ulugh Beg's death, the observatory was demolished. The Fakhri sextant was buried — its marble-lined channel filled in and covered over — and the instruments were destroyed. Ulugh Beg's star catalog survived, copied and distributed by his collaborators who fled after his death, and eventually reached Europe where it was published in Oxford in 1665. But the physical observatory was lost for four centuries.
The surviving remains of the Fakhri sextant were rediscovered in 1908 by the Russian archaeologist V. L. Vyatkin, who had spent years searching for the buried remains based on historical descriptions. Excavation revealed the curved channel, still lined with its original marble, descending into the hillside for over 11 meters — the surviving portion of the great arc. The site is now preserved as a museum, and visiting the excavated channel, seeing the actual groove in the marble where Ulugh Beg's astronomers recorded the path of the sun's shadow more than five centuries ago, is one of the most moving scientific historical experiences available anywhere in the world.

The traditional technique of Samarkand paper-making — using water-powered mills to process cotton and linen fibers into sheets of paper using methods refined over centuries — survived in attenuated form through the later Islamic period but largely disappeared during the Russian colonial era and the Soviet period, when industrial paper production made traditional methods economically unviable.
In recent decades, the traditional Samarkand paper has been deliberately revived as part of the broader effort to restore the city's historical craft traditions. Workshops in Samarkand now produce handmade paper using traditional methods that visitors can observe. The revival of Samarkand paper is significant not merely as a tourist attraction but as an effort to reconnect the modern city with one of its most historically important contributions to world civilization.
The Silk Road: Samarkand as Crossroads
To understand Samarkand's role in history, one must understand the Silk Road — or more precisely, the network of routes that modern historians have grouped under that name. The great caravanserais of Samarkand, where the merchants of the Silk Road rested and traded, were among the busiest commercial establishments in the medieval world. The goods that passed through Samarkand's markets shaped the material culture of half the world. Chinese silk reached Byzantine workshops through Samarkand's intermediaries. The papermaking technique that would eventually make possible the European printing revolution and the Renaissance transmission of classical knowledge traveled west from Samarkand. Mathematical and astronomical knowledge accumulated in Samarkand's madrasas and observatories eventually reached European universities through Arabic translations made possible by the commercial networks centered on this city.
The Silk Road declined as a primary trade network after the great disruptions of the Mongol period, and the rise of maritime trade routes around Africa in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries further diminished the importance of the Central Asian overland routes. But the cultural legacy of what the Silk Road had created — the cosmopolitan, multi-ethnic, multi-religious civilization of the Central Asian oasis cities, of which Samarkand was the jewel — endured long after the caravans had thinned.
Russian Conquest and the Colonial Era
After the Uzbek Shaybanid and subsequent Janid dynasties, Samarkand continued to function as a significant city in Central Asia, though its glory was dimmed from the heights of the Timurid period. The city remained an important center of Islamic learning, commerce, and pilgrimage, maintaining its role as a hub in the reduced but still significant trade networks of Central Asia.
The fundamental transformation of Samarkand's political situation came with the Russian conquest of Central Asia in the nineteenth century. The Russian Empire's expansion southward and eastward into Central Asia was driven by a combination of strategic calculations — fear of British expansion into the region from India, desire for access to the cotton-producing capacity of the Central Asian oases — and the straightforward imperial ambition that characterized the great powers of the era. Russian forces occupied Samarkand in 1868, incorporating it into the Russian Empire as part of the Governorate of Turkestan.
The Russian colonial administration established a new European-style city adjacent to the old Islamic city, with wide, planned streets, public gardens, and buildings in the European architectural tradition. This duality — the ancient Islamic city with its great Timurid monuments alongside the planned colonial city — gave Samarkand a character noted by every nineteenth-century traveler. The Russians were also the first to undertake serious archaeological and architectural study of Samarkand's monuments, and the first restoration work on the Timurid buildings was carried out under Russian imperial auspices.
The arrival of Russian rule brought dramatic changes to the region's economy. Cotton cultivation was expanded enormously, supplying the textile mills of Russia, and the construction of the Trans-Caspian Railway reached Samarkand in 1888, fundamentally altering the city's commercial orientation. The railway made Samarkand accessible to European travelers for the first time, and the city began to attract visitors interested in its extraordinary architectural heritage.
The Soviet Period: Preservation and Transformation
After the Russian Revolution, Samarkand became part of the Soviet Union, initially as the capital of the newly created Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic from 1924 to 1930, before the capital was transferred to Tashkent. The Soviet period brought fundamental changes to Samarkand: the collectivization of agriculture, the suppression of traditional Islamic practice, the promotion of the Uzbek language and Uzbek national identity as distinct from the broader Central Asian or Islamic identities that had previously predominated, and the construction of Soviet-era infrastructure including factories, apartment blocks, and public institutions.
Soviet archaeologists undertook extensive work at Afrasiab and at the other archaeological sites around Samarkand, greatly increasing scholarly understanding of the ancient city. The Afrasiab Museum, which houses the extraordinary Sogdian wall paintings from the seventh-century palace, was established during the Soviet period and remains one of the most important museums in Central Asia. Soviet restorers also undertook ambitious programs to stabilize and restore the Timurid monuments — work that was sometimes criticized for excessive interventionism but that prevented the further decay of buildings that were in danger of being lost entirely.
The Soviet restorers faced an enormous challenge. The great monuments had deteriorated badly over the centuries: earthquakes had cracked the great domes, the tilework had fallen in sheets, and the structural integrity of buildings like the Bibi-Khanym was seriously compromised. The restoration projects involved replacing missing tilework with newly manufactured pieces, reinforcing foundations, and in some cases rebuilding sections of walls and arches that had collapsed. The approach was criticized by international conservationists who felt that the replacement of original material — even when that material was completely lost — compromised the historical authenticity of the monuments.
