Location and Geography
Teotihuacan occupies a strategic position in the Valley of Teotihuacan, a sub-valley of the broader Basin of Mexico. The site lies approximately fifty kilometers, or about thirty miles, northeast of the modern Mexican capital, at an elevation of roughly 2,300 meters above sea level. The basin in which the city sits is naturally well-watered by a series of springs and streams that flow from the surrounding mountains, and the valley floor provided fertile agricultural land capable of supporting a substantial population. The nearby presence of the San Juan River, which flows through the ceremonial center of the city, gave Teotihuacan reliable access to fresh water and made large-scale construction projects logistically feasible.
The valley itself is oriented on a roughly north-south axis and is bounded by low hills and mountain ridges that would have made it defensible in an era when territorial conflict was common. To the west and south, the greater Basin of Mexico stretched out in all its lacustrine complexity, a landscape of interconnected lakes and wetlands that supported some of the densest human populations in the pre-Columbian Americas. To the north and east, the terrain opened toward the Gulf Coast lowlands through a series of river valleys that served as natural trade corridors.
The geology of the region gave Teotihuacan another decisive advantage. The surrounding hills and mountains are rich in obsidian, the volcanic glass that was the most prized cutting material in all of Mesoamerica before the arrival of metal tools from Europe. The climate of the valley is semi-arid and temperate, with a pronounced dry season from November through April and a rainy season centered on the summer months. The surrounding hillsides were likely more heavily forested in antiquity than they are today, and the deforestation that attended the city's enormous demand for firewood and for the lime plaster that coated virtually every building surface appears to have been a significant factor in the city's eventual environmental stress.
The Mystery of the Name
The name Teotihuacan was given to the site by the Aztecs, who encountered the ruins many centuries after the original city had been abandoned. In the Nahuatl language of the Aztecs, the name is generally translated as the Place Where the Gods Were Made, or alternatively as the Place Where Men Become Gods or the Birthplace of the Gods. These translations reflect the Aztec belief, which they incorporated into their own cosmological traditions, that Teotihuacan was the sacred location where the gods had gathered at the beginning of the current age to create the sun, the moon, and the cycle of cosmic time that sustained the universe.
We do not know what the original inhabitants called their city. The spoken language of Teotihuacan has been the subject of considerable scholarly debate, and no consensus exists as to its identity. Some researchers have proposed that the dominant language was an early form of Nahuatl, the language family that later produced Aztec. Others have argued for Totonac, the language of a people from the Gulf Coast who may have had a significant presence in the city. Still others favor Otomi, spoken by a highland people with a long history in the Basin of Mexico, or propose that the city was multilingual, home to speakers of several different languages who coexisted within a shared urban culture.
The absence of a decipherable writing system at Teotihuacan is one of the central frustrations of the archaeology of the site. Unlike the Maya, who developed a sophisticated hieroglyphic script capable of recording historical narratives, dynastic genealogies, and ritual texts, the people of Teotihuacan used a system of symbols and glyphs that appear primarily in artistic contexts but have never been fully interpreted. Whether this represents an incomplete writing system, a deliberately restricted use of written communication, or something else entirely remains an open question.
The Chronology of Teotihuacan: from Founding to Fall
The history of Teotihuacan spans roughly seven centuries of continuous occupation at the main site, preceded by an earlier phase of human settlement in the surrounding valley that provides important context for understanding how the great city came into being.
The Earliest Settlement and the Terminal Formative Period (before 100 Bce)
Human beings have occupied the Valley of Teotihuacan for thousands of years. Archaeological surveys of the valley floor and surrounding hillsides have identified evidence of small agricultural villages dating back to at least the first millennium BCE. These early communities were part of the broader cultural horizon of central Mexican village life, cultivating maize, beans, squash, and other crops while maintaining connections to the larger regional exchange networks that linked the Basin of Mexico to the Gulf Coast, Oaxaca, and other parts of Mesoamerica.
The late centuries of the first millennium BCE saw a significant reorganization of settlement patterns across the Valley of Teotihuacan. Multiple small communities that had previously been scattered across the valley floor appear to have consolidated, drawing population toward what would become the main urban center. This nucleation process, which scholars associate with the Terminal Formative period, laid the groundwork for the explosive urban growth that followed.
The Founding Phase (100 Bce to 100 Ce)
The founding of Teotihuacan as a major urban center is conventionally dated to around 100 BCE, though some scholars push the beginning of significant construction back somewhat earlier. The earliest monumental construction at the site appears to have begun during this period, with the first phases of what would later become the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon initiated sometime before the beginning of the Common Era.
Several factors may have contributed to Teotihuacan's rapid rise to prominence during this period. One important possibility is that the catastrophic eruption of the Popocatepetl volcano sometime around 50 BCE displaced large numbers of people from communities in the southeastern Basin of Mexico and forced them to seek new homes in other parts of the region. Teotihuacan, which lay outside the direct impact zone of the eruption, may have absorbed many of these refugees, giving it a sudden population boost that accelerated the process of urban consolidation.
The early city also benefited from its position at the intersection of several important trade routes connecting the Basin of Mexico to the Gulf Coast, to the obsidian-rich highlands to the north and east, and to the rich agricultural regions of the south. Control of these routes, and particularly of the obsidian sources that made the city economically indispensable to communities throughout the region, would remain a cornerstone of Teotihuacan's power for the next several centuries.
The Miccaotli Phase (100 Ce to 150 Ce)
The Miccaotli phase represents the period during which the basic plan of Teotihuacan's monumental center was established. It was during this period that the Avenue of the Dead, the great ceremonial spine of the city, was laid out, and that the Pyramid of the Sun reached something close to its final form. The city's characteristic grid plan, which oriented streets and structures according to a specific astronomical alignment slightly west of true north, was established during this phase and maintained with remarkable consistency throughout the subsequent centuries of construction.
The population of the city grew rapidly during the Miccaotli phase, and the construction of large-scale apartment compounds to house the urban population began in earnest. The physical scale of the city, in terms of both its built area and its population, was increasing dramatically, and by the end of this phase Teotihuacan was already one of the largest cities in the Western Hemisphere.
The Tlamimilolpa and Xolalpan Phases: the Golden Age (150 Ce to 550 Ce)
The period from roughly 150 to 550 CE represents Teotihuacan at the absolute peak of its power, influence, and material achievement. Archaeologists subdivide this long era of dominance into two main phases: the Tlamimilolpa phase (roughly 150 to 300 CE) and the Xolalpan phase (roughly 300 to 550 CE), with the Xolalpan representing the city's political and demographic apogee.
During these centuries, Teotihuacan governed a population that may have been as large as two hundred thousand people, making it the sixth largest city in the world at around 500 CE and by far the largest urban center in the Americas. Its influence extended across Mesoamerica through a combination of trade, military projection, religious prestige, and what appear to have been direct political interventions in the affairs of distant communities. The art, architecture, and religion of the city left their imprint on cultures from the Gulf Coast to the Maya lowlands, from the Valley of Oaxaca to the far reaches of western Mexico.
The Metepec Phase and the Fall (550 Ce to 650 Ce)
The Metepec phase, dating roughly from 550 to 650 CE, covers the final decades of Teotihuacan's life as a functioning city. It ends with the catastrophic burning and abandonment of the city's monumental center, an event that transformed one of the world's great metropolises into a ruin haunted by diminishing numbers of survivors who picked through the debris of a fallen civilization.
Population and Scale: One of the Largest Cities in the Ancient World
Among the many remarkable facts about Teotihuacan, perhaps the most immediately striking is its sheer size. At the height of its power in the fourth and fifth centuries CE, Teotihuacan covered an area of approximately twenty to twenty-two square kilometers and contained a population that modern demographic studies estimate at between one hundred thousand and two hundred thousand people. The most commonly cited figure in scholarly literature is around one hundred twenty-five thousand people, though some estimates run higher.
To appreciate what these numbers mean, it is worth placing them in a global context. At the time when Teotihuacan was reaching its demographic maximum, around 400 to 500 CE, Rome itself, the capital of the greatest empire the Western world had yet produced, had a population of perhaps five hundred thousand to one million people. Teotihuacan, in other words, was not Rome, but it was comparable to many of the other great cities of the ancient world: Alexandria in Egypt, Carthage in North Africa, Constantinople in the Eastern Mediterranean. It dwarfed any other urban center in the Americas by an enormous margin, and it dwarfed most cities in Europe, Africa, and Asia outside of the great population centers of China and India.
The city housed this enormous population in a remarkable built environment. Archaeological surveys conducted systematically during the 1960s and 1970s, under the direction of William T. Sanders and René Millon among others, identified approximately two thousand apartment compound structures distributed across the urban area, along with numerous temples, palaces, marketplaces, and specialized workshop areas. The density of settlement within the city was high, with residential compounds packed closely together along the grid of streets and alleyways that gave the city its characteristic regularity.
Population was drawn to Teotihuacan from a wide variety of ethnic and geographic backgrounds. Isotopic analyses of skeletal remains from the city have confirmed that a significant portion of Teotihuacan's inhabitants were immigrants or the descendants of immigrants from distant parts of Mesoamerica. Distinct neighborhoods of foreign settlers, identified archaeologically by the presence of characteristic pottery styles, burial customs, and other cultural markers, have been located within the city, including what appears to have been a Oaxacan barrio in the western part of the city and a zone inhabited by people from the Gulf Coast in the eastern sector. This ethnic diversity was presumably a product of Teotihuacan's role as a great commercial and religious center that attracted migrants seeking economic opportunity, political protection, and access to the religious prestige of the city's extraordinary sacred landscape.
The Avenue of the Dead: Spine of a Sacred City
The most immediately visible feature of Teotihuacan's urban plan, and the organizing axis around which the entire city was laid out, is the great ceremonial boulevard that modern visitors and archaeologists call the Avenue of the Dead. This extraordinary thoroughfare runs for approximately four kilometers on a roughly north-south axis through the heart of the ceremonial center, connecting the major pyramid complexes and defining the sacred geography of the city.
The name Avenue of the Dead is itself a product of Aztec interpretation. When the Aztecs first encountered the ruins of Teotihuacan, they interpreted the low platform mounds that line both sides of the avenue as the burial places of ancient kings and gods. The Nahuatl name they assigned, Miccaotli, means Road of the Dead or Path of the Dead. Modern archaeology has established that these platforms are not tombs but rather the bases of temples and other structures that once stood atop them, but the evocative name has stuck.
The avenue is approximately forty-five meters wide for much of its length, broad enough to have accommodated large ceremonial processions and public gatherings. Its surface was paved and its sides were flanked by platforms, temples, and palaces arranged in a deliberate sequence that seems to have been designed to create a specific ritual experience for those traversing it. The avenue is not perfectly level, but descends gradually from north to south, with a series of platforms and cross-walls that divide it into discrete sections, each slightly lower than the one before.
At the northern end of the avenue, the Pyramid of the Moon stands as the terminal monument, its great staircase facing south so that worshippers approaching from that direction would have seen the pyramid framed against the sky at the end of the avenue. At a point roughly midway along the avenue's length, the Pyramid of the Sun rises on the eastern side. Further south, the great Ciudadela compound, containing the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, encloses an enormous open plaza on the eastern side of the avenue. At its southern end, the avenue appears to have connected to the great market area of the city.
The orientation of the Avenue of the Dead, which is not aligned with true north but instead points approximately fifteen degrees east of north, has been the subject of extensive astronomical research. This specific angle corresponds to the point on the horizon where the Pleiades star cluster rose in antiquity, and also aligns with the sunset on specific dates in the Mesoamerican ritual calendar. The deliberate choice of this astronomically significant orientation appears throughout the city's design, suggesting that Teotihuacan's planners saw the alignment of the built environment with cosmic forces as a fundamental requirement of proper urban form.
The Pyramid of the Sun: Third Largest in the World
Rising from the eastern flank of the Avenue of the Dead approximately midway along its length, the Pyramid of the Sun is one of the most massive structures ever built in the ancient Americas and the third largest pyramid in the world by volume. Its dimensions are staggering even to modern sensibilities. The base measures approximately two hundred twenty meters on each of its four sides, making it nearly as large in footprint as the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. The pyramid stands approximately sixty-five meters high, roughly equivalent to a twenty-story building. Its total volume, estimated at approximately one million cubic meters of fill material, is composed primarily of earth and rubble faced with stone and coated with lime plaster.
The construction of the Pyramid of the Sun was accomplished without the benefit of metal tools, wheeled vehicles, or draft animals, none of which were available to Mesoamerican civilizations. The labor required was enormous and was almost certainly organized by the state as a massive collective undertaking, perhaps through a system of rotating labor obligations similar to the mit'a system of the later Inca Empire in South America. The pyramid was built in stages, with each successive construction phase enclosing and covering earlier structures.
The pyramid faces west, with its primary staircase ascending the western face toward the Avenue of the Dead and aligned so that observers standing at its summit could watch the sun set twice a year on dates corresponding to the Mesoamerican agricultural calendar. A structure of some kind once stood at the summit, as evidenced by post holes and other features that have been identified at the apex, though the exact nature of this summit temple is unknown.
Beneath the pyramid, in what has been one of the most significant archaeological discoveries at the site, a natural cave runs from approximately beneath the center of the pyramid's western face to a point near its center. This cave, which may have been modified by the ancient inhabitants, appears to have been a sacred space before the pyramid was built above it, and scholars believe that the pyramid was deliberately constructed over the cave because of the cave's ritual significance. In Mesoamerican cosmology, caves were portals to the underworld, the realm of the dead and of supernatural forces, and the construction of the world's largest structure over such a portal would have been a statement of extraordinary theological ambition. The cave was explored in the early 1970s by archaeologist Doris Heyden, who suggested that it may have been associated with the creation myths of the city's inhabitants.
The four sides of the pyramid face the cardinal directions with approximately equal spacing, though the precise alignment is adjusted slightly to match the city's overall grid orientation. The structure was finished with a thick coat of lime plaster, traces of which survive in sheltered areas, and the plaster surface was painted, probably in bright colors, though the specific design of the surface decoration has not survived in sufficient quantity to allow reconstruction.
The Pyramid of the Moon: Gateway to the North
At the northern terminus of the Avenue of the Dead, where the ceremonial boulevard ends against the lower slopes of the Cerro Gordo mountain that rises behind the city, stands the Pyramid of the Moon. Somewhat smaller than the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon rises to approximately forty-three meters above the plaza level and has a base measuring roughly one hundred fifty by one hundred thirty meters. Despite being physically smaller, the Pyramid of the Moon achieves an optical illusion of equal height when viewed from the southern end of the avenue because it was built on slightly higher ground, a deliberate design choice that demonstrates the sophisticated visual planning of Teotihuacan's architects.
The pyramid faces south, its great staircase descending toward a broad ceremonial plaza that separates it from the main axis of the avenue. This plaza, known as the Plaza of the Moon, was flanked by smaller platforms arranged in a symmetrical pattern and appears to have served as a gathering space for large public ceremonies. The overall composition of the pyramid, plaza, and flanking platforms creates an effect of deliberate grandeur that modern visitors still find compelling.
Beginning in 1998, an international team of Mexican and Japanese archaeologists led by Saburo Sugiyama and Ruben Cabrera Castro began a systematic excavation of the Pyramid of the Moon's interior. This project, which has continued for several years with multiple excavation seasons, has revealed a complex sequence of construction phases and an extraordinarily rich collection of ritual deposits buried within the pyramid's core.
The tunnel excavations into the pyramid revealed a sequence of at least seven construction stages, each corresponding to a major rebuilding episode during which the existing pyramid was enclosed within a new, larger shell. Within the fill of these construction stages, the excavators found sacrificial deposits of remarkable variety and richness. These deposits included the remains of human beings who had been sacrificed at the time of each construction phase, along with the skeletons of jaguars, pumas, eagles, wolves, owls, and other animals that appear to have had ritual significance in Teotihuacan's religious system. The human sacrificial victims appear to have been placed in specific positions, some bound and seated, others arranged in patterns that may reflect cosmological symbolism, and were accompanied by offerings of obsidian blades, greenstone figurines, pyrite mirrors, and other high-status objects.
In 2017, the excavation team announced a remarkable additional discovery: a tunnel system extending beneath the pyramid, explored using ground-penetrating radar technology. This tunnel, which appears to run beneath the main axis of the pyramid toward its center, had not been accessible to previous investigations and represents a significant frontier for future research. The discovery of this tunnel prompted immediate comparisons with the much more extensively documented tunnel system beneath the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, and opened new questions about what ritual spaces or deposits might be hidden at its terminus.
The Temple of the Feathered Serpent and the Ciudadela
In the southern portion of Teotihuacan's ceremonial center, opposite the Avenue of the Dead from the Pyramid of the Sun, lies a vast enclosed compound known to modern archaeologists as the Ciudadela, the Citadel. This name is somewhat misleading, as the compound was almost certainly not a fortress but rather the primary administrative and ritual center of the city, the place where the ruling elite resided and where some of the most important religious ceremonies of the city took place.
The Ciudadela is an enormous rectangular enclosure measuring approximately four hundred by four hundred meters, enclosed by a series of platforms and pyramids that stand several meters above the surrounding terrain. The interior of the compound is a great open plaza, large enough to have held a significant fraction of the city's entire population simultaneously, which has led some scholars to suggest that major public ceremonies involving the mass gathering of citizens were conducted here. At the eastern end of the interior plaza stands the most elaborately decorated monument in all of Teotihuacan: the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, also known as the Temple of Quetzalcoatl.
The Temple of the Feathered Serpent is a six-tiered stepped pyramid of modest dimensions compared to the great pyramids on the avenue, but its sculptural decoration is without parallel at the site. The facade of each tier is covered with alternating sculptural motifs of two types: the serpent head with feathered plumes behind it that represents the Feathered Serpent deity, and a different head type with large goggle eyes and a fanged mouth that most researchers identify as either a rain deity or an early version of the deity later known to the Aztecs as Tlaloc. These carved heads, each measuring approximately a meter in diameter, project from the stone surface of the pyramid on undulating serpent bodies that encircle the entire structure. When the pyramid was freshly constructed and covered in its original coat of brightly painted plaster, the effect must have been of extraordinary visual power.
The building of the Temple of the Feathered Serpent was accompanied by one of the largest single acts of human sacrifice documented at any Mesoamerican site. During excavations conducted in the early 1980s and continued in subsequent decades, archaeologists discovered the remains of over two hundred individuals who appear to have been sacrificed and buried within and around the pyramid at the time of its construction. These individuals, many of whom appear to have been warriors or captives from distant communities, were interred in specific patterns that suggest deliberate cosmological symbolism. Some were found with their hands bound behind their backs. Others were accompanied by offerings of obsidian blades, jade ornaments, pyrite discs, and the remains of animals. The sacrifice appears to have been a dedicatory event of state-level significance, possibly marking the coming to power of a new ruler or the beginning of a new political era.
Beneath the Temple of the Feathered Serpent lies one of the most remarkable archaeological tunnels ever discovered in Mesoamerica. This tunnel, which was first identified by geophysical survey in 2003 and subsequently explored in detail by archaeologist Sergio Gomez and his team over the following decade, extends from an entrance shaft on the northern side of the pyramid, runs approximately one hundred meters through solid bedrock, and terminates in a series of chambers at the approximate center of the pyramid's footprint.
The exploration of this tunnel, conducted using remote-controlled robots equipped with cameras and sensors as well as careful manual excavation, revealed a treasure of extraordinary richness. The floor of the tunnel had been covered with a layer of powdered pyrite and hematite, minerals that would have created a glittering, mirror-like surface in torchlight. The walls had been coated with similar reflective materials. Within the chambers at the tunnel's end, the excavators found thousands of objects: jade figurines, obsidian blades, pottery vessels, carved animal bones, seeds, rubber balls, skin fragments from large predatory cats, and enormous quantities of metallic spheres made of clay coated with iron minerals. Sculptures representing human figures were found standing against the walls. The overall effect of the chambers, with their reflective floors and walls and their rich accumulation of precious objects, has been interpreted by Gomez as the deliberate recreation of an underworld space, a cosmic cave representing the mythological realm beneath the earth.
Most dramatically, in the innermost chamber of the tunnel, the excavators discovered pools of liquid mercury. This was extraordinary for several reasons. Mercury, which does not occur naturally in the immediate region of Teotihuacan, must have been brought to the site from a distant source, probably from cinnabar deposits in locations such as Huitzuco in the modern state of Guerrero. The quantity of mercury present in the tunnel is substantial. Mercury was extremely rare in Mesoamerica and has been found at only a handful of other ancient sites in the region, all of them of exceptional importance. At Teotihuacan, the mercury has been interpreted as representing a mythological underground river or sea, a feature of Mesoamerican cosmological geography that marked the boundary between the living world and the realm of the dead. The presence of this feature at the end of the tunnel, combined with the overall design of the underground complex, strongly suggests that the tunnel was conceived as a sacred passage into an artificial underworld, perhaps the location of royal burials or of the most sacred rituals of the city's religious life.
Despite the extraordinary richness of the objects found in the tunnel, no royal tomb has yet been definitively identified within it. Sergio Gomez and his team have suggested that an undisturbed burial chamber may yet lie within the unexplored portions of the underground complex, and the search continues. The discovery of liquid mercury in the innermost chamber remains one of the most tantalizing finds in the history of Mesoamerican archaeology, a clue to the ritual life of a civilization whose inner world we are only beginning to glimpse.
City Planning and the Grid Layout
One of the most immediately striking features of Teotihuacan is the extraordinary regularity and precision of its urban plan. Unlike many ancient cities, which grew organically over time in response to local topography and the accumulated decisions of successive generations of inhabitants, Teotihuacan was laid out according to a rigidly maintained grid plan that oriented virtually every building, street, and plaza according to a single master alignment. The walls of many apartment compounds were decorated with elaborate painted murals, and these murals provide some of our richest evidence for the religious beliefs, ritual practices, and aesthetic sensibilities of Teotihuacan's inhabitants. The murals of Teotihuacan are among the most extensive and best-preserved examples of ancient Mesoamerican painting, and they depict a rich world of deities, ritual specialists, agricultural abundance, warfare, and symbolic animals that reveals the complexity of the city's religious life.
The Talud-Tablero Architectural Style
One of Teotihuacan's most distinctive contributions to the architectural vocabulary of Mesoamerica is a specific style of constructing platform and pyramid facades known as the talud-tablero. This style, which became something of a signature of Teotihuacan's architectural influence across the region, combines two specific elements in a distinctive vertical sequence.

The four main candidate groups that scholars have proposed as possible builders of Teotihuacan are the Totonac, the Nahua, the Otomi, and the Zapotec, though most contemporary researchers favor a multiethnic model that sees the city as the product of a mixed population drawn from various parts of Mesoamerica.

However, like the other single-group hypotheses, the Otomi attribution has difficulty accounting for the full range of evidence from the site.
The Multiethnic Model
The most widely accepted contemporary view of Teotihuacan's population is that the city was multiethnic from an early date and that its remarkable urban culture was the product of diverse populations brought together by the city's extraordinary economic and religious magnetism. The evidence for this multiethnic character is clear and compelling. Isotopic analyses of skeletal remains from the city's cemeteries have demonstrated that a significant proportion of the individuals buried at Teotihuacan spent their childhoods in distant regions before migrating to the city as adults. Distinct ethnic neighborhoods have been identified archaeologically, including areas that show strong connections to Oaxaca, to the Gulf Coast, and possibly to the Maya area.
The language or languages of Teotihuacan remain unknown. Most scholars believe that there was probably a dominant language used in the administration of the city and in its major religious ceremonies, but whether that language was an early form of Nahuatl, a form of Totonac, or something else entirely cannot be determined from the available evidence. The city's symbolic system and its art style show considerable internal consistency over several centuries, suggesting a coherent cultural tradition, but this cultural coherence does not necessarily imply linguistic or ethnic homogeneity.
The mystery of Teotihuacan's identity is not merely an academic question. In this sense, Teotihuacan may be understood as an early example of a genuinely cosmopolitan metropolis, a place where diversity was not an anomaly but a defining characteristic.
Religion and Cosmology at Teotihuacan
The religious life of Teotihuacan pervaded every aspect of the city's existence, from the orientation of its streets and buildings to the decoration of its apartment walls, from the ritual sacrifices that accompanied major construction projects to the smaller-scale religious observances conducted in the household shrines of individual apartment compounds. Reconstructing this religious life from the available archaeological evidence is a challenging task, since Teotihuacan left behind no readable texts that describe its theological beliefs in the explicit way that the Maya inscriptions, the Aztec codices, and the post-conquest Mesoamerican manuscripts do for those traditions. What we know about Teotihuacan religion comes primarily from the artistic and architectural evidence of the site itself.
The Great Goddess
The most prominent deity in Teotihuacan's religious iconography is a figure that scholars have named the Great Goddess of Teotihuacan, sometimes also called the Spider Woman. This deity, a female supernatural figure associated with the earth, with water, with fertility, and with the underworld, appears repeatedly in the murals and sculptures of the city, typically depicted in a frontal pose with arms outstretched, surrounded by streams of water from which flow the symbols of agricultural abundance: ears of maize, seeds, flowers, and drops of water.
The Great Goddess is also associated with the spider, an animal whose capacity to create web-like structures may have connected her with the idea of a great cosmic web linking all living things. She frequently appears with owl feathers or owl imagery, connecting her to the night and to the underworld. Her face is sometimes shown wearing a complex mask with goggle eyes and fangs, motifs that also appear on the heads of the Temple of the Feathered Serpent.
The Feathered Serpent
The second major deity identifiable at Teotihuacan is the Feathered Serpent, the supernatural being whose imagery gives the Temple of the Feathered Serpent its name. Tlaloc the Rain God
A third major figure in Teotihuacan's religious iconography is the rain deity, typically depicted with large round goggle eyes, a wide mouth with prominent fangs or teeth, and headdress elements associated with water and agricultural fertility. This figure appears throughout the murals of the city, particularly in contexts related to rain, water, and the agricultural cycle. By the time of the Aztec civilization, this deity had evolved into the major rain god Tlaloc, one of the most important deities in the Aztec pantheon.
Human Sacrifice and Ritual Dedication
Like virtually all Mesoamerican civilizations, Teotihuacan practiced human sacrifice as a component of its religious system. The scale and nature of sacrificial activity at the site varied considerably depending on the context. The largest and most dramatic sacrificial event documented at the site is the mass sacrifice associated with the construction of the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, which claimed over two hundred lives. Similar if smaller sacrificial deposits have been found associated with the construction of the Pyramid of the Moon, where the excavations of Sugiyama and Cabrera Castro revealed multiple dedicatory burials including sacrificed humans accompanied by bound animals and rich offerings.
Beyond these major construction-related sacrifices, evidence for smaller-scale ritual killing has been found throughout the site, associated with the renewal of plaster floors in apartment compounds, the completion of new construction phases in residential areas, and other events in the life of the city and its inhabitants. The skeletal remains of sacrificed individuals often show evidence of decapitation, dismemberment, or the removal of specific body parts, practices that appear across Mesoamerican religious traditions in contexts associated with fertility, cosmic renewal, and the feeding of supernatural forces.
Art and Murals: the Painted World of Teotihuacan
The murals of Teotihuacan represent one of the great treasures of ancient American art. Painted on the interior and exterior walls of apartment compounds, temples, and other structures throughout the city, these paintings offer a vivid window into the religious beliefs, ritual practices, and aesthetic sensibilities of Teotihuacan's inhabitants. The total extent of preserved painted wall surface at the site, while only a fraction of what once existed, still constitutes one of the largest collections of ancient Mesoamerican painting anywhere.
The murals of Teotihuacan were executed in a distinctive style characterized by flat areas of bold color, precise linear contours, and a strong emphasis on symbolic content over naturalistic representation. Human figures are typically shown in profile, with flat, simplified forms and large, expressive eyes. Animals, plants, and supernatural beings are rendered with equal stylization, their forms reduced to patterns of line and color that convey meaning through established conventions of symbolism rather than through lifelike portrayal.
The most important murals at the site come from several major apartment compounds. The murals of Tetitla, one of the best-preserved compound complexes, include images of the Great Goddess surrounded by streams of water containing symbols of abundance, jaguar-warrior figures painted in procession, and elaborate geometric designs. The compound of Atetelco contains spectacular images of warriors in ritual procession, their bodies decorated with the symbolic markings of military or priestly office. The compound of La Ventilla has yielded murals depicting what appear to be ballgame imagery and processions of elaborately costumed figures.
The use of color in Teotihuacan murals was not arbitrary. Red, which was produced from iron oxide minerals and was the most commonly used color at the site, appears to have had associations with blood, with life, and with the earth. Blue-green pigments, often made from copper-based minerals or plant-derived dyes, were associated with water, fertility, and the supernatural. Yellow, which appears less frequently, may have been associated with solar imagery. Black, made from carbon-based materials, was used for outlines and for specific symbolic elements.
The Mural of Tlalocan
Among the most celebrated of Teotihuacan's murals is a large painting from the compound of Tepantitla known as the Mural of Tlalocan, after the Aztec name for the paradise of the rain god. This mural, which has been interpreted in various ways by different scholars, depicts a large central figure, likely the Great Goddess or a closely related deity, standing before a great mountain from which flow streams of water teeming with human figures, fish, and plant life. The small human figures in the streams appear to be playing, swimming, and celebrating, and the overall image has been interpreted as a vision of paradise: the blessed realm of those who died by water-related causes, who were believed in later Mesoamerican traditions to be specially favored by the rain deity.
Teotihuacan's Economy and Trade Networks
The economic life of Teotihuacan was extraordinarily complex and sophisticated, befitting a city of its enormous size and political importance. The city served simultaneously as an agricultural center, a manufacturing hub, a commercial marketplace, and the node of far-reaching trade networks that extended across hundreds and even thousands of kilometers.
Agriculture and Food Production
The agricultural foundation of Teotihuacan's economy was the cultivation of the standard Mesoamerican crop complex: maize, beans, squash, chili peppers, and a variety of other plants. The city's large population required an enormous and reliable food supply, and the surrounding valley floor was intensively cultivated using a variety of techniques including irrigation agriculture drawing on the springs and streams of the valley, chinampa cultivation in the wetland areas, and terrace agriculture on the surrounding hillsides.
Beyond the immediate valley, Teotihuacan drew agricultural products from a much larger hinterland. The city's political reach appears to have extended across a substantial portion of the Basin of Mexico and possibly beyond, and tribute or tax revenues in food commodities were presumably extracted from subordinate communities throughout this region. The market system of the city also brought agricultural products from distant regions, including cacao from the tropical lowlands, cotton from the warm valleys of the south, and a variety of specialized foodstuffs unavailable in the highland environment.
Obsidian: the Foundation of Economic Power
The most economically significant product of Teotihuacan's manufacturing economy was obsidian, the volcanic glass that was the most important cutting material in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The city controlled access to two of the most productive obsidian sources in central Mexico: the Otumba deposits in the nearby Valley of Teotihuacan, and the more distant but extraordinarily productive deposits at Pachuca in the modern state of Hidalgo. Pachuca obsidian, which has a distinctive green tint produced by trace elements in the volcanic glass, was the highest-quality and most widely traded obsidian in all of Mesoamerica, and the ability to control its production and distribution was a major source of economic leverage for Teotihuacan.
The city organized obsidian production at an industrial scale. At some workshops, the debris from thousands of individual knapping sessions has accumulated in deposits meters deep. The products of these workshops, including standardized prismatic blades, projectile points, scrapers, and knives, were traded throughout Mesoamerica. Teotihuacan obsidian has been found at sites across Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador, evidence of a trading network of continental scale.
Pottery and Ceramics
Teotihuacan's potters produced a distinctive ceramic tradition that, like the city's obsidian, was traded across a wide area. The most characteristic Teotihuacan ceramic form is the cylindrical tripod vessel, a cylindrical pot with three slab feet and a flat base that was decorated with painted or molded imagery. These vessels, which have been found at sites throughout Mesoamerica, served as prestige goods that conveyed Teotihuacan's cultural influence along with their purely economic value.
Another important ceramic product was a type of thin-walled orange pottery, often called Thin Orange ware by archaeologists, which was produced in specialized workshops in Teotihuacan and traded widely across the region. The distinctive orange color and thin walls of these vessels made them immediately recognizable, and their presence at a site is often taken as an indicator of direct or indirect contact with Teotihuacan.
Exotic Materials from Distant Sources
Among the most remarkable evidence of Teotihuacan's far-reaching trade connections is the presence at the site of materials that could only have come from very distant places. Jade and greenstone, which were among the most highly valued materials in all of Mesoamerica, were brought to Teotihuacan from sources in Guatemala, Oaxaca, and other distant regions. Shells from the Pacific and Gulf coasts served as ritual and decorative materials. Feathers of tropical birds, particularly the long iridescent plumes of the quetzal, were brought from the cloud forests of Guatemala and Chiapas hundreds of kilometers away.
Perhaps most remarkable of all is the presence at Teotihuacan of large quantities of mica, a mineral that occurs in thin, flexible, highly reflective sheets. The mica found at Teotihuacan, which was used as a decorative and possibly ritual material, does not come from any source in Mexico. Geological analysis has determined that much of the mica at Teotihuacan originated in Brazil, more than four thousand kilometers to the southeast. How this mica made its way from Brazil to central Mexico, across what must have been an extraordinarily long chain of exchanges, is unknown, but its presence at the site is a reminder of the extraordinary scope of the trading and exchange networks that connected the ancient Americas.
Teotihuacan's Influence Across Mesoamerica
The reach of Teotihuacan's power and influence during the fourth and fifth centuries CE extended far beyond the Basin of Mexico into virtually every corner of Mesoamerica. This influence was expressed in multiple overlapping ways: through the spread of the city's material culture in the form of pottery, obsidian tools, and other traded goods; through the adoption of Teotihuacan architectural styles and urban planning principles by distant elites; through the diffusion of religious iconography and ritual practices; and in some cases through what appear to have been direct military interventions or political manipulations by Teotihuacan agents in the internal affairs of distant communities.
Teotihuacan and the Valley of Oaxaca
In the Valley of Oaxaca, some three hundred kilometers southeast of Teotihuacan, the Zapotec civilization and its capital at Monte Alban maintained close but complex relations with the northern metropolis. The presence of what appears to have been a distinct barrio of Oaxacan residents within Teotihuacan itself suggests ongoing contact between the two urban centers, and Teotihuacan influence is visible in the architecture and ceramic traditions of Monte Alban during the relevant period. Teotihuacan and the Gulf Coast
The Gulf Coast of Mexico, particularly the region that would later be associated with the Totonac and other Gulf Coast cultures, maintained close economic and cultural ties with Teotihuacan. At the site of Kaminaljuyu, located in what is now Guatemala City, the evidence for direct Teotihuacan presence is particularly strong. Entire architectural complexes at Kaminaljuyu were built in the talud-tablero style characteristic of Teotihuacan, and burial assemblages from the site contain Teotihuacan-style pottery and other goods in abundance.
