Geography and Location

The Nazca Lines are located in the Pampa de San José, a broad, windswept plateau that forms part of the larger coastal desert zone of southern Peru. This plateau lies within the Ica Region, roughly 400 kilometers south of Lima and about 30 kilometers south of the town of Nazca itself. The plateau sits at an elevation of roughly 600 meters above sea level and covers an expanse of approximately 450 square kilometers, though the geoglyphs extend beyond this into adjacent valleys and hillsides.

The region belongs to one of the driest places on Earth. Annual rainfall seldom exceeds a few millimeters, and the combination of constant, moderate winds that blow at low altitude and a stable atmospheric layer that forms above the desert helps to preserve the lines. The winds sweep loose particles from the surface and keep the geoglyphs from filling in, while the layer of air just above the ground acts as a natural buffer against the kind of erosion that would destroy similar markings in more temperate climates. The climate here is harsh for life but extraordinarily hospitable to preservation.

The plateau's surface is covered with a layer of reddish-brown iron oxide-coated pebbles and stones that give it a dark, rusty hue. Beneath this surface crust lies a layer of yellowish-white ground, rich in gypsum and other pale minerals. The contrast between the reddish surface and the pale subsurface provides the visual foundation on which the Nazca Lines become visible. The lines themselves are formed by removing or displacing the surface stones, exposing the lighter ground beneath, creating images of pale lines against a darker background.

The Nazca plateau is bounded to the north by the Ingenio River valley and to the south by the Nazca River valley. The region includes not only the flat pampa where most of the large geometric figures are found but also the adjacent hillsides and river banks where many of the zoomorphic figures — the animals and plants — are concentrated. The entire landscape is embedded within the hyperarid coastal strip of Peru, where the Andes create a profound rain shadow that produces one of the driest environments in South America.

Discovery by Western Science

Although local Peruvian communities had always known of the lines — and oral traditions, road construction accounts, and early colonial records make passing mention of unusual markings in the desert — the Nazca Lines entered the consciousness of modern archaeology through a series of encounters beginning in the 1920s.

Toribio Mejía Xesspe, a Peruvian archaeologist and student of the pioneering Andean scholar Julio C. Tello, is credited with being the first person from the modern scientific world to document the lines. Mejía Xesspe first encountered the geoglyphs in 1927 while hiking through the region. Seen from the desert floor, the markings appear simply as low earthen ridges or shallow cleared paths, difficult to interpret without perspective. Mejía Xesspe recorded his observations and concluded that the lines might represent a form of sacred pathway associated with ritual processions, a hypothesis he later presented formally at an archaeological congress in Lima in 1939. His interpretation was cautious and grounded in the cultural context of Andean religion, and while it has been modified by subsequent research, it has never been entirely set aside.

The next major figure in the scientific discovery of the lines was Paul Kosok, an American historian and scholar at Long Island University who specialized in ancient irrigation systems. Kosok arrived in Peru in 1939 to investigate the sophisticated water management infrastructure of pre-Columbian cultures. His work in the Nazca region led him to the plateau, and on the evening of the winter solstice in June 1941, Kosok observed that the setting sun aligned almost perfectly with the end of one of the long straight lines. This observation struck him with tremendous force. He described the lines as potentially the largest astronomy book in the world, proposing that the geoglyphs might function as a massive astronomical calendar system, with individual lines, rays, and spirals marking solar, lunar, and stellar events throughout the year. Kosok published his findings and brought the Nazca Lines to wider international attention.

Maria Reiche was the figure who transformed the study of the Nazca Lines from a subject of passing scholarly curiosity into a lifelong scientific and conservationist mission. Born in Dresden, Germany, Reiche trained as a mathematician and came to Peru in 1932 to work as a governess and tutor. After meeting Kosok, she became captivated by the lines and devoted the remaining decades of her life — from the late 1940s until her death in 1998 — to their study, documentation, and protection. Reiche mapped hundreds of the geoglyphs with extraordinary precision, using simple measuring instruments, ropes, and her mathematical training to record their dimensions and orientations. She identified more than 800 straight lines, 300 geometric figures, and 70 animal, plant, and human designs in the Nazca area. She developed and expanded the astronomical hypothesis, arguing that individual figures corresponded to constellations or marked specific rising and setting points of stars and planets on the horizon. She also worked tirelessly to prevent damage to the lines, physically sweeping the surface to preserve their clarity and lobbying the Peruvian government to establish protective measures. Reiche lived and worked on the plateau for decades, and her devotion made her the public face of Nazca to generations of visitors and researchers worldwide. She is remembered with profound affection in Peru, where she is known by the nickname La Dama de la Pampa — the Lady of the Pampa.

Physical Description of the Geoglyphs

The Nazca Lines encompass an immense variety of designs, from sweeping geometric figures of colossal scale to delicate zoomorphic images barely discernible to a casual observer on the ground.

The largest category consists of the straight lines themselves. Hundreds of these run across the desert, some for just a few hundred meters and others extending for several kilometers with remarkable straightness. Their width varies from less than a meter to several meters across, and they maintain their direction with extraordinary consistency, undeviated by minor topographic variations in the ground surface. In a region without modern surveying equipment, this degree of precision is striking, suggesting sophisticated planning and execution.

Closely related to the straight lines are the geometric figures: trapezoids, rectangles, and triangles that cover vast areas of the plateau. Some of these geometric shapes are enormous — certain trapezoids span hundreds of meters in width and extend for a kilometer or more in length. Their surfaces are cleared of stones, creating broad, flat, open areas of pale earth. These cleared areas have led some researchers to speculate about their use as gathering spaces, ritual arenas, or landing areas, though physical evidence for any specific use remains elusive.

The spirals and zigzag patterns add further complexity to the landscape. Some spiral figures wind inward for hundreds of meters before terminating at a central point. Others seem to function as decorative elaborations connecting the ends of straight-line figures.

Among the most celebrated of the geoglyphs are the zoomorphic figures — the animals and plants. The Hummingbird is perhaps the most widely reproduced, measuring approximately 93 to 96 meters in length. Its elongated beak, curved body, and spread tail feathers are rendered with flowing, continuous lines that suggest intimate familiarity with the bird's form. The Spider is smaller, measuring roughly 46 meters across, and its eight legs are portrayed with uncanny naturalism. One of the spider's legs terminates in an extended filament that researchers have noted resembles the reproductive organ of a rare genus of Amazonian spider. The Monkey is one of the largest animal figures, measuring approximately 110 meters in length, and is notable for its extraordinary, tightly wound spiral tail. The Condor, an Andean bird of great cultural and spiritual significance throughout the Andes, stretches approximately 130 to 135 meters across. The Whale, the Tree, the Pelican, the Parrot, the Lizard, and the Dog are among the many other zoomorphic and plant figures identified across the plateau. The figure sometimes called the Astronaut or the Owl Man — carved into a hillside rather than on the flat plain — depicts a human-like figure with large, round eyes and is one of the more enigmatic of all the designs. The Hands figure shows two human hands, one with four fingers and one with five.

All the zoomorphic figures are composed of a single continuous line that traces the entire outline without crossing itself, a technique that has no parallel in other ancient art traditions of comparable scale. This single-line technique means the figures can theoretically be traced from beginning to end without lifting a pen from paper — a characteristic that has fascinated mathematicians and art historians alike.

How the Nazca Lines Were Made

The creation of the Nazca Lines required no special technology or engineering capabilities that would have been unavailable to a pre-Columbian Andean society. Experimental archaeologists have demonstrated that the basic technique could have been accomplished with tools common to the Nazca culture: wooden stakes, rope or cordage made from cotton or plant fibers, and human labor.

The fundamental method involved the systematic removal of the reddish-brown surface stones and their careful piling along the edges of the designs. The removed stones were stacked into low borders that outline the cleared areas, forming the visible edges of the lines and geometric figures. The pale yellowish-white subsurface layer, exposed by this removal, provides the visual contrast that makes the designs visible from altitude. The borders of piled stones are still visible today along the edges of many figures.

For the straight lines, researchers have proposed that a simple system of wooden stakes and cord could allow a small team to project a line across the uneven terrain. A sighting stake is planted at one end, and additional stakes are aligned by eye along the intended direction as the line is extended forward. The remarkable straightness of many of the Nazca Lines is achievable through careful sighting technique, and experiments by researchers including Joe Nickell have confirmed this. Work teams could have extended lines for hundreds of meters with acceptable precision using only this method.

For the zoomorphic figures, the problem of scaling a small design to enormous size has been addressed through several proposed techniques. One approach suggests that preliminary sketches were made on a small scale, then enlarged using a grid system — a technique known and used by other ancient cultures for enlarging designs in art and architecture. Another hypothesis suggests that simple mathematical relationships and surveying techniques could have guided the work. The fact that the figures are drawn in a single continuous line is consistent with a method of marking out the full perimeter before excavating it, then following the marked path systematically.

The work of creating the lines would have required organized communal labor, likely under the direction of specialists who understood the plan for each figure. Estimates of the labor involved vary, but some researchers have calculated that the smaller animal figures could have been completed by a team of several dozen workers in a matter of days, while the larger geometric figures might have required weeks or months of sustained effort.

The Nazca People

The people who created the lines — the Nazca culture — flourished in the valleys and desert margins of the south coast of Peru for roughly a millennium, from approximately 100 BCE to 800 CE, though some scholarly chronologies extend the beginning of the culture somewhat earlier. The Nazca occupied a challenging environment in which agriculture was possible only through careful management of water from rivers flowing from the Andes, supplemented by elaborate systems of subterranean aqueducts known as puquios. These underground water channels, some of which are still in use today, channeled water from aquifers beneath the desert floor to agricultural fields, allowing the Nazca to cultivate cotton, maize, beans, squash, and other crops in an otherwise hostile landscape.

Nazca society was organized around a series of regional communities rather than a single centralized state. Settlement evidence indicates that the Nazca Valley and adjacent valleys supported substantial populations concentrated in villages and towns, of which Cahuachi — located on the south bank of the Nazca River — was the most important ceremonial center. Cahuachi was dominated by a series of large platform mounds and plazas that served as the focus of pilgrimage, ritual, and possibly political assembly. The site appears to have been primarily ceremonial rather than residential, drawing people from a wide area for feasts, ceremonies, and communal activities, including possibly the creation and use of the geoglyphs.

Nazca ceramics are among the finest produced by any pre-Columbian culture. They are characterized by brilliant polychrome decoration, with vivid pigments applied to thin-walled vessels of great technical refinement. The designs on Nazca pottery include many of the same creatures depicted in the geoglyphs — hummingbirds, spiders, killer whales, supernatural beings — and also include the so-called Mythical Spotted Cat or the Mythical Killer Whale, supernatural hybrid creatures that were clearly central to Nazca religious iconography. The parallels between ceramic imagery and geoglyph imagery provide important clues about the cultural and religious significance of the geoglyphs.

Nazca textiles were equally sophisticated, featuring complex geometric and representational designs woven with extraordinary skill from cotton and camelid fibers. Objects recovered from Nazca burials include elaborate offerings of ceramics, textiles, shell, and other prestige materials, indicating a society with marked social differentiation and rich ceremonial life.

The Nazca also practiced ritual head removal and the curation of trophy heads — human crania that were modified with a drilled hole and loop of cord that allowed them to be carried or displayed. Trophy heads are depicted on ceramics and appear in burials and offerings, suggesting a complex ceremonial or martial tradition involving the taking and veneration of human heads. This practice is linked by some researchers to fertility and agricultural cycles — the belief that the energy of a defeated or sacrificed individual could be channeled into the earth to ensure good harvests.

Theories of Purpose

No question about the Nazca Lines has generated more sustained debate than the question of why they were made. Researchers from many disciplines have proposed a wide variety of explanations, ranging from the rigorously scientific to the deeply speculative, and the scholarly consensus, while better defined than it once was, still acknowledges significant uncertainty.

The astronomical calendar hypothesis, associated most prominently with Paul Kosok and Maria Reiche, proposes that the lines were oriented to mark the rising and setting positions of celestial bodies throughout the year and across longer astronomical cycles. Reiche spent decades mapping the orientations of individual lines and comparing them with astronomically significant directions — solstices, equinoxes, the risings and settings of stars important in the Andean ceremonial calendar. She argued that certain lines pointed to the position of the Pleiades at sunrise at a particular period, and that other lines tracked the paths of the sun and moon across the year. This hypothesis was compelling and widely influential, but rigorous statistical analysis conducted by Anthony Aveni and others in the 1980s and 1990s found that while some lines show astronomically significant orientations, the patterns are not consistent enough across the entire site to indicate that astronomy was the primary organizing principle behind the geoglyphs. The astronomical alignments that exist may be incidental rather than intentional, or they may represent one element of a more complex system of meaning.

The water and irrigation hypothesis, developed significantly by scholars including David Johnson and further elaborated by others, proposes that many of the straight lines track the paths of underground water sources or point toward springs, wells, or river confluences important to the Nazca people. The south coast of Peru is profoundly water-scarce, and water management was a central preoccupation of Nazca culture, as demonstrated by the remarkable system of puquios — subterranean aqueducts that still function in the Nazca Valley. According to this hypothesis, the lines served as a kind of map or oracle system for locating and honoring water sources in a landscape where water meant life. Some lines have been found to terminate at or near water sources, and the trapezoidal cleared areas may have been sites for communal gatherings related to water ceremonies. This hypothesis has attracted significant scholarly interest, though critics note that not all lines can be explained by water associations.

The ritual pathway hypothesis — related to the original intuition of Toribio Mejía Xesspe — proposes that the lines were used as pathways for ceremonial processions or ritual walking. Anthropologist Johan Reinhard and others have emphasized the importance of sacred landscape and pilgrimage in Andean cultures. In this view, the lines were not meant to be seen from above but to be walked upon, connecting sacred places, honored deities, and ritual sites in a pattern meaningful to those who participated. Evidence for ritual walking or dancing on the lines has been suggested by physical wear patterns in certain areas, and the association of the lines with the ceremonial center of Cahuachi supports the idea that they were embedded in a broader ritual landscape centered on collective ceremony. Ethnoarchaeological research among contemporary Andean communities, where ritual walking to mountain peaks and along specified sacred routes is still practiced, provides comparative context for this interpretation.

The offerings and deities hypothesis proposes that the geoglyphs were created as offerings to supernatural beings or mountain deities — the apus — who were associated with rain, fertility, and cosmic order. In Andean religion, large-scale constructions of all kinds, including massive offerings of textiles, ceramics, and other valuables, have been understood as gifts to supernatural patrons. The creation of the enormous geoglyphs may have represented the ultimate offering — the transformation of the landscape itself into a sacred gift. The association of many of the zoomorphic figures with creatures that appear in Nazca religious iconography on ceramics and textiles supports this reading. The spider, for instance, is linked in some interpretations with rain and fertility, while the hummingbird is associated with the mountains and the water cycle.

The alien and ancient astronaut theories that claim the Nazca Lines were created by or for extraterrestrial visitors are the most widely circulated popular explanations outside the scientific community. These theories were given their most influential expression by Erich von Däniken in his 1968 book Chariots of the Gods, in which he argued that the lines served as landing strips for extraterrestrial aircraft and that the zoomorphic figures were drawn to be seen from space by beings who visited ancient Earth. These claims have been decisively rejected by archaeologists and other scholars for reasons that are straightforward and compelling. The Nazca Lines are not runways — the plateau surface is soft earth, not a hard landing surface, and the borders of piled stones along the line edges would prevent any aircraft from using them safely. The figures are not uniquely visible only from space — they are clearly visible and interpretable from the hilltops adjacent to the plateau, and from modest altitudes achievable by kites or observation towers. The techniques required to create the lines require no advanced technology whatsoever, only careful planning, communal labor, and the use of simple tools — all of which the Nazca culture demonstrably possessed. Furthermore, the designs on the geoglyphs are consistent with the imagery appearing on Nazca ceramics and textiles of the same period, indicating they are cultural products of local human creativity, not mysterious external impositions. The alien hypothesis persists in popular culture largely because it is dramatic and because the lines are genuinely astonishing — but their astonishment is a testament to human capability, not to otherworldly intervention.

The most sophisticated current scholarship on the Nazca Lines tends toward a plural interpretation: that the lines, created over many generations by many groups and communities, did not have a single unified purpose. Different figures, created at different times by different communities for different immediate reasons, may have served multiple overlapping functions — ritual, astronomical, hydraulic, social, aesthetic. The overall landscape of geoglyphs is best understood as a sacred geography, a vast ritual arena in which the Nazca people articulated their relationships with water, the cosmos, their ancestors, and their deities over the course of centuries.

Unesco World Heritage Designation

The Nazca Lines were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 under the designation Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Palpa, reflecting the fact that the geoglyph tradition extended across both the Nasca and Palpa provinces of the Ica Region. UNESCO recognized the site as meeting the criteria for outstanding universal value in terms of representing a masterpiece of human creative genius and bearing exceptional testimony to a living cultural tradition.

The inscription statement emphasized the remarkable scale and technical achievement of the geoglyphs, their extraordinary state of preservation across more than two thousand years, and the enduring mystery of their purpose that continues to generate significant scholarly inquiry. UNESCO also noted the exceptional fragility of the site and the importance of measures to prevent damage from development, tourism, and environmental change.

The Palpa component of the designation acknowledges that geoglyphs are found not only on the famous Nazca plateau but also in the Palpa area to the north, where additional zoomorphic figures and geometric designs, some associated with the Paracas culture that predated the Nazca, have been identified and documented. In recent years, aerial photography and drone surveys have revealed additional geoglyphs in the region that were previously unrecorded, suggesting that the full extent of the geoglyph tradition in southern Peru is still being discovered.

Modern Threats and Conservation Challenges

The Nazca Lines face a variety of threats in the contemporary era, some of which have already caused irreversible damage to specific geoglyphs.

The most dramatic single incident in recent memory took place on January 27, 2018, when a truck driver named Jainer Jesús Flores Vigo drove a heavy commercial truck directly across the plateau surface in a restricted area, apparently in an attempt to bypass a toll. The truck left deep tire tracks across an area approximately 100 meters long, damaging portions of three previously intact straight-line geoglyphs. The damage was described by Peruvian authorities as irreversible. The driver was detained and subsequently faced legal proceedings. The incident provoked significant outrage in Peru and internationally, drawing attention to the inadequacy of physical barriers and surveillance at the site. Peruvian authorities announced plans to increase drone monitoring and improve physical access restrictions in the aftermath.

An earlier and highly publicized incident of damage occurred in December 2014, when Greenpeace activists entered the protected area adjacent to the Hummingbird geoglyph to set up large fabric letters reading TIME FOR CHANGE! THE FUTURE IS RENEWABLE ENERGY as a publicity action timed to coincide with the United Nations Climate Conference being held in Lima. The activists left visible footprints in the sensitive surface of the plateau, causing damage that the Peruvian Ministry of Culture described as permanent. The incident drew furious condemnation from the Peruvian government and from archaeologists worldwide and became a significant controversy for Greenpeace. The organization issued an apology acknowledging the damage but the legal and diplomatic fallout continued for years. The action became a cautionary example of well-intentioned environmental advocacy causing archaeological harm.

Illegal mining operations have historically posed a threat to areas adjacent to the plateau. Small-scale illegal miners have at various times encroached on the buffer zones around the designated area, and their activity poses risks both through direct ground disturbance and through the introduction of vehicle traffic into sensitive areas.

Squatter settlements and informal agricultural expansion along the margins of the plateau represent an ongoing concern. Population pressure in the Nazca and Palpa valleys has led to incremental encroachment on protected buffer zones over the decades since designation, and the management of these pressures requires constant vigilance by Peruvian cultural authorities in cooperation with local communities.

Tourism itself, while essential to generating public support for conservation and providing economic benefits to local communities, also creates pressure on the site. Foot traffic in areas adjacent to observation towers, informal access to the plateau by visitors who leave the designated areas, and the construction of tourism infrastructure in sensitive zones have all contributed to incremental degradation. The Mirador, a metal observation tower constructed beside the Pan-American Highway from which several geoglyphs can be viewed at ground level, has become a focal point for mass tourism activity.

The impact of climate change introduces additional uncertainty about the long-term preservation of the lines. While the hyperarid climate of the Nazca plateau has been the primary factor in their survival, changes in precipitation patterns associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation and longer-term climate shifts could potentially alter the conditions that have preserved the geoglyphs for more than two thousand years. Exceptional rainfall events — rare but not unknown in the region — can damage the cleared geoglyph surfaces by depositing sediment or causing erosion of the stone borders.

Ongoing Research and New Discoveries

Scientific investigation of the Nazca Lines has accelerated dramatically in recent decades as new technologies have been applied to the plateau. Aerial photography has long been essential to the study of the geoglyphs, but the advent of satellite imagery, unmanned aerial vehicles, and digital terrain modeling has transformed the pace and scope of discovery.

A team of Japanese researchers from Yamagata University, led by Masato Sakai, has been conducting systematic survey work at Nasca and Palpa since the early 2000s. Using aerial surveys, GPS mapping, and more recently machine learning algorithms applied to drone-captured imagery, the team has identified hundreds of previously unknown geoglyphs. By 2019, the team announced the discovery of more than 140 new geoglyphs through a combination of drone survey and artificial intelligence analysis. The AI system, developed in collaboration with IBM Japan, was trained to identify the characteristic signatures of geoglyphs in aerial imagery and successfully found figures that had been missed by earlier surveys conducted visually by human analysts. These newly discovered figures tend to be smaller than the famous zoomorphic designs and include geometric forms and additional animal figures.

The Peruvian Ministry of Culture, in partnership with international research institutions, has been developing a comprehensive digital inventory of all known geoglyphs in the Nasca and Palpa area, including high-resolution GPS coordinates, dimensional data, and photographic documentation. This inventory serves as the baseline for monitoring changes in the condition of individual figures over time, providing an early warning system for deterioration or damage.

Ground-penetrating radar and other remote sensing technologies have been applied to investigate what lies beneath the surface of the plateau. These surveys have revealed evidence of buried features including what appear to be additional cleared areas and structural elements not visible at the surface. Subsurface investigations at Cahuachi continue to reveal the complexity of that ceremonial center's construction history, with multiple phases of building activity extending over several centuries. The relationship between Cahuachi and the geoglyphs remains a central question in Nazca research, and ongoing excavations are gradually clarifying the chronology and character of that relationship.

Archaeobotanical and isotopic analysis of plant and food remains from Nazca sites is providing new information about the agricultural base and diet of the Nazca people, as well as the nature of ceremonial feasting at sites including Cahuachi. These analyses are helping to situate the geoglyphs within a broader picture of Nazca social and economic life. Similarly, isotopic analysis of human skeletal remains is beginning to reveal patterns of migration and population movement within the Nazca world, shedding light on the degree to which the plateau attracted people from distant valleys for ritual activity.

The question of the relationship between the geoglyphs and the water management infrastructure of the Nazca — specifically the puquios — continues to attract research attention. Studies using satellite imagery and fieldwork have mapped the full extent of the puquio system and identified previously unknown features, and comparative analysis of the spatial relationships between puquio inlets, the lines, and the geoglyphs is ongoing. Some scholars see strong spatial correlations that support the water hypothesis; others argue the correlations are insufficient to be definitive.

New analyses of the soil chemistry within cleared geoglyph areas, compared with undisturbed areas of the plateau, are being undertaken to test the hypothesis that the cleared areas may have been sites of ritual burning or deposition of organic materials. Preliminary results from some areas suggest elevated concentrations of certain plant residues consistent with ritual burning, though the interpretation of these results requires careful contextual analysis.

The Cultural Legacy of the Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines occupy a remarkable position in human cultural history. They are among the largest-scale works of art ever created by human hands, and they were produced by a culture that did not have the benefit of metal tools, wheeled vehicles, or written records — only the accumulated knowledge of a sophisticated tradition passed from generation to generation. The fact that they have survived in recognizable form for more than two thousand years, preserved by one of the most inhospitable climates on Earth, seems almost miraculous.

For the Peruvian nation, the lines are a source of profound cultural pride and a major focus of the country's heritage identity and international tourism industry.
