The Mughal Empire and the World of Shah Jahan
To understand the Taj Mahal, one must first understand the civilization that produced it. The Mughal Empire, which dominated most of the Indian subcontinent from the early sixteenth century to the mid-eighteenth, was one of the most powerful and culturally sophisticated states in the world during its peak. Founded by Babur, a prince of Timurid descent who combined the military traditions of Central Asia with the cultural refinement of the Persian world, the empire reached its greatest extent and most glorious cultural expression under the emperor Akbar (r. 1556–1605) and his successors Jahangir and Shah Jahan.
The Mughals were great builders. Akbar constructed the magnificent fortified city of Fatehpur Sikri. Jahangir oversaw important building projects and was himself an extraordinary patron of miniature painting. It was Shah Jahan, however, who raised Mughal architecture to its absolute pinnacle. His reign produced not only the Taj Mahal but also the Red Fort in Delhi, the Jama Masjid mosque, and extensive additions to the Agra Fort — a program of building that, for sheer ambition and quality, ranks among the greatest in the history of architecture.
Shah Jahan was born in 1592, the son of the emperor Jahangir. His given name was Khurram — "joyful" in Persian — and he showed from an early age the combination of military capability, political shrewdness, and aesthetic sensitivity that would characterize his reign. He met the woman who would become his great love around 1607, when he was fifteen years old and she was approximately fourteen. Her name was Arjumand Banu Begum, the niece of Jahangir's powerful empress Nur Jahan. The attraction between them was immediate and profound. According to the court historian Abdul Hamid Lahori, who chronicled the reign of Shah Jahan in the Padshahnama, Prince Khurram encountered Arjumand in the Meena Bazaar — a royal market — and immediately recognized in her a woman unlike any other.
They were formally betrothed at once, though custom and the complexity of royal arrangements meant that the actual marriage did not take place until 1612. In the intervening years, Shah Jahan married other wives as required by political circumstance, but Arjumand Banu Begum was the one he loved. After their marriage, he gave her the title Mumtaz Mahal — "Chosen One of the Palace" — and she became his inseparable companion. She traveled with him on military campaigns, advised him on political matters, and was by virtually all contemporary accounts the center of his emotional life. In nineteen years of marriage, she bore him fourteen children.
The great love story of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan was not merely a private attachment; it was central to how the imperial court understood itself and how it wished to be understood by history. The Padshahnama — the official chronicle of Shah Jahan's reign — describes their relationship in terms that were meant to evoke the divine: a love so perfect that it transcended ordinary human attachment. However much of this was the flattery of court historians, there is no reason to doubt that the attachment was genuine and deep. The course of Shah Jahan's life after Mumtaz's death is testimony enough.
The Death of Mumtaz Mahal and the Birth of a Monument
On June 17, 1631, at the town of Burhanpur in the Deccan, where Shah Jahan had been conducting military operations, Mumtaz Mahal died in childbirth, giving birth to their fourteenth child, a daughter named Gauhar Ara. She was approximately thirty-seven years old. The labor had been long and difficult, lasting more than thirty hours, and after the birth she suffered a severe hemorrhage from which she did not recover. Shah Jahan, who had been at her bedside throughout, was reportedly devastated in a way that expressed itself physically as well as emotionally: the court chronicles describe him as refusing food for days, withdrawing from public affairs, and emerging from his period of seclusion with his dark hair reportedly turned white from grief.
The court chronicler Lahori wrote that the emperor's grief was so extreme that his retainers feared for his life. The sound of music was banned from the court for two years. The emperor wore only white — the color of mourning in Mughal culture — and refrained from wearing jewelry or elaborate dress. The normal ceremonies and celebrations of the imperial court were suspended. "The Sun of his majesty," wrote one courtier, "was shrouded in the darkness of bereavement."
But grief, in a man of Shah Jahan's nature and resources, eventually found expression not in despair but in creation. Even before Mumtaz's body was transported from Burhanpur to Agra — initially she was buried temporarily at Burhanpur, then her body was moved to Agra in December 1631 — Shah Jahan had conceived the idea of building for her the most magnificent mausoleum that the world had ever seen. He would construct a monument that would preserve her memory against the erosion of time, a building so beautiful that it would compel the world to remember her and the love he bore her for as long as stone could stand.
The construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632 and took approximately twenty-two years to complete in its final form, with the main mausoleum largely finished by 1643 and the entire complex, including the surrounding gardens, the mosque, the guest house, and the great gateway, completed around 1653. The cost of construction, estimated by contemporary accounts in the tens of millions of rupees, represented a significant fraction of the imperial treasury. The logistics alone were staggering: the white Makrana marble had to be quarried at Makrana in Rajasthan, approximately 400 kilometers from Agra, and transported to the site by a train of elephants and ox-carts. Precious and semi-precious stones had to be obtained from sources across Asia: lapis lazuli from the mines of Afghanistan, jade from China, carnelian from Arabia, turquoise from Tibet, coral from the Arabian Sea, crystal from China, onyx from Persia, and many others. The red sandstone used for the gateway and flanking structures came from the quarries of Fatehpur Sikri. Every material was selected with conscious intent, and every selection carried symbolic weight.
The Architecture: Genius in Marble
The Taj Mahal is not a single building but a complex of buildings and landscape elements organized according to principles of axial symmetry and symbolic meaning that reward careful study. The total complex covers approximately 17 hectares, or 42 acres, and is oriented on a north-south axis with the mausoleum at the northern end, elevated above the river on a broad marble terrace.
The approach to the complex is through the walled forecourt known as the jilaukhana, which contains subsidiary tombs and is reached from the town of Agra through the bazaar street of Taj Ganj. From the jilaukhana, the visitor enters the main garden complex through the Great Gate — the Darwaza-i-Rauza, meaning "Gateway of the Tomb" — a magnificent red sandstone arch whose interior and exterior surfaces are covered entirely with calligraphic inscriptions in black marble, selecting verses from the Quran chosen with specific reference to themes of judgment, paradise, and eternal life. The arch is designed to perfectly frame the mausoleum as you pass through it, revealing the white marble building as a vision at the end of the long reflecting pool.
The garden itself, called the Charbagh — "Four Gardens" — is one of the supreme examples of the Mughal paradise garden tradition. The name refers to the Quranic description of paradise as a garden divided into four quadrants, and the garden of the Taj Mahal embodies this symbolism literally: it is divided into four equal sections by two water channels that intersect at a raised central basin of white marble. Each quadrant is further subdivided by subsidiary paths into sixteen sunken parterres planted with flowers and cypresses. At each corner of the plinth stands one of the four minarets — tall, slender towers with balconied lanterns at their tops — each rising approximately 40 meters (131 feet) from the plinth level. The central dome — the most famous element of the building — rises from an octagonal drum and reaches a height of approximately 73 meters (240 feet) above the garden level. It is a double dome: the inner dome defines the interior space, while the outer dome, separated from it by an empty space, creates the building's exterior silhouette. The building's relationship to the sky is also mediated by another optical effect that the architects engineered deliberately: the perception that the central dome and the building's overall form appear slightly larger and closer than they actually are when viewed from the central axis of the garden. As you walk toward the building, it appears to recede rather than grow; when you turn and walk away, it appears to follow you. These effects result from the careful proportional relationship between the mausoleum's actual dimensions, its elevation on the plinth, the width of the reflecting pool, and the length of the garden — a relationship calculated so that the building's visual weight never overwhelms the viewer but always remains in a relationship of dynamic tension with the surrounding space.
The Materials: Marble, Precious Stones, and Light
The building material of the Taj Mahal is Makrana marble — a high-quality, fine-grained white marble quarried at Makrana in the Rajasthan desert. The patterns these stones create are predominantly floral and vegetal: stylized flowers, vines, and leaves that cover the lower portions of the mausoleum's exterior walls, the interior walls, the cenotaphs, and many other surfaces throughout the complex. The abstracted flowers of the Taj Mahal have been studied by botanists, who have identified in them representations of identifiable species — narcissus, iris, tulip, lily, lotus, carnation — rendered with a fidelity to natural form that suggests the craftsmen worked from actual specimens. Each individual flower is a miniature masterpiece, sometimes no larger than a coin, assembled from dozens of precisely cut and fitted stone fragments.
Flanking the mausoleum on either side are two subsidiary buildings of nearly identical design. To the west stands the mosque — the Masjid — oriented toward Mecca as required by Islamic practice, built of red sandstone with white marble domes. To the east stands the Mihman Khana, a guest house built to mirror the mosque exactly, which exists primarily to maintain the perfect symmetry of the composition. The calligraphy that adorns the Taj Mahal is itself a major artistic achievement of the first rank. The verses from the Quran inscribed in black marble across the surfaces of the gateway and the mausoleum were selected and designed by the calligrapher Abd ul-Haq Shirazi, who was given the honorary title Amanat Khan — "Trusted Noble" — by Shah Jahan in recognition of his extraordinary contribution. Amanat Khan's name is the only calligrapher's signature anywhere on the Taj Mahal complex, inscribed at the base of the arch of the main gateway. The calligraphy is executed in the nasta'liq style of Persian script, and it is rendered in a size that varies according to its height above the ground: the letters become progressively larger as they rise higher on the surface, so that from ground level the entire inscription appears uniform in size. The Interior: the Tombs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal
The interior of the mausoleum is organized around a central octagonal chamber beneath the dome. The walls of this chamber are covered with elaborate marble inlay in floral and geometric patterns, lit primarily by natural light filtering through elaborate screens of pierced marble in the windows — screens of such delicacy that they are effectively translucent, filtering the light into a gentle, diffuse quality that creates an atmosphere of serene, meditative calm. The proportions of the interior are remarkable: the dome's height is approximately equal to the width of the chamber below it, creating a sense of perfect equilibrium that visitors often find profoundly peaceful.
At the center of the chamber stand the two cenotaphs — the false tombs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. These are not the actual burial places but commemorative markers whose purpose is to indicate the presence of the tombs below. The cenotaph of Mumtaz is in the exact geometric center of the chamber, aligned precisely on the building's north-south axis. The cenotaph of Shah Jahan, added after his death in 1666 beside that of his wife, is larger than hers and positioned to her left, facing her. This is the only element in an otherwise perfectly symmetrical building that departs from exact symmetry — Shah Jahan's cenotaph was not part of the original design, since the building was conceived for Mumtaz alone. When Shah Jahan was buried beside his wife, the disruption of the symmetry was accepted as the price of honoring their union in death as in life.
The actual tombs are in the lower chamber, directly below the cenotaphs, accessible by a staircase that is not open to the public. They rest at approximately the level of the garden and are substantially simpler in decoration than the cenotaphs above them. The placement of the actual bodies in the earth, below the level of the garden, while the decorative cenotaphs occupy the central chamber above, reflects Islamic practice: the Quran discourages the elaborate marking of graves, but the Mughal desire to honor the dead through magnificent architectural forms found its resolution in the convention of placing the actual interment below ground while the commemorative chamber above was elaborately embellished.
The two cenotaphs are enclosed within a magnificent screen of white marble, intricately pierced in geometric patterns that allow light to filter through while creating a sense of sacred enclosure. The original screen was reportedly made of gold; it was replaced with the current marble screen after a portion of the original was stolen. Each cenotaph is covered with floral inlay work of extraordinary quality, the pietra dura patterns of narcissus, lilies, and poppies covering every surface of the white marble sarcophagi. The cenotaph of Mumtaz bears an inscription identifying her as "the dweller in paradise," while that of Shah Jahan, added later, has a more elaborate inscription identifying him as "the second lord of the two sacred places" — a reference to his authority over the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.
The Story of Shah Jahan's Imprisonment and Death
The story of the Taj Mahal's creation has a melancholy coda that has become as famous as the monument itself. In 1657, Shah Jahan fell gravely ill, and a war of succession broke out among his sons. The third son, Aurangzeb, proved to be the most militarily capable and politically ruthless. By 1658, Aurangzeb had defeated his brothers and seized control of the empire. The Agra Fort stands on the bank of the Yamuna River approximately two kilometers upstream from the Taj Mahal. From one of its towers — the Musamman Burj, a magnificent octagonal marble tower overlooking the river — Shah Jahan could see the Taj Mahal in the distance. The image of the aging emperor, imprisoned by his own son, spending his final years gazing at the monument he had built for the woman he loved, has become one of the most haunting narratives in the history of architecture. Whether this image is strictly accurate — whether Shah Jahan did indeed spend hours gazing at the Taj from his window — is not entirely certain; the story appears in accounts written after his death and may contain elements of legend. But it has the quality of truth in the sense that it expresses something real about the man and his monument: his love for Mumtaz, his refusal to let time erode what he had built for her memory, his loyalty to the past in the face of a hostile present.
Shah Jahan spent eight years as his son's prisoner, from 1658 until his death in January 1666. During his captivity he was cared for by his devoted daughter Jahanara, who chose to remain with her father in confinement rather than enjoy her freedom at the Mughal court. When Shah Jahan died, Aurangzeb permitted him to be buried in the Taj Mahal, beside Mumtaz — a concession that acknowledged, even in the midst of their estrangement, the bond that linked father to monument and monument to love.
The Taj Mahal and the Environment: the Battle Against Pollution
For all its apparent permanence — its marble walls, its foundations sunk deep into the earth, its massive physical presence — the Taj Mahal is not invulnerable. In the twentieth century, as industrial development transformed the region around Agra, a new and insidious threat emerged: pollution.
The Mathura Oil Refinery, established approximately 40 kilometers from Agra, together with the industrial and vehicular emissions of the surrounding region, created a cloud of polluted air that enveloped the monument. Acid rain — rain whose acidity is elevated by dissolved sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from industrial and vehicular emissions — began to attack the surface of the Makrana marble. The term "marble cancer" was used by some conservationists to describe the progressive deterioration of stone surfaces.
The Indian government, responding to public concern and legal pressure, established the Taj Trapezium Zone — a restricted area covering 10,400 square kilometers around the monument within which industrial activity is regulated to protect the Taj Mahal's environment. The number of visitors to the Taj Mahal — which had reached approximately 7 to 8 million annually in the years before restrictions were tightened — has itself become a concern, as the moisture and carbon dioxide exhaled by millions of visitors accumulates within the enclosed spaces of the mausoleum and can contribute to deterioration of the surfaces. The Archaeological Survey of India, which is responsible for the monument's conservation, has introduced visitor restrictions, including limits on the time visitors may spend inside the mausoleum chamber and periodic closures for cleaning and restoration work.
The challenge of preserving the Taj Mahal for future generations is ultimately a challenge of balancing the monument's status as a global icon — which requires it to be accessible, visible, and part of the living experience of millions of people — with its survival as a physical object, which requires protecting it from the very popularity that makes it so important. It is a challenge that has no perfect solution, only a perpetual negotiation between competing goods. The Taj Mahal was built to last forever, to defeat time through the magnificence of its materials and the perfection of its construction. The question of whether it will actually last forever depends not only on the quality of what Shah Jahan built but on the choices that subsequent generations make about how to live and manufacture and govern in its vicinity.

It has become a pilgrimage site not only for tourists but for artists, architects, poets, and philosophers who come seeking not merely to see but to understand — to learn from what Shah Jahan's builders achieved something about what art and architecture at their highest are capable of.
The poet Rabindranath Tagore described the Taj Mahal as "a teardrop on the cheek of time" — an image that captures something essential about the monument's emotional register. The river behind the mausoleum catches the evening light and glitters. The minarets cast long shadows across the marble plinth. The building acquires a weight and solidity at evening that it seems to lack in the morning light, as if the day's heat has compressed it.
Moonlight is the experience that visitors who can arrange it speak of with most reverence.
