Technological Advances and the Age of Exploration

In the second half of the fifteenth century, the Iberian kingdoms began doing something European states had not been able to do before: they sailed armed ships out of sight of land for months at a time, kept track of where they were, and came back. The technologies that made it possible — the magnetic compass, the lateen rig, the astrolabe and quadrant, the portolan chart, the ocean-going caravel, the shipboard cannon — were assembled from many sources. The motives that drove the voyages were a tangled mix of commerce, religion, and state power. Topic 1.6 holds the technologies and the motives in the same frame.

Key Concepts

Topic 1.6 holds two related stories together: the technological side (LO G, KC-1.3.II) and the motive side (LO H, KC-1.3.I.A through C). Neither side makes sense without the other. The technologies were assembled and adopted because European states and merchants had specific reasons to want them; the motives could not be acted on without the technical means. The CED's framing reflects this: the topic carries two thematic codes (TSI and INT) and two learning objectives, and verifier-aligned lesson materials must cover both.

Begin with the technologies. KC-1.3.II groups them under three headings. Navigation: the magnetic compass (adopted from Chinese precedent in the late thirteenth century), the sternpost rudder (which gave large vessels precise steering), the lateen-rigged sail (which let ships sail closer to the wind than square rigs alone could manage), and the celestial-altitude instruments (the quadrant and the simpler shipboard astrolabe) used to determine latitude from observations of the sun or the polar star. Cartography: the late medieval portolan charts that recorded coastlines and harbor entries from accumulating sailor experience, then the Mercator projection of 1569 that allowed straight-line plotting of compass bearings on a flat map. Military technology: guns and gunpowder, especially the shipboard cannon mounted on the new ocean-going Iberian caravels and naos. None of these technologies was European in origin; the European achievement was their integration into a system that could project armed force across long oceanic distances.

The vessel that put them all together was the caravel, a Portuguese ocean-going ship developed across the fifteenth century. The caravel combined the lateen rig (for windward sailing) with the broader hull and shallower draft needed for African and Atlantic coasting; in its lateen-and-square hybrid form (the caravela redonda) it became the workhorse of fifteenth century Portuguese exploration. Larger nao (Spanish) and carrack (Mediterranean) ships followed, with multiple decks of cannon and the cargo capacity needed for transatlantic and Indian Ocean voyages. By 1500 European shipbuilders could produce vessels capable of multi-month deep-water voyages with armed crews; by 1600 those vessels were the standard tools of European overseas commerce and warfare.

The motives that put the technology to work are described in three CED key concepts. KC-1.3.I.A identifies the commercial motive: European states sought direct access to gold, spices, and other luxury goods to enhance personal wealth and state power. The driving fact behind the Portuguese voyages was the prices of pepper, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and other Asian spices in fifteenth century European markets. Pepper alone was worth its weight in silver in northern European cities. The established overland and Mediterranean routes from Asia to Europe ran through Ottoman and Mamluk territory and through the Venetian merchant houses of the eastern Mediterranean; each intermediary added cost. Any European power that could reach the spice islands directly stood to capture a large share of the difference. The same logic applied, with somewhat lower stakes, to West African gold.

KC-1.3.I.B identifies the political-economic motive: the rise of mercantilism gave the state a new role in promoting commercial development and acquiring overseas colonies. Mercantilism is the early modern European doctrine that a state's wealth and power depend on accumulating bullion (gold and silver), maintaining a positive balance of trade, fostering domestic manufactures, and acquiring colonies as both sources of raw materials and captive markets for finished goods. The doctrine emerged across the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and was articulated most systematically in the writings of seventeenth century French and English officials such as Jean-Baptiste Colbert, controller-general of finances under Louis XIV, and Thomas Mun, governor of the English East India Company. Mercantilism connects Topic 1.5 (the New Monarchies' state-building project) to Topic 1.7 (the European overseas trade rivalries) and Topic 1.8 (colonial expansion). It is the political-economic logic that ties the consolidated European state to overseas empire.

KC-1.3.I.C identifies the religious motive. Christianity drove exploration as governments and ecclesiastical authorities sought to spread the faith, and at times provided cover for the subjugation of indigenous peoples. The Portuguese voyages of the fifteenth century were framed as a continuation of the Reconquista, with papal bulls (notably Romanus Pontifex of 1455) authorizing the Portuguese crown to claim non-Christian territories. Spain's Catholic missionaries — first Franciscan and Dominican friars, then the Jesuits after their founding in 1540 — accompanied the conquistadors into the Americas, the Philippines, Japan, and China. The Christianizing project was a real motivation for the actors involved, and it was also instrumentally useful: the legal and theological doctrines that justified Spanish conquest of the Americas (Sublimis Deus, 1537; Requerimiento, 1513) were built on the premise that bringing indigenous peoples to Christianity was a legitimate ground for European political authority. The CED's framing — religious motives as both genuine stimulus and as justification for subjugation — keeps both threads in view.

The voyages themselves followed a recognizable sequence. Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal (1394-1460), brother of King John I, organized a sustained program of voyages along the West African coast from his court at Sagres beginning in the 1410s; the Portuguese reached the Senegal River in the 1440s, the Gulf of Guinea by the 1470s, and the Cape of Good Hope under Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. Vasco da Gama reached the Indian port of Calicut in May 1498, opening the maritime spice route that broke the Venetian and Mamluk monopoly. Christopher Columbus, sailing for Castile under the Capitulations of Santa Fe of 1492, made transatlantic landfall on what is now San Salvador in October 1492, mistakenly identifying the islands as the East Indies. Pedro Alvares Cabral's 1500 Brazilian landfall opened Portuguese territorial claims in South America. Ferdinand Magellan's expedition of 1519-1522, completed by Juan Sebastian Elcano after Magellan's death in the Philippines, became the first to circumnavigate the globe. By 1525 the world map looked very different than it had a century earlier.

Topic 1.6 is therefore the engineering and motivational engine of the rest of Unit 1 and of much of Units 6 and 7. The technical innovations made the voyages possible; the commercial, political-economic, and religious motives drove states and individuals to pursue them; and the resulting overseas empires set the conditions for the colonial system, the Columbian Exchange, the slave trade, and the early modern European commercial revolution. Students who have absorbed both KC-1.3.II (the technologies) and KC-1.3.I.A through C (the motives) have the framework they need for Topics 1.7 through 1.10 and for the long arc that runs through to the eighteenth century.

Wherefore the chronicler shall first speak of the lord Infant Don Henry, who was the cause of the said discoveries... Five reasons in chief moved this lord Infant. First, the desire to know what lands existed beyond the Canaries and a cape called Bojador... Second, that if there should chance to be in those lands some population of Christians, or some harbors into which it would be possible to sail without peril, many kinds of merchandise might be brought to this realm... The fifth reason was the great desire he had to make increase in the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ and to bring to him all the souls that should be saved."

Gomes Eanes de Zurara was the official chronicler of the Portuguese crown and a member of Henry the Navigator's household. The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea, completed around 1453, is the earliest narrative account of the Portuguese West African voyages of the 1430s and 1440s. The excerpt above lists five motives Henry himself is said to have had; the five condense neatly to commercial, geographic, and religious goals (KC-1.3.I.A, KC-1.3.I.C). The text is also the earliest contemporary description of the West African slave trade — the second part of the chronicle is a detailed and unsettling account of the 1444 Lagos slave market — which makes it the historical pivot between the voyages of Topic 1.6 and the slave trade of Topic 1.9. Zurara was a paid royal official; students reading the source should attend to its rhetorical purpose (justifying and celebrating Portuguese expansion) as well as its evidentiary content.

Christopher Columbus, Journal of the First Voyage, 11 October 1492

"At two o'clock in the morning the land was discovered, at two leagues distance... At dawn we saw naked people... I, in order that they might develop a great liking for us, because I knew that they were a people to be delivered and converted to our holy faith better by love than by force, gave to some of them red caps and to some of them glass beads which they hung on their necks... Afterwards they came swimming to the boats of the ships in which we were, and brought us parrots and cotton thread in skeins, and javelins and many other things... They are the color of Canary Islanders, neither black nor white, and some of them paint themselves white, and some black, and others with whatever they find."

Columbus kept a daily logbook of his first voyage; the original is lost, but a partial transcription by Bartolomé de las Casas in the 1530s preserves substantial portions. The 11 October 1492 entry records the first European landfall in the Americas (Columbus called the island San Salvador; modern scholarship places it somewhere in the Bahamas). Three things are visible in a single short passage. The first is the commercial frame: Columbus immediately notes the cotton, parrots, and other tradeable items the islanders brought. The second is the religious frame: the indigenous people are 'a people to be delivered and converted to our holy faith.' The third is the assumption of European jurisdictional authority: Columbus took possession of the islands for Castile through a formal ceremony recorded earlier in the same entry. KC-1.3.I.A and KC-1.3.I.C are both present in the logbook.

Thomas Mun, England's Treasure by Forraign Trade, 1664

"The ordinary means therefore to encrease our wealth and treasure is by Forraign Trade, wherein wee must ever observe this rule; to sell more to strangers yearly than wee consume of theirs in value. For suppose that when this Kingdom is plentifully served with the Cloth, Lead, Tin, Iron, Fish and other native commodities, we doe yearly export the overplus to forraign Countries to the value of twenty two hundred thousand pounds; by which means we are enabled beyond the Seas to buy and bring in forraign wares for our use and Consumptions, to the value of twenty hundred thousand pounds; By this order duly kept in our trading, we may rest assured that the Kingdom shall be enriched yearly two hundred thousand pounds, which must be brought to us in so much Treasure."

Thomas Mun (1571-1641) was a director of the English East India Company. England's Treasure by Forraign Trade, written in the 1620s and published posthumously in 1664, became the period's most widely-read English statement of mercantilist doctrine. The excerpt above states the central principle: a positive balance of foreign trade (selling more abroad than buying from abroad) is the means by which a nation accumulates bullion and grows wealthier and more powerful. KC-1.3.I.B captures this thread: the rise of mercantilism gave the state a new role in promoting commercial development and acquiring overseas colonies, because the colonies provided both raw materials for domestic manufactures and captive markets for finished goods. Mun's text postdates the Iberian voyages by more than a century, but it articulates the political-economic doctrine that the New Monarchies and their successors were practicing across the entire period.
