Darwinism, Social Darwinism

Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species (1859) presented the systematic theory of biological evolution by natural selection. The Descent of Man (1871) extended the theory to human evolution. Within twenty years, the theory had transformed European biology and provoked extensive theological debate. Herbert Spencer's "survival of the fittest" applied biological-evolutionary categories to human society as Social Darwinism — the principal pseudo-scientific framework for late-nineteenth-century imperial-justification ideology and racialist nationalism.

Key Concepts

Topic 7.4 traces the principal mid-Victorian scientific transformation and its late-century social-political application. The biological theory itself — presented in Darwin's On the Origin of Species (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871) — remains the foundation of modern biological science. The Social Darwinist application — developed by Herbert Spencer, popularized across the late nineteenth century, and applied to imperial-justification ideology and racialist nationalism — is a separate development that has not survived scientific scrutiny. KC-3.6.II.B captures both: Darwin's biological theory and the racialist theories that became known as Social Darwinism.

Darwin's biological theory. Charles Darwin (1809-1882) developed the theory of evolution by natural selection during and after his five-year voyage on HMS Beagle (1831-1836). The voyage took the young Darwin around South America, across the Pacific via the Galapagos Islands, and home through New Zealand, Australia, the Cape of Good Hope, and the South Atlantic. Darwin observed extensive biological variation and the relationship of species to their environments. The Galapagos finches in particular — thirteen closely related species adapted to different food sources on different islands — suggested that species could change over time through the cumulative effect of environmental pressures.

Darwin worked out the theory through the late 1830s and 1840s but delayed publication for two decades, anticipating the controversy publication would produce. The 1858 receipt of an essay from Alfred Russel Wallace independently proposing natural selection prompted Darwin to publish. Wallace's essay and a summary of Darwin's earlier work were jointly read at the Linnean Society of London on 1 July 1858; Darwin's full treatment, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, was published 24 November 1859 (the entire first print run of 1,250 copies sold out on the day of publication).

The theory has three principal components. First, variation: individuals within a species differ in heritable traits. Second, differential reproductive success: individuals possessing variations advantageous in their environments are more likely to survive and reproduce, transmitting their traits to subsequent generations. Third, cumulative change: across many generations, the cumulative effect of differential reproductive success produces species change — "descent with modification" in Darwin's phrase. The theory required no appeal to divine design or to inherent purpose in nature; biological forms could be explained by the cumulative action of natural selection over geological time. Darwin's theory was inevitably weakened by his lack of a correct theory of heredity (Gregor Mendel's 1866 paper on plant genetics was unknown to Darwin); the early-twentieth-century "modern synthesis" combined Darwinian natural selection with Mendelian genetics to produce the integrated theory that remains the foundation of modern biological science.

Religious and intellectual reception. The Origin of Species provoked extensive theological and scientific controversy. The 1860 British Association meeting at the Oxford University Museum produced the famous (probably embellished) exchange between Bishop Samuel Wilberforce of Oxford and the biologist Thomas Henry Huxley. Wilberforce reportedly asked Huxley whether he descended from apes through his grandfather's or his grandmother's side; Huxley replied that he would rather have an ape for an ancestor than a bishop who used his rhetorical gifts to obscure the truth. Huxley's vigorous public defense of Darwin earned him the nickname "Darwin's bulldog" and helped to establish Darwinian natural selection as the dominant view in mid-Victorian British scientific opinion.

Religious responses ranged widely. Darwin had been raised in the moderate Anglican intellectual tradition and had originally trained for the ministry; his own religious views shifted across his lifetime from comfortable Christian orthodoxy to deistic agnosticism. Roman Catholic responses were initially negative but gradually accommodating: Pope Leo XIII's 1893 encyclical Providentissimus Deus permitted Catholic acceptance of evolution while reserving the immediate creation of the human soul to divine intervention. Protestant theological responses ranged from the late-nineteenth-century American fundamentalist tradition's outright rejection (which produced the 1925 Scopes Trial in Tennessee) to liberal-Protestant integration of evolution with Christian theology (the late-Victorian "broad church" movement in the Anglican Communion).

The Descent of Man and human evolution. The Origin of Species had carefully avoided systematic discussion of human evolution. The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, published February 1871, presented Darwin's full argument for human descent from earlier primate ancestors. The book argued that humans share common ancestry with other primates; that human moral, intellectual, and physical capacities can be explained by gradual evolutionary development; and that the differences among human "races" (a term Darwin used in the contemporary sense) reflect adaptation to different environmental conditions rather than separate creations. Darwin himself rejected the most extreme racialist interpretations of his theory, but the book unavoidably raised questions about race, sex, and human social evolution that other writers would soon address in less careful ways.

Spencer and Social Darwinism. Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) was a British philosopher and social theorist who had developed a theory of social evolution before Darwin's Origin appeared. Spencer's Social Statics (1851) had argued that human societies progress through stages of increasing complexity and individualization. After 1859, Spencer enthusiastically adopted Darwinian terminology and applied it to society. His Principles of Biology (1864) coined the phrase "survival of the fittest" as a synonym for Darwinian natural selection — a phrase Darwin himself adopted in the fifth edition of the Origin (1869). Spencer's voluminous writings (the multi-volume System of Synthetic Philosophy, published in installments from 1862 to 1896) attempted to integrate biological evolution, social evolution, ethical theory, and political philosophy.

The political implications Spencer drew from social evolution were libertarian: state intervention to assist the poor, regulate industry, or redistribute wealth was held to interfere with the natural process of social selection that drove human progress. Spencer's The Man Versus the State (1884) was the principal late-Victorian articulation of this position. Spencer's American disciples (William Graham Sumner at Yale; the popularizer John Fiske) extended Social Darwinist analysis to American economic and social policy debates. Late-nineteenth-century American business leaders (Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller) frequently invoked Social Darwinist categories to justify large industrial fortunes and oppose regulation.

The phrase "Social Darwinism" itself was used pejoratively rather than as self-description through most of the late nineteenth century; the term was popularized in its modern usage by historian Richard Hofstadter's Social Darwinism in American Thought (1944). Contemporary writers tended to speak of "evolutionary ethics" or simply "evolutionary thinking" applied to society. The label nonetheless captures the cluster of late-nineteenth-century social-political doctrines that derived their authority from biological-evolutionary categories.

Galton and eugenics. Francis Galton (1822-1911) was Darwin's first cousin and the principal architect of late-Victorian eugenics. Galton's Hereditary Genius (1869) attempted to demonstrate that intellectual capacity is largely heritable, using statistical analysis of British scientific, judicial, and ecclesiastical families. Inquiries into Human Faculty (1883) coined the term "eugenics" (from the Greek for "well-born") to name the application of selective-breeding principles to human reproduction. Galton's program had two elements: positive eugenics (encouraging reproduction by individuals possessing desirable traits) and negative eugenics (discouraging or preventing reproduction by individuals possessing undesirable traits). The eugenics movement had broad late-Victorian and early-twentieth-century scientific and political support across Britain, Germany, the United States, and Scandinavia. The early-twentieth-century application of eugenic doctrines — the American sterilization laws (more than 60,000 sterilizations across thirty-three states between 1907 and the 1970s); the German racial-hygiene laws of the 1930s and the catastrophic Nazi extension of those laws into mass extermination — eventually produced both political reaction and scientific rejection of the eugenic project.

Social Darwinism and imperial-racialist ideology. Social Darwinist categories shaped late-nineteenth-century European thinking about empire and race in two principal ways. First, they provided the principal pseudo-scientific framework for the imperial-justification ideology that Topic 7.6 covers: European cultural and racial superiority over colonized peoples could be presented as a consequence of natural-evolutionary processes rather than as mere assertion. Kipling's "white man's burden" (Topic 7.1 source) and the French mission civilisatrice drew their persuasive force from the implicit Social Darwinist framework. Second, Social Darwinist categories shaped the racialist nationalism that Topic 7.2 covers: the Houston Stewart Chamberlain version of late-century anti-Semitic theory (Foundations of the Nineteenth Century, 1899) drew explicitly on biological-evolutionary categories to justify racial hierarchy. The early-twentieth-century synthesis of Social Darwinism with eugenic doctrines and German nationalist politics would eventually contribute to the racial-political catastrophes of the 1930s and 1940s.

The Skill 2.C analytical task. Topic 7.4's suggested skill is 2.C (Sourcing and Situation: explain the significance of a source's point of view, purpose, historical situation, and/or audience). The skill applies to Darwinian and Social Darwinist sources in particular ways. Darwin's biological writings were addressed to scientific specialists and grounded in extensive empirical observation; their point of view is naturalistic and evidentiary, their purpose is scientific explanation, their situation is the mid-Victorian British scientific community, and their audience is fellow scientists. Spencer's social-evolutionary writings were addressed to the educated public, grounded principally in deductive reasoning from broad evolutionary premises rather than in empirical observation; their point of view is libertarian-individualist, their purpose is political-philosophical justification of late-Victorian capitalism, their situation is the Long Depression and the rise of socialist political movements, and their audience is the educated middle class. The Social Darwinist applications by imperial advocates and racialist nationalists differ further in point of view, purpose, situation, and audience. Strong responses to Topic 7.4 questions distinguish among these layers of intellectual production rather than treating "Darwinism" as a single uniform doctrine.

The book extended his theory to human evolution and argued explicitly for human descent from earlier primate ancestors. Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) published Social Statics in 1851, eight years before the Origin of Species. "The cosmic process has no sort of relation to moral ends; the imitation of it by man is inconsistent with the first principles of ethics. What we call goodness or virtue involves a course of conduct which, in all respects, is opposed to that which leads to success in the cosmic struggle for existence. In place of ruthless self-assertion it demands self-restraint; in place of thrusting aside, or treading down, all competitors, it requires that the individual shall not merely respect, but shall help his fellows; its influence is directed, not so much to the survival of the fittest, as to the fitting of as many as possible to survive."

Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) was the principal British biologist of the second half of the nineteenth century and Darwin's closest scientific defender. He delivered the Romanes Lecture at Oxford on 18 May 1893 under the title "Evolution and Ethics." The lecture explicitly rejected the Spencerian Social Darwinist position and argued that biological evolution and ethical conduct were fundamentally distinct domains. Huxley's argument — that the cosmic process of natural selection cannot serve as a guide for human ethical conduct — was the principal late-Victorian scientific dissent from Social Darwinism and helped establish the modern distinction between Darwinian biology (as an empirical scientific theory) and Social Darwinism (as a separate political-ethical doctrine that does not actually follow from the biology).
