Consequences of Agricultural Practices

Farming feeds the world, but it also transforms it. Pollution, land-cover change, desertification, and soil salinization are the environmental costs. Changing diets, women's roles, and the shift from family farms to agribusiness are the societal ones. But the future also holds organic farming, farm-to-table movements, and the food-desert challenge.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to (per CED LO IMP-5.A):

Key Concepts

Per CED LO IMP-5.A, this lesson asks students to "explain consequences of agricultural practices." The CED then breaks those consequences into three EKs: environmental (IMP-5.A.1), societal (IMP-5.A.2), and opportunity/response (IMP-5.A.3). All three are testable. This lesson is organized around them directly.

Why consequences matter

Agriculture uses roughly half of Earth's habitable land and 70 percent of global freshwater withdrawals. Its footprint is enormous. It is also the main driver of deforestation worldwide, a major source of nitrogen pollution, and responsible for around 10-12 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions (agricultural activity directly; higher when land-use change is included). These are the scale facts behind the EKs.

Opportunities, not just costs

Per EK IMP-5.A.3, "changes in food production and consumption present opportunities for future economic and cultural changes." This is an important framing. The CED does not treat agricultural change as purely destructive. Organic farming, fair trade, farm-to-table, community-supported agriculture, and local-food movements are all opportunities named or implied in the standard.

Environmental Impacts (EK IMP-5.A.1)

The CED names five environmental effects explicitly. Each is directly testable.

Pollution

Fertilizer & Pesticide Runoff

Excess nitrogen and phosphorus from chemical fertilizers wash into rivers, creating algal blooms and coastal "dead zones." Pesticide residues enter food, water, and non-target species.

Land-Cover Change

Deforestation & Conversion

Forest, grassland, and wetland converted to cropland and pasture. The biggest single driver of biodiversity loss globally. Amazon deforestation is largely for cattle and soy; Southeast Asia forest loss for palm oil.

Desertification

Productive Land to Desert

Overgrazing, over-cultivation, and water-table drawdown in semi-arid regions turn productive land into desert. The process is often self-reinforcing: less vegetation → less soil moisture → less vegetation.

Soil Salinization

Irrigation-Induced Salt Buildup

When irrigation water evaporates in dry climates, it leaves dissolved salts behind. Over decades, soil becomes too salty for crops. Affected Mesopotamia, the Aral Sea region, and California's Central Valley.

Conservation Efforts

Response & Mitigation

Not all effects are negative. Crop rotation, cover cropping, terracing, no-till farming, wetland restoration, and precision agriculture reduce damage and can rebuild soils. Named explicitly in EK IMP-5.A.1 as part of the environmental story.

Water Use & GHG Emissions

Agriculture uses about 70% of global freshwater withdrawals; livestock methane, rice paddies, and fertilizer N₂O emit roughly 10-12% of global greenhouse gases. Not explicitly named in EK, but close adjacent content.

Societal Impacts (EK IMP-5.A.2)

Per EK IMP-5.A.2, agricultural practices have societal effects including changing diets, the role of women in agricultural production, and the shift from family farms to agribusiness. All three are explicit CED content.

Changing diets

As countries develop, diets shift toward more animal protein, processed foods, and imported fruits/vegetables. This nutrition transition strains both global resources (more meat = more grain, land, and water per calorie) and public health (rising obesity and diabetes in middle-income countries). China's per-capita meat consumption grew from ~15kg/year in 1980 to ~65kg/year today.

The role of women in agricultural production

The CED names women's role explicitly. Globally, women do about 40-60 percent of agricultural labor but own a much smaller share of farmland and have less access to credit, extension services, and tools. In sub-Saharan Africa, women are often the primary producers of subsistence food crops. Lesson 5.12 (Women in Agriculture) develops this further; here, it is one of three named societal consequences.

The shift from family farms to agribusiness

The CED's final named societal effect is the shift from family farms to agribusiness. In the US, the number of farms fell from around 6 million in 1930 to ~2 million in 2026, while average farm size more than tripled. Corporate agribusiness (Cargill, Tyson, JBS, Nestlé) now controls large shares of grain trading, meat processing, and food manufacturing. The family-farm model survives but with reduced share.

Opportunities (EK IMP-5.A.3)

Per EK IMP-5.A.3, "changes in food production and consumption present opportunities for future economic and cultural changes." Four opportunities dominate the modern landscape.

Organic Farming

Farming without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, certified under national standards (USDA Organic, EU Organic). Premium prices can make it profitable; ~5-6% of US food sales by 2024.

Economic opportunity

Farm-to-Table & Local Food

Direct producer-to-consumer sales, community-supported agriculture (CSAs), farmers markets. Strengthens rural economies and local food systems; reduces supply chain length.

Cultural + economic opportunity

Fair Trade & Specialty Crops

Fair-trade coffee, cocoa, and bananas pay producers a premium for verified labor standards. Specialty crops (single-origin coffee, heritage grains) capture higher margin.

Economic + ethical opportunity

The Food Desert Challenge

A food desert is a low-income area with limited access to fresh, affordable food. Named in many CED materials as part of EK IMP-5.A.3. Urban agriculture, mobile markets, and corner-store reform are responses.

Brazil flag

Brazil · Land-Cover Change

~18% of Amazon deforested; soy/cattle driven

Brazil is the canonical case of land-cover change. Roughly 18 percent of the original Amazon rainforest has been cleared, primarily for cattle pasture and soybean production for export. The 2023-24 period showed partial recovery as Brazilian enforcement strengthened, but the underlying pressure remains.

Uzbekistan · Salinization & Aral Sea

Aral Sea ~90% shrunk by 2020s

Soviet-era cotton irrigation diverted the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, shrinking the Aral Sea to roughly 10 percent of its 1960 size. Irrigated cropland across Uzbekistan has suffered severe salinization; dust storms blow salt across the region. The clearest modern demonstration of EK IMP-5.A.1 salinization.

United States · Shift to Agribusiness

Farms: ~6M (1930) → ~2M (2026); avg 464 acres

The US shows EK IMP-5.A.2's agribusiness shift at national scale. The number of farms fell from around 6 million in 1930 to around 2 million by 2026; average farm size more than tripled. Four firms (Cargill, JBS, Tyson, National Beef) control around 85 percent of US beef processing. The family farm persists but controls a diminishing share of output.

Italy leads the EU in certified organic farmland. The "slow food" movement began in Italy in 1986 as a response to industrial agriculture; the country combines organic production, Protected Designations of Origin (PDO), and farm-to-table agritourism as explicit EK IMP-5.A.3 opportunities. It is what post-agribusiness response can look like.
