Spatial Organization of Agriculture

Three CED-named contemporary trends are reshaping farming everywhere: large-scale commercial operations replacing family farms, complex commodity chains linking production to consumption, and technology increasing economies of scale and the carrying capacity of land.

The consolidation trend

Per EK PSO-5.C.3, family farms are being replaced by large commercial operations. The trend is decades-old in developed countries. The US went from about 6.8 million farms in 1935 to fewer than 2 million today, while average farm size more than tripled. Similar consolidation has happened across Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and increasingly in Brazil, Argentina, and parts of Eastern Europe. The driver is economies of scale (EK C.5).

United States · Family Farm Decline

Farm count fell ~70% (1935-2025); avg size tripled

The US is the textbook case of family-farm consolidation per EK PSO-5.C.3. About 6.8 million farms in 1935 became fewer than 2 million today. Average farm size grew from ~155 acres to over 460 acres. The largest 4% of US farms now produce more than half of agricultural output. Iowa corn-soybean farms, California vegetable operations, and Midwest hog operations all show the consolidation pattern.

Colombia · Coffee Commodity Chain

~3rd largest coffee producer; ~$3B annual exports

Colombian coffee illustrates a textbook commodity chain per EK PSO-5.C.4. Beans grown by Colombian farmers (often smallholders) are bought by exporters, shipped to roasters in the US, EU, and Japan, packaged for retail, and sold to consumers worldwide. Each link in the chain is in a different country; value capture concentrates downstream (roasters and retailers earn far more than growers).

Brazil · Soy Economies of Scale

~140M tonnes soy (2024); world's largest exporter

Brazilian soy illustrates economies of scale per EK PSO-5.C.5. The cerrado (Brazilian savanna) supports vast soy plantations of thousands of hectares each. GMO seeds, precision agriculture, mechanized harvest, and integrated logistics infrastructure mean per-acre costs are competitive with anywhere on Earth. Brazil overtook the US as the world's largest soy exporter in the 2010s.

Japan · Persistent Family Farms

Average farm size only ~3 hectares

Japan is the counter-example to family-farm decline. Average Japanese farm size is only about 3 hectares (vs ~185 hectares average in the US). Government policy, mountainous terrain, and cultural attachment to family farming have preserved small operations. The cost is high food prices and a shrinking aging farming population — many believe Japan's small-farm model is approaching collapse.

  3. Per EK PSO-5.C.5, technology has increased the carrying capacity of the land. What technologies are most responsible? Are there limits to how much technology can keep increasing carrying capacity?
  4. Japan has resisted family-farm consolidation through government policy. The result is high food prices and a small farm sector but preservation of rural communities. Is the Japanese model worth the costs? Could other countries copy it?
  5. Connect Topic 5.7 to Topic 1.5 (Human-Environmental Interaction). Carrying capacity (EK C.5) was discussed in 1.5 in the context of sustainability. Has agricultural technology pushed the land beyond sustainable carrying capacity, or just expanded it temporarily?

Each pair picks one agricultural commodity (coffee, chocolate, beef, palm oil, t-shirt cotton) and traces its production-to-consumption commodity chain. They identify each step, the country involved, and the share of total value captured at that step. They produce an annotated diagram.

Pairs receive USDA data on US farm count and average farm size, 1935 to today. They graph the trends, identify the rate of decline, and write a one-paragraph explanation linking the data to EKs PSO-5.C.3 and C.5.
