Early History: the Founding of Chichen Itza

Ceramic evidence from surface surveys and some excavations suggests that the site may have been first settled during the early centuries of the Common Era, and some scholars have proposed even earlier occupation, though monumental construction appears to have begun in earnest in what archaeologists call the Terminal Classic period, roughly 800 to 1000 CE. There is also evidence for a significant occupation during the Early Classic period (250 to 600 CE) by a group that used a ceramic tradition known as Motul, suggesting that the site had an important settlement long before the massive construction phase that produced the monuments visitors see today.
Traditional Maya historical accounts, recorded after the Spanish conquest in documents such as the Books of Chilam Balam — a series of prophetic and historical texts compiled in colonial-era Yucatan — describe Chichen Itza as having been established by the Itza people, a Maya group whose origins and affiliations remain subjects of debate. The Itza People: Identity and Origins

One interpretation is that the Itza were a Maya group from the southern lowlands — possibly the Peten region — who migrated northward and established themselves at the site of the cenotes in the northern Yucatan. Another interpretation, which aligns with the older scholarly view of strong Toltec influence at the site, holds that the Itza had a mixed heritage that included connections to the Gulf Coast or even central Mexico, and that their somewhat anomalous identity in Maya sources reflects genuine cultural and ethnic distinctiveness from the surrounding Yucatec Maya population.
What is clear from the archaeological record is that the Itza who built and occupied Chichen Itza were deeply engaged with the wider world of Mesoamerica in a way that is unusual even for a great Maya city. The iconography of Chichen Itza, the sculptural programs of its major temples, and the objects recovered from the Sacred Cenote all testify to connections that extend far beyond the Yucatan Peninsula — connections to the Gulf Coast, to central Mexico, to the Guatemalan highlands, and across the Caribbean — that made Chichen Itza one of the most cosmopolitan centers in the pre-Columbian Americas.
El Castillo: Temple of the Feathered Serpent
No monument at Chichen Itza is more famous, or more immediately recognizable, than El Castillo — The Castle — the great stepped pyramid that rises from the center of the northern part of the site to a height of approximately 30 meters above the surrounding plain. Known more formally as the Temple of Kukulcan, after the Yucatec Maya name for the feathered serpent deity who played a central role in Mesoamerican religion across many centuries and cultures, El Castillo is a masterwork of architectural symbolism in which virtually every measurable dimension encodes a mathematical or calendrical meaning.
The pyramid is built on a square base approximately 55 meters on each side and rises in nine terraced levels to the flat summit on which a temple stands. Each of the pyramid's four sides features a grand staircase of 91 steps. Four staircases of 91 steps equals 364 steps; add the single step of the summit platform itself and the total is 365 — the precise number of days in the solar year. The pyramid has eighteen terraced sections on each face, corresponding to the eighteen months of the Maya solar calendar, and 52 inset panels in the facade, the number equal to the length of the Calendar Round — the cycle of 52 years produced by the meshing of the 365-day solar calendar with the 260-day ritual calendar, after which all dates repeat. El Castillo is not merely a pyramid; it is a three-dimensional calendar, a built embodiment of the Maya conception of time.
The feathered serpent theme is carried through in the most spectacular feature of El Castillo: the equinox phenomenon. Twice each year, at the spring equinox in late March and again at the autumnal equinox in late September, the afternoon sun strikes the northwest corner of the pyramid in such a way as to cast a series of triangular shadows along the northern staircase balustrade. As the sun descends toward the horizon, these triangular shadows lengthen and appear to move, creating the illusion of a great serpent undulating down the staircase — a body of seven connected triangles of light and shadow that terminates at the base of the staircase in the carved stone head of a feathered serpent that has been positioned there precisely for this purpose. The phenomenon lasts for approximately forty-five minutes to an hour around the time of each equinox, and today it draws tens of thousands of visitors to Chichen Itza. Whether the Maya who built El Castillo intended this effect is sometimes questioned, but the precision of the alignment and the known importance of equinoctial dates in Maya calendrical thought make intentional design by far the most plausible explanation.
Inside El Castillo, archaeologists discovered an earlier pyramid entirely encased within the outer structure — a common feature of Mesoamerican pyramid architecture, in which later builders enclosed earlier monuments rather than destroying them. The inner pyramid contains a throne chamber reached by a narrow internal staircase, and the throne itself is a remarkable artifact: a life-sized red-painted jaguar sculpture with jade spots and jade eyes, sitting on a platform in near-perfect preservation after centuries of sealed darkness. This inner chamber was opened to the public for many years but was closed to preserve the jaguar throne, one of the most extraordinary objects ever found in Maya archaeology. More recently, using ground-penetrating radar and other non-invasive techniques, Mexican archaeologists announced the discovery of yet another structure — a third, still-older pyramid — nested within the second, suggesting that the sacred hill of El Castillo preserves a sequence of construction going back further still.
The Great Ball Court
If El Castillo is the visual centerpiece of Chichen Itza, the Great Ball Court is arguably the most impressive single structure at the site — and certainly the largest of its kind anywhere in the pre-Columbian world. Located to the northwest of El Castillo, the court measures 168 meters in length and 70 meters in width, making it so large that scholars have debated whether the game played on it was physically possible with the equipment known from smaller courts. The walls rise to approximately 8 meters on each side and are topped by two stone rings set vertically into the wall at the midpoint of each side. The object of the ball game, at least in its classic form, was to drive a heavy solid rubber ball through one of these rings without using the hands — a feat of extraordinary athletic precision given the size and weight of the ball and the height of the rings above the playing surface.
The Great Ball Court is bounded by parallel stone walls that still stand to their full original height, and both walls are decorated with carved stone panels depicting the ceremony associated with the conclusion of a game, including the decapitation of one of the players. The significance of these carvings has been a topic of intense scholarly interest. The imagery strongly suggests that the ball game had profound ritual significance, possibly reenacting mythological events connected to the cycles of the sun, the moon, and the agricultural calendar, and that sacrifice was at least sometimes part of its conclusion.
The acoustic properties of the Great Ball Court are extraordinary and may reflect intentional engineering. A whisper spoken at one end of the court carries clearly to the other end, 168 meters away, without any amplification — an effect created by the geometry of the parallel stone walls. Researchers who have studied the acoustics of the court have suggested that it may have been engineered to produce specific effects during ritual events, transforming the court into a sonic as well as visual theater.
At each end of the Great Ball Court stands a smaller temple, and to the east there is the Temple of the Jaguars, which features elaborate carvings of jaguars, feathered serpents, and processional warriors. The upper temple of the Temple of the Jaguars contains mural fragments depicting battle scenes and ceremonial processions in a style that blends Maya and non-Maya elements.
The Temple of the Warriors and the Group of a Thousand Columns
To the east of El Castillo stands the Temple of the Warriors, one of the most imposing structures at Chichen Itza and one whose parallels with structures at the distant site of Tula in central Mexico have fed the long-running debate about Toltec influence at the city. The temple is a stepped pyramid of four terraces, crowned by a colonnaded hall that once supported a perishable roof, approached by a grand staircase flanked by feathered serpent columns whose tails rest on the ground at the base of the stairs and whose open-mouthed serpent heads support the lintels at the top.
At the top of the staircase, immediately before the entrance to the temple, stands a chacmool — one of the most distinctive and enigmatic sculptural types of ancient Mesoamerica. The chacmool is a reclining human figure with the head turned sharply to one side, lying on its back with its knees drawn up and a flat depression in the abdomen that appears to have served as a receptacle for offerings. Chacmools appear at both Chichen Itza and at Tula, among other sites, and their distribution is one of the key pieces of evidence cited in discussions of cultural connections between the Maya and the Toltecs.
Before the Temple of the Warriors, stretching to the south, stands what is known as the Group of a Thousand Columns — a vast, colonnaded space in which rows of carved stone columns once supported a massive wooden and thatch roof over what was probably a marketplace, reception hall, or assembly space of enormous proportions. The columns are carved with standing warrior figures in a repetitive pattern that covers hundreds of individual shafts. At its height, this colonnaded hall would have been one of the largest covered interior spaces in all of Mesoamerica, a testament to the organizational and logistical capabilities of whoever was responsible for its construction.
The Sacred Cenote and the Cult of Chaac
Perhaps no feature of Chichen Itza is more saturated with historical drama than the Sacred Cenote, the great natural well located approximately 300 meters north of El Castillo along a broad ceremonial causeway known as a sacbe. The cenote is roughly circular, about 60 meters across, with sheer walls of gray limestone dropping vertically some 22 to 25 meters to the water surface. Below the water, the cenote plunges to a muddy bottom roughly 15 to 17 meters deeper still. The surface of the water is dark green from algae and gives the cenote a brooding, almost oppressive atmosphere.
The Maya dedicated the Sacred Cenote to Chaac, the deity of rain and lightning, one of the most important gods in the Yucatec Maya pantheon. Chaac was typically depicted with a long curling snout, serpentine fangs, and scales, and his favor was essential in a landscape with no surface rivers, where the agricultural calendar depended entirely on rainfall. Offerings cast into the Sacred Cenote were prayers made material — precious objects given to Chaac in exchange for the rain that sustained life.
The offerings recovered from the cenote include jade jewelry and figurines, gold discs embossed with scenes of warriors and sacrifice, copper bells and ornaments, carved bone and shell objects, incense balls of copal resin, and fragments of textiles — among the earliest pre-Columbian cloth fragments ever recovered. Gold objects found in the cenote came not only from the Yucatan but from as far away as Central America and Colombia, testifying to the wide reach of Chichen Itza's trade networks and the cenote's fame as a sacred site across a vast region.
Human remains were also found. Colonial-era Spanish sources, including the account written by Bishop Diego de Landa in the sixteenth century, described the practice of throwing human beings into the Sacred Cenote as offerings to Chaac, particularly in times of drought. Physical evidence — human skeletal remains of men, women, and children — recovered from the cenote in substantial quantities confirmed these accounts.
Edward Thompson and the Dredging of the Sacred Cenote
The dramatic recovery of the Sacred Cenote's contents is inseparable from the story of Edward Herbert Thompson, an American diplomat and amateur archaeologist who served as the United States consul in Merida at the turn of the twentieth century. Thompson had been fascinated by the Maya since reading John Lloyd Stephens's accounts of his Yucatan travels in the 1840s, and when he was appointed consul he used his position to pursue archaeological investigations at Chichen Itza, which he eventually purchased in the 1890s as part of a hacienda property.
In 1904, Thompson began the project that would make him famous — and notorious. Using a steel dredge lowered by a derrick erected on the cenote's south rim, Thompson and his workers began extracting the accumulated sediment from the bottom of the Sacred Cenote. The dredge scooped up pailfuls of mud and organic material that were hauled to the surface and carefully examined, and from this material came an astonishing array of artifacts: jade ornaments of extraordinary craftsmanship, gold discs embossed with scenes of warriors and sacrifice, copper bells, worked bone and shell, copal incense, fragments of wooden objects, and textile fragments. Human skeletal material also came up in quantity.
Thompson later supplemented the dredging operation with his own diving, descending in a bulky, early-model diving suit to search the cenote's bottom by hand. He worked in near-zero visibility in water thick with sediment, feeling his way along the muddy bottom and retrieving objects by touch. The operation, lasting from 1904 to approximately 1910, was one of the most ambitious and unconventional archaeological projects of its era.
Thompson shipped the majority of his finds to the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where they formed the basis of a major Maya collection. His removal of artifacts from Mexico without government permission was a violation of Mexican law, and the Mexican government eventually brought legal action and confiscated the Chichen Itza hacienda. Many objects were eventually returned to Mexico, though some remain in the Peabody collection to this day. Despite the controversy surrounding his methods, Thompson's work at the Sacred Cenote opened a window into the ritual life of ancient Chichen Itza that no other investigation had approached.
El Caracol: Window on the Cosmos
Among the most intellectually fascinating structures at Chichen Itza is the building known as El Caracol — The Snail — a circular tower that rises from a broad, rectangular platform in the southern part of the site. The nickname comes from the spiral interior staircase, reminiscent of a snail shell, that winds up through the core of the tower. But El Caracol is far more than a curiosity of architectural form: it is one of the best-documented astronomical observatories in the ancient Americas, and its alignments with celestial phenomena reveal the depth and precision of Maya astronomical knowledge.
The circular form of El Caracol is itself unusual in Maya architecture, which almost universally favored rectangular forms. The decision to build a round tower at this particular location was almost certainly driven by the requirements of astronomical observation: a circular structure allows observation in any compass direction without needing to move to a different window or opening. The narrow window slits in the upper story of the tower were precisely aligned to track key astronomical events. Several windows align with the setting sun at the spring equinox and with the maximum northern and southern positions of Venus on the horizon — the points at which the planet, which the Maya tracked with extraordinary care, reaches its most extreme northern or southern setting point before reversing direction.
The importance of Venus to the Maya cannot be overstated. Venus was identified with the deity Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli — the Morning Star — and its movements were correlated with both agricultural calendars and the timing of ritual activities including warfare. Maya astronomers had calculated the Venus cycle with extraordinary accuracy, determining that 8 solar years of 365 days equal almost exactly 5 Venus synodic periods of approximately 584 days. This remarkable coincidence allowed Maya astronomers to produce tables predicting the future appearances and disappearances of Venus with great precision, tables that are preserved in the Dresden Codex, one of the four pre-Columbian Maya books that survive. El Caracol's alignments suggest that Chichen Itza's astronomers were engaged in precisely this kind of observation and calculation, connecting the physical observatory to the intellectual tradition documented in the codices.
The broader platform on which El Caracol sits also appears to be astronomically aligned, with its orientation differing from the main axis of the Chichen Itza ceremonial zone by about 27 degrees — a deviation that matches the angle of Venus at its northernmost setting point. Some researchers have proposed that the entire complex of El Caracol and its platform represents an integrated astronomical instrument designed to track multiple celestial bodies and phenomena simultaneously, a kind of built-in scientific infrastructure for the community of astronomer-priests who were responsible for maintaining the calendars on which Maya society depended.
The Toltec Connection: the Greatest Debate in Northern Maya Archaeology
No question in the archaeology of ancient Mexico has proven more durable or more contentious than the relationship between Chichen Itza and Tula, the city in the present-day state of Hidalgo that is generally identified as the capital of the Toltec civilization. The parallels between the two sites are so striking, so numerous, and so specific that they have fascinated and perplexed scholars since they were first systematically described in the mid-twentieth century. Yet the explanation for these parallels remains deeply disputed, and different scholars have reached very different conclusions about what the similarities mean.
The architectural and artistic parallels between Chichen Itza and Tula are genuinely remarkable. Both sites feature warrior columns — massive four-sided pillars carved on all faces with standing warrior figures in nearly identical costumes and postures. Both sites have chacmool sculptures in virtually the same form. Both sites feature the Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli imagery — the feathered serpent as Morning Star deity — in their architectural decoration. Both sites have colonnaded halls of similar design. Both sites feature the motif known as the Coatepantli or Wall of Serpents, in which rows of carved serpent bodies are arranged in continuous friezes. Both sites use relief carvings depicting jaguars and eagles consuming human hearts — an image with clear sacrificial connotations. The list goes on and on, and the cumulative weight of the parallels is difficult to dismiss as coincidence.
The traditional explanation, first developed in detail by scholars including Sylvanus Morley and George Vaillant in the early and mid-twentieth century, was straightforward: the Toltecs conquered Chichen Itza. According to this view, the Toltec king Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl led a Toltec army from Tula to the Yucatan around 987 CE, conquered Chichen Itza, and introduced the religious, artistic, and political traditions of Tula into the conquered city. The Toltec Chichen Itza — as the newer, northern part of the site came to be called — was thus understood as a colonial outpost of the Toltec state, with its warrior columns and serpent imagery representing the imposition of central Mexican culture on the older Maya city.
This interpretation was supported by Maya written sources, particularly the Books of Chilam Balam, which describe the arrival of a figure called Kukulcan — the Maya translation of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent — from the west, his establishment of a new political order at Chichen Itza, and his eventual departure. The historical Aztec sources from central Mexico similarly describe Quetzalcoatl's departure from Tula toward the east, creating a near-perfect narrative alignment between the Mexican and Maya sources that seemed to confirm the conquest hypothesis.
However, beginning in the 1980s and accelerating through the 1990s and 2000s, this model came under sustained critical attack. A new generation of scholars argued that the traditional account had several serious problems. First, the chronology did not work: radiocarbon dating and careful stratigraphic analysis suggested that the monuments at Chichen Itza that show the closest parallels with Tula might actually be earlier than the comparable structures at Tula itself, which would make a Toltec conquest of Chichen Itza chronologically impossible — you cannot export what has not yet been created. Second, the parallels between the two sites, while genuine, were not as close as the traditional account assumed; closer examination revealed significant differences in style, iconography, and architectural detail that suggested independent development of shared traditions rather than direct copying. Third, the narrative sources — the Books of Chilam Balam and the Aztec traditions about Quetzalcoatl — were compiled centuries after the events they described and were clearly mixed with mythological and prophetic content that made them unreliable as straightforward historical documents.
The revisionist position, associated with scholars like David Kelley and Geoffrey Braswell, proposed that rather than a Toltec conquest of Chichen Itza, the similarities between the two sites reflected a shared participation in a broader Mesoamerican cultural and ideological complex that was not the exclusive product of any single city or people. On this view, the warrior-feathered serpent complex, the chacmool tradition, and the other shared elements represented a pan-Mesoamerican ideology of rulership and militarism that was shared and expressed somewhat differently at multiple centers. Chichen Itza was not a colony of Tula but a co-participant in a common culture.
The debate has not been resolved, and it probably cannot be fully resolved with the current evidence. What most scholars now accept is a more nuanced picture: some form of contact and interaction between the Yucatan and central Mexico certainly occurred during the Terminal Classic and Early Postclassic periods, and this contact is reflected in the genuine similarities between Chichen Itza and Tula. Whether that contact took the form of conquest, migration, trade, marriage alliance, or the diffusion of religious ideas without population movement remains unclear. What is clear is that Chichen Itza was a cosmopolitan center engaged in exchanges with the wider Mesoamerican world, and that this engagement transformed both its architecture and its religious and political culture in ways that left permanent and visible marks in the ruins that survive today.
Religion, Kukulcan, and the Feathered Serpent Cult
At the center of Chichen Itza's religious life stood the cult of Kukulcan, the Yucatec Maya version of the Mesoamerican feathered serpent deity who was known as Quetzalcoatl in Nahuatl, the language of the Toltecs and later the Aztecs. The feathered serpent — a cobra or rattlesnake body adorned with the brilliant green feathers of the quetzal bird — was one of the most widespread and persistent religious symbols in all of ancient Mesoamerica, appearing in one form or another from the Formative period through the Spanish conquest and serving as a symbol of wind, water, fertility, and divine rulership across an enormous geographic and temporal range.
At Chichen Itza, Kukulcan appears on virtually every major monument. The serpent columns of the Temple of the Warriors, the feathered serpent balustrades of El Castillo's staircase, the serpent-head decoration of the Platform of the Eagles and Jaguars, the imagery of the Great Ball Court — all invoke the feathered serpent deity in one form or another. The equinox phenomenon of El Castillo, in which a serpent of light and shadow descends the pyramid's north staircase each spring and autumn, is the most spectacular and most visited manifestation of this pervasive religious iconography.
The cult of Kukulcan was not merely decorative or aesthetic. The feathered serpent deity was associated with a specific set of religious meanings that were central to the legitimation of political power at Chichen Itza. Kukulcan/Quetzalcoatl was the patron of knowledge, learning, and calendrical calculation — the divine patron, in a sense, of the astronomer-priests who kept the calendar and predicted the movements of the heavenly bodies. He was also associated with rulership itself, and the identification of a ruler with the feathered serpent deity was a powerful statement of divine mandate and political authority. To build a temple in the shape of a calendar pyramid crowned with feathered serpent imagery, oriented so that the serpent god appeared to descend from the sky twice each year at the equinoxes, was to make a monumental claim about the divine nature and cosmic legitimacy of the power centered at Chichen Itza.
Alongside Kukulcan, the Maya of Chichen Itza worshipped Chaac, the rain deity, with particular intensity. In the Yucatan, where rainfall was the only source of fresh water for agriculture and human survival, Chaac was perhaps the most practically important deity in the pantheon. Chaac masks — stacked repeated images of a long-snouted rain deity — appear on the facades of many structures at Chichen Itza, most notably on the older structures in the southern part of the site known as Old Chichen. The dedication of the Sacred Cenote to Chaac, and the continuous stream of precious offerings cast into its waters over many centuries, reflects the central importance of rain and water in the religious life and agricultural economy of this region.
Human sacrifice was practiced at Chichen Itza, as it was throughout Mesoamerica. The physical evidence from the Sacred Cenote, the imagery on the Great Ball Court walls, and numerous other iconographic programs at the site make this unambiguous. The nature, frequency, and social context of sacrifice at Chichen Itza were complex, however, and bear little resemblance to the sensationalized accounts that have sometimes been written for popular audiences. Sacrifice in Mesoamerican religious thought was not mere violence but a form of cosmic transaction: human life was offered to the gods in exchange for divine favor, and the continuation of the world itself was understood to depend on this exchange. The sacred ball game, which may have ended with the sacrifice of a player in some circumstances, was itself understood as a reenactment of mythological events — possibly including the story of the Hero Twins of the Popol Vuh, the great K'iche' Maya creation epic, who played ball against the Lords of Death and ultimately defeated them.
The Spanish Conquest and Bishop Diego de Landa
The Maya of Chichen Itza had long since abandoned the great city — the last inscription dating the occupation to around 1200 CE — when the Spanish arrived in the Yucatan in the early sixteenth century. The first Spanish incursions into the peninsula began in 1517 under Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba and continued with Hernando Cortes's coastal contacts during his 1519 voyage, but the full conquest of Yucatan proved far more difficult than the overthrow of the Aztec empire and took decades of brutal warfare against Maya resistance. The Spanish did not establish permanent control over the northern Yucatan until the 1540s, and even then pockets of Maya resistance persisted.
Among the most consequential and most controversial figures of the Spanish colonial period in Yucatan was Fray Diego de Landa, a Franciscan friar who became the first bishop of Yucatan and whose relationship to Maya culture was one of extraordinary ambivalence. On the one hand, Landa was deeply curious about Maya civilization and compiled a document — the Relacion de las Cosas de Yucatan, composed around 1566 — that remains one of the most important sources of information about Maya life, religion, and history from a period close to the conquest. Landa's Relacion includes descriptions of Maya religious practices, the Maya calendar, writing system, and the rituals practiced at the Sacred Cenote of Chichen Itza, which he describes with a detail that could only have come from either direct observation or testimony from Maya informants who had memory of pre-conquest practice.
On the other hand, Landa was responsible in 1562 for one of the most catastrophic acts of cultural destruction in the history of the Americas: the auto de fe at Mani, in which he ordered the burning of an unknown number of Maya books — the folded bark-paper manuscripts, or codices, in which the Maya recorded their history, astronomy, religious rituals, and accumulated knowledge. Landa believed the books were instruments of the devil, and he ordered them destroyed along with hundreds of carved Maya idols. Only four pre-Columbian Maya codices are known to survive today — the Dresden, Madrid, Paris, and recently authenticated Grolier codices — and the destruction Landa ordered at Mani means that an incalculable amount of Maya knowledge was lost forever. Landa later expressed some regret for the destruction, which was judged excessive even by his own superiors, but the damage was irreparable.
Despite this act of destruction, Landa's Relacion preserves information about Chichen Itza and the Sacred Cenote that is of immense historical value. His account of the cenote ritual — in which, he wrote, offerings including human beings were cast into the well to appease the rain deity — became one of the primary sources that led Edward Thompson to undertake his dredging operations three centuries later, vindicating Landa's testimony with physical evidence.
Modern Archaeology and Scientific Investigation
The systematic archaeological investigation of Chichen Itza began in the late nineteenth century and has continued with increasing sophistication to the present day. The early work was characterized by the dramatic and often cavalier approach of Thompson's cenote dredging, but subsequent investigations have been far more methodologically rigorous. The cenote system of the northern Yucatan, which was critical to the location and development of Chichen Itza, is also the subject of active investigation by specialists in geology, hydrology, and paleoecology, who are using data from the subterranean cave systems to reconstruct the climate history of the region and understand how changes in rainfall patterns may have affected the city's development and ultimate abandonment.
The Decline of Chichen Itza and the Rise of Mayapan
Chichen Itza's dominance over the northern Yucatan lasted for roughly three centuries, from approximately 900 CE to perhaps 1200 CE, though the exact chronology of its political decline, like so much else about the site, remains imperfectly understood. The Maya historical sources preserved in the Books of Chilam Balam describe the eventual downfall of Chichen Itza in terms that mix political history with mythological narrative, making it difficult to extract a clear factual account. What the sources agree on is that Chichen Itza was eventually overthrown or abandoned as a result of internal conflict, and that its successor as the dominant power in the northern Yucatan was Mayapan, a new city founded by a group called the Cocom, who established a different kind of political order in the region.
The Maya sources describe a confederacy of three cities — Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and Mayapan — known as the League of Mayapan, which is said to have governed the northern Yucatan jointly for a period before breaking apart. The founding of this league is associated in the sources with the arrival of Kukulcan, and its dissolution with the treachery of the Cocom ruler, who is said to have hired Mexican mercenaries to destroy the power of Chichen Itza. The reliability of these accounts is uncertain, and archaeology has not provided a clear picture of violent destruction at Chichen Itza in the relevant period. What is clear is that by around 1200 CE, Chichen Itza had ceased to be a major political center, though it retained religious significance as a pilgrimage destination — particularly for the Sacred Cenote — for centuries thereafter.
Mayapan, which rose to dominance after the fall of Chichen Itza, was a very different kind of city: smaller, more densely packed within a defensive wall, organized around the obligatory residence of provincial lords who were effectively held hostage at the capital to ensure the loyalty of their home territories. Mayapan itself collapsed in a rebellion around 1441 CE, and the northern Yucatan fragmented into a series of competing small states — the cacicazgos — that were still fighting among themselves when the Spanish arrived in the early sixteenth century. The spring equinox at Chichen Itza is now celebrated with an event that draws tens of thousands of visitors to the site on and around the date of the astronomical equinox, typically around March 20 or 21. The serpent shadow phenomenon of El Castillo — whether or not it was intentionally designed by the ancient Maya — has taken on new life as a focus of modern cultural tourism, and the gathering that surrounds it has evolved into a mixture of archaeological tourism, New Age spiritual practice, and Maya cultural revival. Chichen Itza remains under active archaeological investigation. The 2015 announcement of a subterranean cenote beneath El Castillo, confirmed using three-dimensional electrical resistivity tomography, represented the most important new discovery at the site in decades and opened new questions about the relationship between the pyramid's placement and the sacred landscape of the cenotes. Ongoing work by Mexican archaeologists continues to reveal new aspects of the city's planning, social organization, and material culture, and the application of increasingly sophisticated remote sensing, geophysical prospection, and environmental analysis methods promises to transform understanding of the site in the coming decades.
