Ha Long Bay is located in Quang Ninh Province of northeastern Vietnam, approximately 160 kilometers east of Hanoi, in the western portion of the Gulf of Tonkin. The UNESCO-inscribed World Heritage core zone covers approximately 434 square kilometers, while the broader Ha Long Bay area — including the adjacent Bai Tu Long Bay to the northeast and the Cat Ba Archipelago to the south — covers approximately 1,500 square kilometers. Within this broader area rise approximately 1,969 to 2,000 limestone islands and islets, of which 989 have been officially named. The great majority of these islands are uninhabited and inaccessible, their cliffs too sheer and their summits too densely forested to permit permanent settlement. They stand in their hundreds and thousands across the bay as monuments of pure geological force — stone towers, pyramids, cones, and arches arranged by the slow erosion of millions of years into a composition of such variety and beauty that it defies adequate description.
Ha Long Bay's international recognition has come in multiple waves. UNESCO first inscribed the bay as a World Heritage Site in 1994 under criteria relating to aesthetic and natural beauty; in 2000, a second inscription extended the recognized area and added criteria recognizing the site's outstanding geological and geomorphological significance. In 2023, UNESCO further expanded the inscribed area to encompass the Ha Long Bay-Cat Ba Archipelago, recognizing the interconnected biological and geological values of the broader seascape. In 2011, the bay was named one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature in a global poll organized by the New7Wonders Foundation, a designation that brought the site to worldwide popular attention and dramatically accelerated its already rapid growth as a tourism destination.

The Legend of the Descending Dragon
The Vietnamese name Ha Long Bay — Vinh Ha Long, "Bay of the Descending Dragon" — derives from a legend of great antiquity whose multiple versions share a common theme of divine protection and natural genesis. In the most widely told version of the myth, when the Vietnamese people faced invasion by enemies from the north in the distant past, the Jade Emperor sent a family of dragons from the heavens to help defend them. The mother dragon descended from the sky breathing jets of fire and jewels that fell into the sea. Where the jewels struck the water, they transformed instantly into the islands and rocky outcrops of the bay, forming an impenetrable natural barrier against the enemy fleet. The dragons, satisfied that their people were protected, made their home in the waters of the bay, and their descendants remain there to this day — their coiled and writhing forms preserved in the stone of the karst islands, frozen for eternity in the act of protecting the Vietnamese homeland.
An alternative version of the legend holds that a family of dragons descended not to protect against enemies but simply to visit the earthly world in which they delighted, and that the islands are the marks left by their tails as they swept through the sea in play or in blessing. In yet another variation, the "Baby Dragon Bay" — Bai Tu Long Bay, immediately adjacent to Ha Long Bay — takes its name from the offspring of the descending dragon, while Ha Long itself marks where the mother entered the sea. These variations in the myth reflect the different communities and historical periods through which the legend has been transmitted, but all share the fundamental understanding that the bay's extraordinary landscape is the product of divine or supernatural agency, and that the islands are in some sense living or spiritually charged entities rather than merely geological formations.
The legend of the descending dragon is not unique to Ha Long Bay in Vietnamese culture. Dragons are central figures in Vietnamese cosmology, art, and royal symbolism — associated with rain, water, fertility, and divine authority — and the landscape of the bay, with its innumerable island forms rising from the sea like the backs of surfacing creatures, has always invited interpretation through the lens of this mythological tradition. The name itself encapsulates the Vietnamese understanding of the bay's origin: the islands are not the product of impersonal geological processes but of a divine descent, a moment when the celestial and the earthly interpenetrated and the sky literally fell into the sea in the form of jewels and stone.
The Geology: How the Bay Was Made
The scientific account of Ha Long Bay's formation is, if anything, more astonishing than the legend. The limestone that forms the bay's islands is some 500 million years old, deposited in shallow tropical seas during the Paleozoic era as calcium carbonate from the shells and skeletons of marine organisms accumulated on the sea floor. Over hundreds of millions of years, these carbonate sediments were buried, compressed, and transformed into the dense limestone rock that today forms the bay's spectacular formations. The rock then underwent multiple episodes of tectonic uplift, which raised it above sea level and exposed it to the erosional forces of rain, wind, and groundwater chemistry.
The distinctive tower karst topography that gives Ha Long Bay its character developed over the last 20 million years under the influence of a warm, humid tropical climate. Karst landscapes — rocky terrains formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, or chalk by slightly acidic groundwater — take many forms across the world, but the marine-flooded tower karst of Ha Long Bay represents one of the most spectacular and geomorphologically significant of all karst types. UNESCO has described the bay as "the most extensive and best known example of marine-invaded tower karst in the world."
Two main types of tower karst topography characterize Ha Long Bay. The first is fengcong — "peak cluster" karst — in which individual peaks or towers share a common base and rise from an elevated karst landscape, their valleys and dolines connected by underground drainage systems. The second is fenglin — "peak forest" karst — in which isolated towers rise from a flat plain (or in the case of Ha Long Bay, from the sea surface itself), their bases surrounded by water rather than connected to adjacent peaks by shared bedrock. The interplay of these two karst types, combined with the flooding of the landscape by the sea as relative sea levels rose over the past several thousand years, has produced the extraordinarily diverse island morphology of the bay: some islands are solitary pinnacles rising with near-vertical walls from the water, others are clusters of peaks connected at the base, others are broad domed masses with internal lagoons accessible only through narrow sea-level passages at low tide.
The sea itself continues to shape the islands. Wave action at the waterline undercuts the limestone, creating the characteristic notch that can be observed at the base of many islands — a horizontal groove worn by the mechanical action of waves and by the biological and chemical action of marine organisms. Above the notch, the cliffs overhang slightly, giving many islands a characteristic "mushroom" profile when viewed from the water. The sea also penetrates the islands through sea caves, passages, and grottos that form wherever the karst is hollow at water level, creating some of the bay's most spectacular interior spaces — vaulted chambers of dripping limestone, illuminated by shafts of light filtering through openings in the rock above.
The Bay's Geography and Extent
Ha Long Bay occupies the northeastern corner of the Gulf of Tonkin, the body of water bounded to the west by the Vietnamese coast and to the east by the Chinese island of Hainan. The bay's position at the intersection of the Vietnamese mainland and the open gulf gives it a complex coastal geography: to the north and east, the islands are larger and more widely spaced, with deeper water channels between them; to the south and west, approaching the mainland coast, the islands become smaller and more densely packed, and the channels shallower.
The 1,969 islands and islets of Ha Long Bay range enormously in size, from massive formations several kilometers across and hundreds of meters high to tiny rocky outcrops barely breaking the surface of the sea. The tallest points in the bay reach approximately 200 meters above sea level, with a number of islands supporting significant areas of vegetation and some of the best-developed limestone forest ecosystems in Vietnam. The majority of the islands rise steeply from the sea with little or no accessible beach area, their limestone faces dropping directly into the water in cliffs that may be undercut several meters at the waterline.
The water depth in Ha Long Bay varies considerably. Channels between islands may be only a few meters deep, while the main navigation channels used by larger vessels reach depths of ten to twenty meters. The bay's tidal range is modest — typically one to three meters — but tidal variation is important in determining access to certain caves and internal lagoons accessible only at low water. Water clarity varies seasonally and with proximity to the main tourist areas, where vessel traffic and waste discharge from cruise boats has historically reduced visibility significantly. In the outer bay and in the more remote sections of Bai Tu Long Bay, water clarity can be exceptional, allowing visibility to depths of several meters.
The broader Ha Long Bay region encompasses several distinct geographical sub-zones. The core zone of Ha Long Bay proper, inscribed by UNESCO, represents the densest concentration of islands and the most intensively visited area. Bai Tu Long Bay, to the northeast, has a similar geological character but receives far fewer visitors and retains more of its original tranquility and ecological character. The Cat Ba Archipelago, to the south, is dominated by Cat Ba Island — the largest island in the Gulf of Tonkin — and its surrounding smaller islands, and is the focus of a separate but closely related conservation effort. Together, these three zones form the Ha Long Bay-Cat Ba Archipelago system, recognized by UNESCO as a single interconnected natural property of outstanding universal value.
Human Prehistory: Eighteen Thousand Years of Habitation
Archaeological evidence has established that human beings have lived in and around Ha Long Bay for at least 18,000 years, making it one of the most enduringly inhabited coastal environments in mainland Southeast Asia. The earliest known culture in the bay area, the Soi Nhu culture, is dated to approximately 18,000 to 7,000 years before the present, a period during which sea levels were substantially lower than today and the bay's islands rose from a much broader coastal plain rather than directly from the sea. Archaeological sites from this period have been found on the islands themselves, demonstrating that human communities occupied elevated positions in what is now an island landscape when it was still part of the coastal mainland.
The subsequent Cai Beo culture, dated to approximately 7,000 to 5,000 years before the present, represents a significant adaptation to the rising sea. As sea levels approached their current positions following the end of the last ice age, the coastal communities of the Ha Long region developed increasingly maritime economies centered on fishing, shellfish gathering, and the exploitation of the rich intertidal and subtidal environments of the increasingly flooded karst landscape. The Cai Beo culture produced sophisticated stone tools, developed distinctive pottery traditions, and built the fishing and boat-handling skills that their descendants have continued to practice in the bay's floating villages into the twenty-first century.
The Ha Long culture, named directly for the bay and dated from approximately 3,500 years ago, represents the mature expression of the region's prehistoric maritime tradition. Ha Long culture sites — many of them shell middens representing centuries of accumulated shellfish consumption — are found throughout the bay's islands and on the mainland coast and have yielded artifacts including refined stone tools, ceramics with distinctive decorative styles, and evidence of the sophisticated fishing and maritime technologies that the inhabitants used to exploit the bay's abundant marine resources.
These prehistoric cultures were succeeded by the expansion of Vietnamese state formation into the northeastern coastal zone during the first millennium CE, and the region's population gradually became integrated into the broader Vietnamese cultural and political sphere. The indigenous maritime traditions were not lost in this integration, however: the fishing and boat-building skills of the Ha Long region's coastal communities have been transmitted continuously across the millennia, surviving into the present in the cultural practices of the bay's floating village communities.
The Battles of Bach Dang: Halong Bay as Military Fortress
The spectacular karst topography of Ha Long Bay and the adjacent Bach Dang River have played a decisive role in Vietnamese military history on at least two occasions that rank among the most important battles in the nation's long struggle against foreign conquest. The natural fortress qualities of the bay — its narrow channels, hidden coves, shallow waters, and the extraordinary maze of its island geography — have made it both a refuge for defenders and a death trap for invading fleets unfamiliar with its terrain.
In 938 CE, the Vietnamese general Ngo Quyen faced an invasion by the Southern Han dynasty of China, whose naval forces attempted to advance up the Bach Dang River — which flows into the sea just southwest of Ha Long Bay — to seize control of the Vietnamese heartland. Ngo Quyen's response was a masterpiece of tactical ingenuity and intimate geographical knowledge. He had his forces drive large wooden stakes, tipped with iron, into the bed of the Bach Dang River, positioning them just below the waterline at high tide so that they were invisible to the incoming fleet. As the tide receded, the advancing Chinese vessels — their hulls punctured and immobilized by the submerged stakes — became helplessly grounded. Ngo Quyen's warriors then attacked from all sides, destroying the fleet and killing the Chinese commander. The victory at Bach Dang in 938 ended the final Chinese occupation of Vietnam and opened the era of Vietnamese political independence that has continued, with interruptions, to the present day. The battle is celebrated as one of the defining moments in Vietnamese national history.
Three and a half centuries later, the same strategic genius was deployed again against a very different and even more formidable adversary. In 1285 and 1287, the forces of Kublai Khan — the Mongol emperor who had already conquered China, Korea, and vast portions of Asia and Europe — invaded Vietnam (then known as Dai Viet) in what was intended to be a swift conquest. The Mongols, whose tactical flexibility and military prowess had overwhelmed every opponent they had faced, found the Vietnamese terrain and the guerrilla tactics of the Tran dynasty generals a uniquely difficult challenge. After initially capturing the Vietnamese capital Thang Long (now Hanoi), the Mongol forces found themselves without supplies in an apparently empty city, their supply lines cut by Vietnamese guerrilla forces and their naval fleet vulnerable.
The Vietnamese general Tran Hung Dao, commanding the Vietnamese forces, employed the same stake-and-tide strategy that Ngo Quyen had used four centuries earlier. In April 1288, the Mongol fleet — attempting to withdraw down the Bach Dang River — sailed into the stake field at high tide, and as the tide receded, the fleet was impaled and destroyed. Tran Hung Dao's forces attacked the stranded vessels from both banks, and the Mongol naval force was annihilated. The Battle of Bach Dang of 1288 ended the Mongol threat to Vietnam definitively and remains, alongside the 938 battle, one of the most celebrated military victories in Vietnamese history. The cave known as Hang Dau Go — "Wooden Stakes Grotto" — in Ha Long Bay is traditionally said to have been the storage place where Tran Hung Dao's forces cached the wooden stakes before deploying them in the Bach Dang River, a tradition that gives the cave an important place in Vietnamese historical memory alongside its geological grandeur.
The Unesco World Heritage Inscriptions
UNESCO's decision to inscribe Ha Long Bay as a World Heritage Site in 1994 was made on the basis of criteria relating to the bay's outstanding natural beauty and aesthetic significance. The 1994 inscription covered an area of approximately 434 square kilometers encompassing the core zone of the bay and recognized that the landscape of Ha Long Bay represented a superlative natural phenomenon of exceptional beauty — a standard of global significance that placed it in the same category as the Grand Canyon, the Serengeti, and the Galapagos Islands.
In 2000, UNESCO expanded the inscribed property and added recognition under geological and geomorphological criteria, acknowledging that Ha Long Bay's karst tower landscape represented not merely a beautiful scene but a globally significant example of ongoing geological and geomorphological processes. The 2000 inscription recognized the bay as the world's finest example of marine-invaded tower karst — a geological phenomenon in which a karst landscape of towers and pinnacles has been partially submerged by the sea, creating the distinctive island-studded seascape that characterizes Ha Long Bay. This recognition placed the bay among the world's most important geological sites, valued not merely for what it looks like but for what it teaches us about the processes that shape the Earth's surface over geological time.
The most recent extension of the inscribed property came in 2023, when UNESCO recognized the Ha Long Bay-Cat Ba Archipelago as a unified World Heritage Site, acknowledging that the two previously separately recognized areas — Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago — form a single, interconnected ecological and geological unit whose combined significance exceeds the value of either component alone. The expanded inscription encompasses an area of approximately 65,650 hectares and includes both the core bay environment and the adjacent Cat Ba Island National Park, whose forests, mangroves, coral reefs, and endemic fauna make it one of the most biologically significant island ecosystems in the South China Sea.
The New Seven Wonders of Nature
In 2011, Ha Long Bay was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature in a global poll organized by the New7Wonders Foundation, joining a list of celebrated natural sites including the Amazon Rainforest, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, the Komodo National Park, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, and Table Mountain. The designation was made through a process of online and telephone voting by members of the public worldwide, and Vietnam's inclusion on the final list was greeted with enormous national pride. The New Seven Wonders designation is not an official scientific or governmental classification — it lacks the formal standing of UNESCO inscription — but it has had a substantial practical impact, dramatically increasing global awareness of Ha Long Bay and contributing to a surge in international tourist arrivals in the years following 2011.
The increased tourist numbers that flowed partly from this recognition intensified the environmental pressures that Vietnamese authorities and conservation organizations had already been tracking for years. The growth of the cruise industry on the bay — the primary vehicle through which most tourists experience the site — brought growing numbers of vessels, generating noise, waste, and water pollution in waters that had previously been among the relatively clean marine environments of Vietnam's northeastern coast. The challenge of managing rapidly growing tourism while preserving the values that make the bay worth visiting has become one of the central conservation challenges in Vietnam.
The Caves: Hidden Worlds Within the Stone
Among Ha Long Bay's most remarkable features are its caves — the interior spaces created within the karst islands by thousands of years of water percolation through the limestone, by wave action at the waterline, and by the dissolution of soluble rock along joints and fractures. The bay contains dozens of caves of varying size and accessibility, several of which are among the most spectacular natural caverns in mainland Southeast Asia.
Hang Dau Go, "Wooden Stakes Grotto," takes its name from the tradition associating it with the storage of wooden stakes before the 1288 Battle of Bach Dang River. It is one of the largest caves in Ha Long Bay, comprising three connected chambers of considerable size, with the innermost chamber reaching a height of approximately 25 meters. The cave's limestone walls and ceiling are encrusted with stalactites and stalagmites of extraordinary variety and beauty, their forms suggesting to the imagination an impossible menagerie of petrified creatures, architectural structures, and organic forms. French colonizers who visited the cave in the late nineteenth century named it "Grotte des Merveilles" — Cave of Wonders — a name that reflects the impression the site made on early European visitors.
Hang Sung Sot, "Cave of Surprises" or "Cave of Awe," is widely regarded as the most impressive cave in Ha Long Bay. Discovered in 1901 by a French geological expedition, the cave comprises three vast interconnected chambers, each revealing new wonders as visitors penetrate deeper into the mountain. The first chamber opens to a height of approximately 30 meters and contains formations of startling size and variety; the second and third chambers expand further, with the largest reaching dimensions of approximately 10,000 square meters of floor space, illuminated by natural light filtering through openings in the ceiling far above. The cave is home to large populations of bats and swiftlets, and the walls bear evidence of long human use, with graffiti from the colonial period alongside older inscriptions.
Hang Luon is a very different kind of cave experience: a tunnel cave accessible only by small boat or kayak at low tide, its entrance barely above sea level. Paddling through the dark tunnel of Hang Luon — its walls glistening with moisture, the sound of the paddles amplified and distorted by the enclosed space — emerges onto a hidden lagoon enclosed entirely by cliffs, open to the sky but invisible from the surrounding sea. These enclosed lagoons, known as "tidal lakes" or "flooded dolines," are among the most extraordinary and intimate landscapes of the bay, accessible only to those with the patience and capability to navigate through the narrow sea-level passages that lead to them.
Thien Cung Cave, "Heavenly Palace Cave," was discovered in 1993 and represents another large multi-chamber system, notable particularly for the exceptional density and variety of its speleothem formations — stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and cave curtains — which cover virtually every surface. The cave has become one of the most heavily visited sites in the bay and is dramatically lit with colored artificial lighting that has proved controversial among those who prefer to experience cave environments in more naturalistic conditions.
The caves of Ha Long Bay are not merely aesthetic attractions: they are important scientific resources as well. Paleontological and archaeological research in the caves has yielded evidence of past sea level changes recorded in the cave formations, of ancient human occupation in the form of stone tools and food debris in cave middens, and of the diverse fauna that has used the caves as habitat over thousands of years.
The Floating Villages: Life on the Water
Among the most distinctive human features of Ha Long Bay are its floating villages — communities of people who live their entire lives on the water, their houses built on rafts or pontoons anchored in sheltered corners of the bay, their livelihoods dependent on the sea around them. The floating villages of Ha Long Bay represent one of the oldest continuously inhabited maritime environments in Southeast Asia, and their inhabitants are the living descendants of the Ha Long culture people who first developed the bay's maritime economy thousands of years ago.
The floating village of Cua Van, located approximately 18 kilometers from Ha Long City, is the largest and best known of the bay's floating communities. With approximately 800 people living on around 200 houseboats, Cua Van is a genuine and functioning community rather than a tourist attraction: it has its own elementary school built on pontoons, a health clinic, and a social structure organized around fishing families who have occupied the same waterways for generations. The houses — built of wood and corrugated metal on floating platforms — cluster together in groups along the sheltered channels between the islands, their surroundings among the most dramatically beautiful in the bay. Fish farming cages float alongside the houses, tended by families whose principal livelihood comes from aquaculture as much as from wild fishing.
Ba Hang Village, Vung Vieng Village, and Cong Dam Village are the other principal floating communities in the core bay area. Together, these villages have historically housed approximately 1,600 to 4,000 people — the population estimate varies depending on the source and the time period — who are organized into fishing cooperatives and extended family networks that have maintained their distinctive water-based culture across many generations. Many families in these communities rarely go ashore, conducting virtually all aspects of daily life — cooking, sleeping, socializing, fishing, raising children — on the water.
The floating villages face a difficult future. Vietnamese authorities have periodically proposed or implemented relocations of floating village communities to shore-based housing, citing concerns about the children's access to education, the lack of basic services, and the environmental impact of untreated sewage and fishing waste on the bay's water quality. In 2014 and subsequent years, significant numbers of floating village residents were relocated to apartment buildings in Ha Long City. For many families, this relocation represented a profound disruption: generations of water-based culture and livelihood were displaced into an unfamiliar terrestrial environment, and some families struggled to adapt their fishing and aquaculture skills to the changed context of life on land. The remaining floating village communities have increasingly become cultural heritage sites as much as functioning communities, with a significant portion of their income derived from tourism.
Biodiversity of Halong Bay
The waters, islands, caves, and forests of Ha Long Bay support a remarkable diversity of plant and animal life, shaped by the bay's position at the intersection of tropical marine and island forest environments and by its complex micro-geography of channels, lagoons, caves, and littoral zones. The bay has been recognized as supporting approximately 500 species of mollusks, at least 200 species of fish, numerous reptile species including sea turtles and monitor lizards, and a rich avifauna of approximately 40 resident and migratory bird species.
The marine environment of Ha Long Bay includes coral reef habitats in the cleaner, clearer waters of the outer bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago, seagrass beds in shallow sandy areas, mangrove forests in sheltered embayments, and the distinctive biologically rich environment of the limestone island bases — the intertidal zone where waves and tides have created microhabitats of extraordinary productivity and diversity. The intertidal karst biome, dominated by barnacles, oysters, mussels, sea anemones, and the fish and crustaceans that depend on them, represents a highly specialized ecosystem adapted to the particular physical and chemical conditions of the limestone rock environment.
The island forests of Ha Long Bay — tropical limestone forests growing directly on the karst rock where thin soil accumulates in fissures and depressions — are among the most specialized and floristically distinctive plant communities in Vietnam, supporting approximately 14 endemic plant species found nowhere else on Earth. The flora of the limestone islands has adapted over millennia to the challenging conditions of karst terrain: shallow, rocky, often extremely dry and hot in surface conditions while underlain by water-saturated caves. The resulting plant communities are unusual in their species composition and structure, with a high proportion of shrubs and small trees adapted to periodic drought and low nutrient availability.
The Cat Ba Langur: a Species on the Edge
Among the most extraordinary and most endangered inhabitants of the Ha Long Bay region is the Cat Ba langur (Trachypithecus poliocephalus), a strikingly beautiful leaf-eating monkey found exclusively on Cat Ba Island. With its golden-orange head contrasting against a black body, the Cat Ba langur is one of the most visually distinctive primates in Asia — and one of the most desperately endangered. The species was listed on Fauna and Flora International's list of the 25 most endangered primates in the world, and the IUCN classifies it as Critically Endangered.
The Cat Ba langur's decline from an estimated historical population of 2,400 to 2,700 individuals to fewer than 200 in the 1990s, and to a low point of approximately 40 individuals in the early 2000s, is one of the most dramatic primate population collapses in Southeast Asia. The primary causes were hunting for traditional medicine and for sale to wildlife traders, combined with habitat disturbance from human settlement and deforestation on Cat Ba Island.
