   The Byzantine Empire

   The Byzantine Empire or Eastern Roman Empire was the eastern section of the Roman Empire, with its capital at Constantinople. The Byzantine Empire was called the Roman Empire or, in later centuries, Romania. Romania was made up of a number of small states, including Transylvania, Wallachia & Moldavia, each with an independent ruler.

   Russia and the Ottomans signed the treaty of San Stefano.

   Russia and the Ottomans signed the treaty of San Stefano, granting independence to Serbia. With the Treaty of San Stefano (and subsequent negotiations in Berlin) in the wake of the last Russo-Turkish War, the Ottoman Empire lost its possession of numerous territories including Bulgaria, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia.
