On the night of July 20, 1969, a human being stood on the surface of another world for the first time. Neil Armstrong's boot prints in the lunar dust remain there today, undisturbed. The Moon has no wind, no rain, nothing to erase them. In a sense they will outlast every monument humanity has ever built.
But the story of how we got there, and where we are going next, is far longer, stranger, and more contested than the triumphant Apollo narrative usually suggests. It is a story of Cold War rivalry, secret failures, extraordinary engineering, and a new generation of explorers from nations that did not even have space programs when Armstrong landed. It is also a story that is still being written.
The Space Race Begins (1957 to 1961)
The modern era of space exploration began on October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, into orbit. The shock to American confidence was profound. If the Soviets could put a satellite in orbit, the reasoning went, they could put a nuclear warhead anywhere on Earth. The Space Race had begun.
Both superpowers quickly turned their eyes to the Moon. The Soviets struck first. In January 1959, Luna 1 became the first spacecraft to escape Earth's gravity, though it missed the Moon and drifted into solar orbit. In September 1959, Luna 2 became the first spacecraft to reach the lunar surface, impacting near the Sea of Serenity. Shortly after, Luna 3 looped around the Moon and sent back humanity's first photographs of the far side, revealing a landscape startlingly different from the near side, with fewer dark plains, more craters, and more rugged terrain.
The United States struggled early. The Ranger program, designed to crash cameras onto the Moon while transmitting close-up photos, suffered six consecutive failures before Rangers 7, 8, and 9 succeeded in 1964 and 1965. The Surveyor program then achieved soft landings and confirmed the lunar surface was solid enough to support a human being. The Lunar Orbiter program mapped 99 percent of the lunar surface and identified potential Apollo landing sites.
The Soviet Crewed Lunar Program: the Secret Race
What the world did not fully know for decades was how seriously the Soviet Union was pursuing a crewed lunar landing. The program was cloaked in secrecy, failures were suppressed, and the program's existence was officially denied. Only after the Soviet Union collapsed did the full picture emerge.
The Soviet robotic program achieved a remarkable series of world firsts. Luna 9 in 1966 was the first spacecraft to achieve a soft landing on the Moon and transmit photographs from the surface. Luna 10 that same year was the first to orbit the Moon. Luna 16 in 1970 was the first robotic spacecraft to return samples to Earth. Lunokhod 1, also in 1970, was the first remote-controlled rover on another world, covering nearly 10 kilometers over 11 months. Luna 24 in 1976 was the last Soviet mission, returning samples that would not be matched until China's Chang'e 5 mission in 2020, a gap of 44 years.
The crewed effort centered on the N1 rocket, a massive booster comparable to NASA's Saturn V. The N1 used 30 first-stage engines clustered together, an arrangement that proved catastrophically difficult to manage. All four N1 test flights ended in failure. The second, in July 1969, caused one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history when the rocket fell back onto the launch complex and detonated. The program was quietly cancelled in 1974.
The Soviets also attempted a crewed lunar flyby using the Zond spacecraft. Zond 5 in 1968 flew tortoises and other biological specimens around the Moon and returned them safely to Earth. Had the program proceeded on schedule, Soviet cosmonauts might have orbited the Moon before Apollo 8. Repeated technical delays ultimately took that distinction away.
Apollo: Humanity's Greatest Journey
On May 25, 1961, just six weeks after Alan Shepard became the first American in space, President John F. Kennedy committed the United States to landing a man on the Moon before the end of the decade. It was an audacious promise. The technology required did not yet exist. What followed was the largest peacetime engineering mobilization in history. At its peak, the Apollo program employed 400,000 people and consumed 4 percent of the federal budget.
On January 27, 1967, a cabin fire during a launch rehearsal killed the three crew members of Apollo 1: Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. The fire spread with terrifying speed in the pure oxygen atmosphere inside the capsule. The disaster forced a complete capsule redesign and an 18-month pause in the program. It also shaped the culture of meticulous safety review that characterized Apollo's ultimate success.
Apollo 8, launched December 21, 1968, was the first crewed spacecraft to leave Earth orbit and travel to the Moon. Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and William Anders orbited the Moon ten times. On Christmas Eve, they broadcast a reading from Genesis to an estimated one billion people worldwide. Anders photographed the Earth rising above the lunar horizon in the image known as Earthrise, one of the most iconic photographs of the twentieth century.
Apollo 11 launched July 16, 1969. On July 20, the lunar module Eagle, piloted by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, descended toward the Sea of Tranquility. With 60 seconds of fuel remaining and the computer alarming with overload errors, Armstrong manually piloted the Eagle over a boulder field to a safe landing. "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." Armstrong descended the ladder and stepped onto the lunar surface at 10:56 p.m. Eastern time. He and Aldrin spent 2 hours and 31 minutes on the surface, collected 47.5 pounds of samples, and planted an American flag. Michael Collins orbited overhead in the command module throughout.
Apollo 12 in November 1969 achieved a precision landing near the Surveyor 3 probe. Apollo 13 in April 1970 suffered an oxygen tank explosion that crippled the service module. The crew used the lunar module as a lifeboat and returned safely in what NASA called its finest hour. Apollo 14 in February 1971 saw Alan Shepard hit two golf balls on the lunar surface. Apollo 15 in July 1971 was the first to use the Lunar Roving Vehicle, a battery-powered car that allowed astronauts to cover far greater distances. Apollo 16 in April 1972 landed in the lunar highlands and collected 211 pounds of samples. Apollo 17 in December 1972 was the final mission, carrying geologist Harrison Schmitt, the only professional scientist to walk on the Moon. Eugene Cernan was the last human being to stand on the lunar surface, departing on December 14, 1972. No human has returned since.
The Long Pause and the Return of Robots (1976 to 2019)
After Apollo 17, both superpowers turned their attention elsewhere. The Space Shuttle era focused human spaceflight on low Earth orbit, and the Moon was largely left to robotic visitors.
Japan's Selene spacecraft, also known as Kaguya, launched in 2007 and produced detailed mapping of the lunar surface including high-definition video. China's Chang'e 1, also in 2007, was China's first lunar mission, an orbiter that eventually impacted the surface intentionally. India's Chandrayaan-1, launched in 2008, made a remarkable discovery: it detected water ice in permanently shadowed craters near the lunar poles, a finding with profound implications for future human habitation.
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, launched in 2009, has produced the most detailed maps of the Moon ever made. A companion mission, LCROSS, deliberately crashed into a permanently shadowed polar crater and confirmed the presence of water ice in the debris plume.
China's Chang'e Program: the New Superpower in Space
China's lunar program has become one of the most impressive in the modern era. Chang'e 3 in 2013 was China's first soft landing on the Moon, deploying the Yutu rover. Chang'e 4 in 2019 achieved the first landing on the far side of the Moon, a historic first requiring a relay satellite to maintain communications with Earth. The Yutu-2 rover continues to operate, making it the longest-operating lunar rover in history. Chang'e 5 in 2020 returned 1.73 kilograms of lunar samples to Earth, the first sample return since the Soviet Luna 24 mission in 1976. Chang'e 6 in 2024 achieved the world's first sample return from the lunar far side, bringing back material from the South Pole-Aitken Basin, one of the solar system's oldest and largest impact craters.
India's Historic South Pole Landing
On August 23, 2023, India's Chandrayaan-3 mission successfully soft-landed near the Moon's south pole. India became only the fourth country to successfully soft-land on the Moon and the first to land near the south pole. The landing came just days after Russia's Luna-25, attempting the same feat, crashed. The Pragyan rover operated for approximately two weeks before lunar night ended its mission. The south pole is a region of intense interest because of its confirmed water ice deposits.
Japan's Slim Precision Lander
In January 2024, Japan's SLIM lander, short for Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, achieved a successful soft landing with unprecedented precision, touching down within 55 meters of its intended target. The lander came to rest on its side due to a thruster anomaly but still returned science data, demonstrating that precision landing technology is now within reach.
Artemis: the Return of Humans to the Moon
NASA's Artemis program represents the first effort to return humans to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. Unlike Apollo's flags-and-footprints approach, Artemis is aimed at establishing a sustained human presence on and around the Moon.
Artemis 1, launched in November 2022, was an uncrewed test of the Space Launch System rocket and the Orion capsule. The mission traveled beyond the Moon, reaching a distance of 268,563 miles from Earth, the farthest any spacecraft designed for humans has ever traveled, before returning and splashing down in the Pacific in December 2022.
Artemis 2, launched April 1, 2026, is the first crewed Artemis mission and the first time human beings have traveled to the vicinity of the Moon since 1972. The four-person crew consists of Reid Wiseman as commander, Victor Glover as pilot (the first person of color to travel to the Moon), Christina Koch as mission specialist (the first woman to travel to the Moon), and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen (the first non-American to travel to the Moon). The mission is a crewed flyby using a free-return trajectory around the Moon, designed to test Orion's life support systems and crew operations in the deep-space environment. The crew will fly approximately 6,400 miles beyond the far side of the Moon during closest approach. Total mission duration is approximately 10 days.
Artemis 3, planned to follow, aims to land astronauts on the lunar south pole for the first time, with SpaceX's Starship serving as the Human Landing System. Beyond that, NASA envisions the Lunar Gateway, a small space station in lunar orbit, and eventually a permanent surface base near the south pole where water ice could be converted into rocket propellant and drinking water.
