Key Concepts
Our solar system consists of one star, eight planets, at least five officially recognized dwarf planets, hundreds of moons, and countless smaller bodies. The planets divide cleanly into two groups. The four inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) are small, rocky, dense, and close to the Sun. The four outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) are gas or ice giants, far larger than Earth and far from the Sun. Between Mars and Jupiter sits the asteroid belt; beyond Neptune lies the Kuiper Belt, where Pluto was demoted in 2006.
Earth's habitability is the result of several uncommon coincidences. It sits in the habitable zone where liquid water can exist on the surface. Plate tectonics continually recycle the crust and regulate atmospheric carbon. A liquid iron core generates a magnetic field that shields the surface from solar radiation. Photosynthetic life has built and now maintains an oxygen-rich atmosphere. The Moon stabilizes Earth's axial tilt, smoothing out climate over millions of years.
Today space is also a political and economic domain. More than 70 countries operate national space agencies. NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), CNSA (China), the European Space Agency (a multinational European body), ISRO (India), JAXA (Japan), and the UAE Space Agency lead in mission complexity. Each operates satellites that touch daily life on Earth: weather forecasting, GPS-style navigation, communications, intelligence, and scientific research.
The legal framework is the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, signed by more than 110 nations. It declares space "the province of all mankind," prohibits weapons of mass destruction in orbit, and bars any country from claiming sovereignty over the Moon, planets, or asteroids. Recent developments — SpaceX, the Artemis Accords, China's Tiangong space station, planned commercial Moon mining — are pushing the limits of what the 60-year-old treaty was designed to handle.
