Introduction

Of the world's earliest and greatest civilizations, none is more enigmatic, more sophisticated, and more persistently mysterious than the Indus Valley Civilization. Known also as the Harappan Civilization after Harappa, the first of its great cities to be excavated in modern times, this Bronze Age culture flourished in the river valleys and coastal lowlands of what is now Pakistan, northwestern India, and eastern Afghanistan for well over a thousand years. At its height, roughly between 2600 and 1900 BC, it was the largest civilization on earth by geographic extent, sprawling across approximately 1.3 million square kilometers and encompassing more cities and towns than ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia combined. It built planned urban centers with straight streets, multilevel buildings, indoor plumbing, and public drainage systems that would not be surpassed anywhere in the world for thousands of years. Its merchants sent goods to the Persian Gulf, to Mesopotamia, and perhaps beyond. Its craftsmen worked in copper, bronze, gold, ivory, shell, and precious stone with extraordinary skill. Its people developed a writing system that remains, after nearly a century of determined scholarly effort, completely undeciphered.

And yet, despite all of this, the Indus Valley Civilization remains the least understood of the three great civilizations of the ancient world. We know the names of the pharaohs of Egypt. We have read the business contracts and love songs of ancient Sumer. We can trace the rise and fall of Mesopotamian empires across millennia of written records. But the people of the Indus Valley have left us their cities, their artifacts, and their seals inscribed with a mysterious script, and nothing more. We do not know what they called themselves, what language they spoke, what gods they worshipped, who governed them, or why, after more than a thousand years of remarkable stability, their civilization dissolved and was forgotten so thoroughly that even their brick-built cities were quarried for railroad ballast in the nineteenth century before anyone understood what they were.

This article traces the full arc of the Indus Valley Civilization: its discovery and rediscovery, its geography and cities, its extraordinary urban planning and technology, its economy and trade networks, its art and religion, the enduring mystery of its script, the debate over its social and political organization, the theories surrounding its decline, and the questions about its legacy in the cultures of South Asia that came after it.

The Rediscovery of a Lost World

The story of the Indus Valley Civilization's rediscovery is one of the more extraordinary accidents in the history of archaeology. For more than three thousand years, the cities of the Harappan world lay buried under silt and sand, unknown even to the people who lived nearby. Ancient Indian texts, including the Vedas and later epics, make no clear reference to these cities. Medieval travelers passed through the region without any knowledge of what lay beneath their feet. The landscape gave nothing away.

The first hint came not from scholars but from laborers. In the 1850s, British engineers engaged in the construction of the East Indian Railway, which would run between Karachi and Lahore, were in need of ballast for the tracks. Local contractors discovered an almost inexhaustible supply of baked bricks near a mound that locals called Harappa, in what is now Pakistan's Punjab province. These bricks were ancient, thousands of years old, yet they were so well fired and so precisely made that they were still structurally sound. By some estimates, tens of millions of these Harappan bricks were used as railway ballast between the 1850s and the 1870s. In doing so, the railway builders unknowingly quarried and destroyed a substantial portion of one of the world's most important archaeological sites, grinding three-thousand-year-old urban infrastructure into rubble beneath the rails of empire.

A British military engineer named Alexander Cunningham visited Harappa in 1853 and again in 1873. He found and recorded a seal bearing an inscription he did not recognize, and noted the unusual nature of the site, but he did not grasp its significance. Cunningham later became the first director-general of the newly established Archaeological Survey of India, but even under his leadership, the true nature of Harappa remained unappreciated.

It was not until the early twentieth century that the picture began to change. In 1912, a British archaeologist named J. Fleet drew attention to the Harappan seals. In 1920 and 1921, excavations at both Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, a site in modern Sindh province, roughly six hundred kilometers from Harappa, began in earnest under the direction of two archaeologists: Daya Ram Sahni at Harappa and Rakhal Das Banerji at Mohenjo-daro. Both men worked under the oversight of Sir John Marshall, the director-general of the Archaeological Survey of India from 1902 to 1928. In 1924, Marshall announced to the world in the Illustrated London News that two great, hitherto unknown prehistoric cities had been found. The announcement was a sensation. What had emerged was nothing less than a third ancient civilization, one that was at least as old as ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, and in some respects more sophisticated.

The name Indus Valley Civilization was adopted because both Harappa and Mohenjo-daro were located near or in the Indus River system, which the civilization clearly depended upon. The alternate name, Harappan Civilization, honors the city where the modern rediscovery began. Both names remain in use today.

Geography and Extent

The Indus Valley Civilization at its greatest extent was the largest of the three early Bronze Age civilizations in area. While ancient Egypt was confined primarily to the Nile Valley and Mesopotamia to the land between the Tigris and Euphrates, the Harappan world stretched from the highlands of Balochistan in the west to the Gangetic Plain in the east, and from the foothills of the Himalayas in the north to the Gujarat coast in the south. This is a territory that spans parts of modern Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.

At the heart of this world was the Indus River system, one of the great river systems of Asia, which provided water for agriculture, transport, and trade. But the Harappan civilization was not solely an Indus Valley culture. A large portion of its sites, including some of the largest, lay along the course of the ancient Saraswati River, known in the Rigveda as a mighty river that once flowed parallel to the Indus before drying up. The drying of the Saraswati, now identified with the seasonal Ghaggar-Hakra river system, is believed by many scholars to have been one of the major environmental stressors that contributed to the civilization's eventual decline. So significant is the Saraswati connection that some Indian scholars have proposed renaming the civilization the Indus-Saraswati Civilization.

Archaeologists have so far identified approximately 1,500 sites belonging to the Harappan cultural tradition, ranging from small agricultural villages to large urban centers. Of these, only a fraction, perhaps 100 to 150 sites, have been excavated in any systematic way. The total settled area of the civilization, if all identified sites are taken together, is staggering. Most experts now classify the sites by size: large cities (greater than 100 hectares), smaller cities (25 to 100 hectares), towns, and villages. The largest cities are a handful of sites that clearly served as major urban centers.

The Great Cities

The most famous city of the Indus Valley Civilization is Mohenjo-daro, located in modern Sindh province of Pakistan, in the lower Indus Valley. The name Mohenjo-daro is a Sindhi phrase meaning, roughly, Mound of the Dead, a name given by local people to the site without any understanding of its true nature. At its height, the city may have had a population of between 40,000 and 80,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in the ancient world. The city is estimated to have covered an area of about 250 hectares, though much of it remains unexcavated, and portions have been lost to flooding and erosion over the millennia. The city was built and rebuilt at least nine times, each new phase constructed directly on top of the ruins of the previous one. The lowest levels, which presumably date to the earliest phases of construction, remain largely inaccessible because they lie below the current water table.

Mohenjo-daro was divided into at least two major areas: a raised western mound, sometimes called the Citadel, and a larger lower city to the east. The Citadel appears to have housed the most significant public buildings, including the Great Bath, the Great Granary, and a large assembly hall. The lower city was the main residential and commercial district.

Harappa, the second great city, lies in Punjab province, roughly six hundred kilometers northeast of Mohenjo-daro. It was probably somewhat smaller, though its upper levels were so thoroughly destroyed by the railway construction of the nineteenth century that accurate estimates are difficult. Like Mohenjo-daro, it featured a raised citadel area and a lower city, and it shared the same extraordinary quality of urban planning and construction.

Dholavira, in the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, India, is one of the best preserved and most thoroughly planned of the Harappan cities. It has been particularly remarkable for its elaborate water management infrastructure. Archaeologists have uncovered 16 large reservoirs carved into the bedrock, connected by a sophisticated system of drains and channels designed to capture monsoon rainfall and store it for year-round use in what is a very arid region. Dholavira also stands out for a unique signboard, a large inscription consisting of ten large Harappan signs displayed in what appears to be a public space near the main gate of the city, possibly a civic announcement or the name of the city. It is the largest Harappan inscription discovered to date.

Rakhigarhi, in Haryana, India, is now recognized as the largest known Harappan site, covering approximately 350 hectares. Its full extent and significance have only become clear through recent excavations and remote sensing surveys. Rakhigarhi has also been the source of ancient DNA studies that have shed light on the genetic relationships between Harappan people and modern South Asian populations.

Lothal, in Gujarat, India, was a carefully planned port city and trading center. It possessed a large rectangular structure, approximately 37 by 22 meters, that archaeologists have interpreted as a tidal dock, one of the earliest known artificial docks in the world, allowing ships to float in and out with the tides. Whether this interpretation is correct remains debated, but the structure is clearly engineered and represents sophisticated planning. Lothal was clearly a hub for trade by sea, with connections to the Persian Gulf and Mesopotamia.

Urban Planning and Architecture: an Ancient Masterpiece

Perhaps the most striking feature of the Harappan civilization, and the one that has most astonished archaeologists since the cities were first excavated, is the extraordinary sophistication of its urban planning. These were not cities that grew organically over centuries, expanding in haphazard fashion as population increased and new neighborhoods were added. They appear, instead, to have been planned communities, laid out in advance on a regular grid and built according to consistent standards, and then maintained and rebuilt according to those same standards across many generations.

The streets of Mohenjo-daro and Harappa run in straight lines aligned to the cardinal directions, north to south and east to west. Major streets could be as wide as ten meters, forming a grid that divided the city into large rectangular blocks. Within each block, smaller lanes branched off to give access to individual houses and courtyards. The overall impression is of a city that would not look entirely out of place in a modern discussion of urban design, except that it was built four thousand years ago.

Houses were constructed of fired brick, standardized to a ratio of 1:2:4 in their dimensions. This ratio, meaning the brick's width is twice its thickness and its length is twice its width, is the same basic ratio used in structural bricks around the world today. It is an optimal ratio for interlocking strength, and the Harappans appear to have arrived at it independently. The bricks were so well fired that many have survived for four thousand years in a structurally sound condition, as the British railway engineers discovered to their profit.

Houses ranged from modest single-room structures to multi-room complexes of considerable size. Many had interior courtyards. The largest had two stories. What is particularly notable is that virtually every house, large or small, was connected to the city's drainage system, one of the most advanced features of Harappan urban planning.

The Harappans built covered brick drains running beneath the main streets, into which wastewater from individual houses flowed through smaller covered channels. Manholes at regular intervals allowed the drains to be inspected and cleaned. This was not simply an open sewer running along the edge of the street, as in many ancient and even medieval cities; it was a fully engineered underground drainage network, with each house individually connected to the system. Waste and used water from toilets, bathing areas, and kitchens was channeled away from the living spaces into the main drains and then presumably out of the city into nearby fields or rivers. For comparison, ancient Rome, celebrated for its engineering, did not build a comparable underground sewer system until the sixth century BC, more than two thousand years after the Harappans had perfected theirs. Many European cities had less sophisticated drainage well into the nineteenth century.

The Great Bath

Among all the individual structures of Mohenjo-daro, the most famous is the Great Bath. Located on the Citadel mound, it is a large, carefully constructed water tank measuring approximately 12 meters long, 7 meters wide, and 2.4 meters deep. It was built with great precision. The floor and sides were constructed of fired bricks laid in gypsum mortar, and the whole structure was then covered with a layer of natural tar, or bitumen, to make it watertight. At either end of the pool, wide staircases of brick led down into the water. The tank could be filled and drained through large drains built into the structure.

Around the pool, there appears to have been a series of small rooms or changing areas, and a large well nearby provided fresh water. The entire complex was enclosed by a structure of some kind, though archaeologists debate whether this was a covered hall or an open courtyard.

The Great Bath is widely considered to be the earliest known public water tank in the world. Its precise construction and its prominent location on the Citadel have led most scholars to conclude that it served a ritual function, perhaps for ceremonial bathing or purification rites. If so, it would represent the earliest known evidence of the ritual bathing practices that have been central to South Asian religious life for thousands of years and remain important in Hinduism today, where ritual bathing in sacred rivers and tanks is a fundamental act of religious observance. Whether the Harappans were the originators of this tradition or whether they shared it with cultures that eventually evolved into the Hindu tradition is one of the many questions that cannot be answered without the ability to read the Harappan script.

Standardization and Administration

One of the most remarkable features of the Harappan civilization, and one that has few parallels in the ancient world, is the extraordinary degree of standardization that prevailed across its enormous geographic extent. Identical bricks, using the same 1:2:4 ratio, have been found at sites ranging from Afghanistan in the northwest to Gujarat in the southeast, a distance of well over a thousand kilometers. The same basic urban planning principles, the same grid layouts, the same drainage conventions, appear at sites across this vast area.

Even more striking is the standardization of weights and measures. Harappan weights, made of chert, a fine-grained rock, and sometimes of other materials, have been found in remarkably consistent values across the entire civilization. They follow a binary system: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and also ratios of 10, 100, and 200. The smallest weights correspond closely to a unit of approximately 0.85 grams. A set of weights from a site in Afghanistan and a set from a site in Gujarat, more than a thousand kilometers apart, correspond to the same standard. This implies some central authority, or at least a very effective mechanism for maintaining standards, operating across the entire civilization.

The same standardization appears in measuring rods. A divided ruler made of ivory found at Lothal uses a unit of approximately 1.7 millimeters with remarkable precision. An ivory rod found at Mohenjo-daro suggests a unit of about 3.4 centimeters, which corresponds to what is called a digit in ancient Near Eastern measurement. The consistency of these units across the civilization implies that weights and measures were not simply local conventions but were enforced or at least maintained civilization-wide, suggesting a degree of administrative and commercial integration that is genuinely impressive.

How this was achieved without a known central palace, without what archaeologists recognize as temples of the Mesopotamian type, and without the kind of warrior-king iconography so common in Egypt and Mesopotamia, remains one of the deepest puzzles the civilization poses.

The Harappan Economy and Trade

The Harappan civilization was above all a commercial civilization. Its cities were built around commerce, and the evidence of long-distance trade is found in the archaeological record from earliest to latest phases of Harappan history.

Trade goods moved within the civilization across enormous distances. Carnelian beads, one of the most characteristic products of Harappan craftsmen, have been found not only across the Harappan world but at Mesopotamian sites including Ur and Akkad, more than two thousand kilometers away. Shell bangles made from the shell of the Turbinella pyrum, a large sea snail found only in the Indian Ocean, have been found at sites deep in the interior of the subcontinent, indicating trade between the coast and the interior. Lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, jade from China, copper from Oman and from sites in India, gold from Karnataka, timber from the forests of the Himalayas: all of these materials found their way to Harappan cities, where craftsmen worked them into finished goods that were traded onwards.

The most dramatic evidence of long-distance trade is the presence of Harappan seals and seal impressions at Mesopotamian sites. Seals or their impressions bearing the distinctive Harappan style have been found at Ur, at Tell Asmar, and at other sites in ancient Sumer and Akkad. Mesopotamian texts refer to a land called Meluhha as a major trading partner, and most scholars now believe that Meluhha was the Harappan world. The texts describe trade in copper, carnelian, gold, ivory, and timber. They also mention that Meluhhan traders lived in Mesopotamian cities, indicating that the trade relationship was not merely occasional but sustained and organized.

The Harappan port at Lothal appears to have been one of the major nodes in this trade network. The docking facility there, whatever its precise function, suggests that ocean-going vessels were part of the Harappan commercial system. Harappan artifacts have also been found on the island of Bahrain, which served as a commercial entrepot in the ancient Gulf trade, and at sites on the coast of Oman.

The Harappan Script: History's Most Famous Unsolved Puzzle

Of all the mysteries the Indus Valley Civilization has bequeathed to us, none is more tantalizing and none has frustrated more brilliant minds than the question of its writing system. The Harappan script is known from approximately 4,000 objects, most of them small square seals carved from steatite (soapstone) and fired to a hard, white finish. The seals typically bear a short inscription, usually of between four and ten signs, above an animal image. The animal images are striking and varied: a short-horned bull, a tiger, an elephant, a rhinoceros, a crocodile, a buffalo. But by far the most common animal image is a creature that has come to be called the unicorn: a bovine animal, perhaps a bull shown in profile, with a single horn projecting from its forehead. No such animal exists in nature, and the meaning of this repeated image remains unknown.

The script has been found not only on seals but also on clay tablets and tags, copper tools, pottery, shell, ivory, and bone. The script appears in what is clearly writing direction, running from right to left. Texts are almost always short; no inscription longer than about 26 signs has been found, and most are considerably shorter. This brevity has made decipherment extremely difficult, because the usual tools of code-breaking, finding repeated words, identifying grammar patterns, correlating inscriptions with images, require longer texts to work with.

Scholars have identified approximately 400 to 700 distinct signs in the Harappan script, depending on how signs are grouped and how variations are counted. This number places the script somewhere between a purely syllabic writing system, which might be expected to have 50 to 100 signs, and a pure logographic system like early Chinese, which has many more. The most probable interpretation is that the Harappan script is a logo-syllabic system, one that uses a combination of signs representing words and signs representing syllables or sounds, similar to the early writing of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

The fundamental obstacle to decipherment is the lack of a bilingual text, a document written in Harappan and some other language that has already been deciphered, like the Rosetta Stone that unlocked ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. No such bilingual text has been found. Without it, decipherment requires making assumptions about what language the script records, and those assumptions are deeply contested.

Most scholars believe the Harappan script represents an early form of a Dravidian language, the language family that includes Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, which are spoken today primarily in southern India and Sri Lanka. This view is supported by the geographic continuity between areas where Harappan civilization existed and areas where Dravidian languages survive or were historically attested in the north of the Indian subcontinent. But a significant minority of scholars argue for an Indo-Aryan language, an early form of Sanskrit, for an entirely different language family like Munda, or even for a language with no surviving relatives. Without decipherment, none of these positions can be confirmed.

Several serious claims of decipherment have been made over the decades, but none has won broad scholarly acceptance. The Finnish scholar Asko Parpola has devoted much of his career to the Harappan script and has made significant progress in identifying patterns and possible meanings, particularly through comparison with Dravidian languages, but his work remains a set of well-argued hypotheses rather than a proven decipherment. The script continues to resist all efforts.

The implications of this failure extend far beyond academic interest. The Harappan script is the only surviving record of what the Harappan people thought was important enough to write down. Without the ability to read it, we are denied access to their religion, their mythology, their history, their commerce, their governance, and their literature, if they had any of these in written form. We are left with the physical evidence of their cities, their art, their tools, and their seals, and our interpretations of these things must always remain provisional.

Harappan Society: the Puzzle of the Egalitarian City

One of the most persistent and intriguing questions about the Harappan civilization concerns its social and political organization. In this respect, the Harappan world is strikingly different from the other great civilizations of the ancient world, and the difference has led to a great deal of scholarly speculation.

In ancient Egypt, the evidence of social hierarchy and centralized power is overwhelming. Massive royal tombs, temple complexes built to glorify divine kings, inscriptions listing the achievements of pharaohs, images of rulers receiving the submission of enemies: all of this makes the structure of Egyptian society unmistakable. In Mesopotamia, royal palaces, temple precincts dedicated to specific named deities, records of taxation and tribute, lists of kings and their conquests: again, the evidence of hierarchical, state-organized society is abundant.

But in the Harappan cities, archaeologists have found none of these things, or at least no clear equivalents. There are no obvious royal palaces. There are no large temples of the kind that dominated Mesopotamian cities. There are virtually no depictions of rulers, no scenes of military conquest, no records of warfare or tribute. Weapons have been found, particularly arrowheads, but no large-scale weapons caches, no fortifications designed for military defense, no evidence of a warrior class or a professional army.

The building that is most commonly called the citadel in Harappan cities is a raised platform, but what stood on it was not a palace or a temple in any recognizable sense. At Mohenjo-daro, the structures on the Citadel mound include the Great Bath, a large building that may have served as a granary or warehouse, and an assembly hall with multiple rooms. These suggest public functions, collective activities, but not the private luxury of royalty or the focused worship of specific gods with priests and sacrifices.

The housing stock of Harappan cities, too, is more uniform than that of Mesopotamian cities. While there are larger and smaller houses, the differences are not extreme, and even relatively modest houses were connected to the drainage system, suggesting that the basic urban infrastructure was available to the entire population rather than being confined to an elite. There are wealthy houses and simpler ones, but the gap between them is not as dramatic as in many contemporary societies.

From this evidence, some scholars have argued that Harappan society was unusually egalitarian, perhaps governed by a council of merchants or elders rather than by kings, or perhaps by religious authorities whose power left no monumental trace. Others argue that the evidence for egalitarianism is overstated, that the large granary-like structures imply redistributive economic control by some elite, and that the absence of palaces and royal tombs may reflect different cultural preferences rather than the absence of hierarchy. The archaeological record is consistent with several different interpretations, and without the ability to read the script, there is no way to resolve the debate.

What can be said with confidence is that the Harappan world maintained a degree of cultural and commercial unity across an enormous area for more than a millennium, and that this unity was achieved and sustained without the kind of coercive military power that characterized many ancient empires. Whether this reflects a remarkably peaceful and cooperative society or simply different mechanisms of social control is a question that continues to fascinate historians.

Harappan Art and Material Culture

The material culture of the Indus Valley Civilization reveals a people of considerable artistic sophistication, practical ingenuity, and aesthetic refinement. Their art and craft production encompassed a remarkable range of materials and techniques, from small carved seals to large terracotta figurines, from delicate gold jewelry to heavy copper tools, and the quality of the finest Harappan work stands comparison with the best of any ancient civilization.

The most numerous and culturally significant of all Harappan artifacts are the seals. These small, flat objects, usually square and typically between two and five centimeters on a side, were carved from steatite, a soft stone that was then fired to harden it and give it a lustrous white finish. Most seals have a boss, or raised knob, on the back with a hole drilled through it, suggesting they were worn or carried. The front face bears a carved image, almost always an animal, and above the image, a short inscription in the Harappan script.

The animal carvings on the seals are among the finest examples of miniature art from the ancient world. The engravers captured their subjects with a naturalistic precision and economy of line that modern artists have admired. The short-horned bull, shown in a three-quarter view with its massive dewlap and carefully articulated musculature, is a masterpiece of small-scale sculpture. The tiger, the elephant, the rhinoceros, the crocodile: all are rendered with a confidence and fluency that speaks to craftsmen who had studied their subjects closely and who possessed the technical skills to translate observation into stone.

The unicorn seal, showing the single-horned bovine animal, is the most common motif by far, occurring on perhaps sixty percent of all Harappan seals. In front of the animal there is almost always a small device that has variously been interpreted as a manger, a feeding trough, a ritual object, or an incense burner. The repeated combination of the unicorn and this object across thousands of seals over hundreds of years suggests that both elements were deeply significant within Harappan culture, but their meaning remains unknown.

Among the most celebrated individual artifacts from the Harappan world are two small sculptures from Mohenjo-daro that have become virtually iconic: the Dancing Girl and the Priest-King.

The Dancing Girl is a small bronze figurine, just under eleven centimeters tall, depicting a young woman in a confident, relaxed pose: her right hand resting on her hip, her left arm extended downward with her fingers curved, her head tilted slightly. She is nude except for a necklace and a series of bangles running nearly to the shoulder on her left arm. Her hair is arranged in a loose bun. She looks directly ahead with an expression of calm self-possession. The figurine was made using the lost-wax casting technique, in which a wax model is encased in clay, fired so that the wax melts away, and then filled with molten metal. This technique requires considerable skill and experience. The figurine's nickname, the Dancing Girl, was given by archaeologists, and it is not certain that she was actually a dancer; she may represent any number of things, from a performer to a deity to an everyday young woman. The exact content of that religious life, however, remains inaccessible.

The process was gradual rather than sudden, and it appears to have varied by region. The first signs of stress appear around 1900 BC, when the great urban centers of the western Indus Valley, including Mohenjo-daro, began to show signs of decay. The careful maintenance of buildings and drains that characterized the mature phase gave way to more careless construction. The water harvesting and storage systems of Dholavira demonstrate sophisticated environmental engineering in a region where water was scarce.

The civilization's commercial networks, linking the Indus Valley to Mesopotamia, the Persian Gulf, Central Asia, and the Indian Ocean, helped to create some of the earliest known long-distance trading systems, foreshadowing the later Silk Road and Indian Ocean trade networks that would become the arteries of the ancient and medieval world.

And yet it is the mystery, more than any specific achievement, that makes the Indus Valley Civilization so compelling. The undeciphered script, the unanswered questions about governance and religion, the unexplained decline: these gaps in our knowledge are not signs of the civilization's insignificance but rather evidence of how much remains to be discovered. The Harappan world was relatively well supplied with most raw materials, but it lacked tin, which was essential for making bronze, and the source of the tin used in Harappan bronzes is not certainly known.

The external connections of the Indus Valley Civilization declined and then ceased sometime around 1800 to 1700 BC, roughly coinciding with the decline of Mesopotamian trade networks more generally during this period. The disruption of these trade connections would have had significant economic consequences for the Harappan commercial cities, whose prosperity depended in part on long-distance trade.

Continuing Mysteries and Future Research

Despite more than a century of archaeology and the application of increasingly sophisticated scientific methods, the Indus Valley Civilization retains a remarkable capacity to surprise and to baffle. New discoveries continue to change our picture of the civilization, and fundamental questions remain open.

The decipherment of the Harappan script remains the holy grail of South Asian archaeology. The absence of clear palatial or temple architecture, and the absence of royal iconography, set the Harappan world apart from every other complex society of comparable scale in the ancient world, and the explanation for this difference continues to be debated.

The relationship between the Harappan civilization and the cultures that came after it in South Asia, both the Indo-Aryan-speaking cultures of the Vedic period and the Dravidian cultures of southern India, is still imperfectly understood. The hypothesis of cultural continuity, which sees significant elements of later South Asian culture as direct descendants of Harappan traditions, has powerful advocates and is supported by suggestive evidence, but it cannot be proven without the ability to read the script. Genetic evidence is helping to clarify the population history, but genetic continuity does not necessarily imply cultural continuity, and the relationship between the two is always complex.

New sites continue to be discovered. The vast majority of Harappan sites have never been excavated, and many have not even been properly surveyed.
