- Namibia’s climate is typical of a semi-desert and high plateau country, with hot days and cool nights. In mid-summer (December–February), daytime temperatures can exceed 100°F in lower elevations. In Windhoek, January average high temperatures are in the 90s. Winter (May–September) sees daytime highs of about 70°F; nights can be cold, dipping below freezing. Windhoek enjoys about 300 sunny days a year. Rains usually come from December through March, peaking in February, for a yearly average rainfall of 12–16 inches in Windhoek. The unrelenting dryness of the rest of the year makes the rains refreshing, welcome, and eagerly anticipated, turning the mountains surrounding Windhoek green for the brief summer months.

Etosha National Park
Etosha is one of the great wildlife destinations of the African continent, but it operates on different principles from the more famous parks of East Africa, and visitors who approach it with expectations shaped by Maasai Mara or Serengeti may need to recalibrate their mental models before they fully appreciate what Etosha offers.
The defining feature of Etosha is its pan, a vast saline depression of approximately 4,800 square kilometers that appears on satellite images as a brilliant white expanse surrounded by darker savanna. The pan was formed from a shallow lake that existed until approximately twelve thousand years ago, when tectonic activity diverted the Kunene River northward to its present course, cutting off the water supply and allowing evaporation to concentrate the mineral content of the remaining water. What remains is a combination of salt, clay, and mineral deposits that supports virtually no vegetation and presents an almost lunar surface during the dry season.
In good rainfall years, the pan fills with shallow water and becomes a temporary lake that attracts enormous flocks of flamingos, pelicans, and other waterbirds in numbers that are staggering. The pink haze of tens of thousands of flamingos assembled on the flooded pan is one of the great natural spectacles of southern Africa, visible from kilometers away and audible as a continuous distant murmur. In drought years, the pan may remain dry throughout the rainy season and the flamingos will not appear, a reminder that Namibian wildlife experiences are always contingent on rainfall patterns.
The strategic value of Etosha for wildlife viewing lies in the waterholes distributed around the pan's perimeter. During the dry season, from May through October, the surrounding savanna dries out and surface water becomes scarce throughout the park. Animals have no alternative but to visit the permanent springs and artificial waterholes that dot the park boundary, and they do so in numbers and combinations that create experiences available nowhere else in Africa. At a single waterhole, over the course of an afternoon and evening, visitors may observe elephants, lions, black rhino, white rhino, giraffe, gemsbok oryx, zebra, wildebeest, springbok, spotted hyena, and jackals, all using the same water source within meters of each other, their normal predator-prey dynamics temporarily suspended by the shared imperative of thirst.
The waterhole at Okaukuejo Rest Camp is the most celebrated in Etosha and one of the most extraordinary wildlife viewing locations in the world. Okaukuejo operates a floodlit waterhole accessible from a tiered viewing platform, and the animals that come to drink appear to be completely unperturbed by the presence of the camp facilities. After dark, when most safari experiences in Africa have concluded for the day, the show at Okaukuejo enters its most compelling phase. Black rhinoceroses, which are notoriously difficult to observe in the daytime, emerge from the surrounding bush in the darkness and approach the water with a caution born of centuries of persecution. Lions come to drink. Elephants engage in prolonged interactions at the waterhole's edge. Spotted hyenas conduct their rolling, cackling social rituals in the floodlit circle of visibility. A traveler who spends three or four nights at Okaukuejo and takes the time to watch the waterhole through the evening and early morning will accumulate wildlife sightings that would require weeks of conventional game drives in less concentrated viewing environments.
Black rhinoceros conservation is one of the great success stories of Etosha and Namibia more broadly. Namibia has consistently hosted one of the largest populations of black rhinos anywhere in the world, and Etosha is a stronghold for the species. The distinctive characteristic of the black rhino relative to its white cousin is the prehensile upper lip adapted for browsing on shrubs and trees, which gives the black rhino a more angular facial profile and a noticeably more aggressive temperament. Encounters with black rhinos on the ground are exhilarating experiences that remind visitors of the raw power and unpredictability of large mammalian wildlife.
Elephant herds of extraordinary size move through Etosha, particularly in the central and western sections of the park where dense bush provides the browse these large animals require. Family groups of twenty or thirty animals are common, and the temporary assembly of multiple groups at major waterholes can produce scenes of hundreds of elephants interacting in a complex social matrix that is fascinating to observe. The elephant population of Etosha has grown substantially since the park's establishment and the cessation of poaching pressure that characterized the 1970s and 1980s.
Etosha is one of the few places in Africa where a competent self-drive safari experience is genuinely feasible without a professional guide. The park's road network is extensive and well-maintained, the waterholes are clearly marked on the available maps, and the wildlife is sufficiently accustomed to vehicles that close approaches are routine. Travelers with their own hire vehicles and a willingness to spend several days methodically working the waterhole circuit will typically accumulate sightings that rival or exceed what is available from guided vehicles in more expensive and heavily touristed parks elsewhere in Africa.
The three main public rest camps within Etosha provide accommodation ranging from campsites to comfortable chalets. Okaukuejo in the west, Halali in the center, and Namutoni in the east each have their own waterholes, restaurants, and fuel supplies, making multi-night itineraries within the park straightforward to manage. Outside the park boundaries, a growing number of private lodges provide more luxurious alternatives, including several that offer guided night drives, which are not permitted within the park itself.
Caprivi Strip and the Zambezi Region
The Caprivi Strip, now officially known as the Zambezi Region, is a geographic anomaly that creates one of Namibia's most unusual travel experiences. The strip is a narrow corridor of land, approximately four hundred and fifty kilometers long but only between thirty and one hundred kilometers wide, that extends eastward from the main body of Namibia between Angola to the north and Botswana to the south, terminating at the point where Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia meet in the waters of the Zambezi River.
The shape of the Caprivi Strip was determined during the colonial partition of Africa at the Berlin Conference of 1884 and 1885, when Germany negotiated its inclusion in German South West Africa in exchange for concessions elsewhere, with the specific goal of providing German colonial territory with access to the Zambezi River and thereby a potential route to the east coast of Africa. The German strategy was frustrated by the Victoria Falls, which interrupted the Zambezi navigation they had anticipated, but the territorial anomaly thus created was inherited by the South African mandate and eventually by independent Namibia.
The ecological character of the Caprivi Strip is entirely different from the rest of Namibia. Rainfall here averages 600 to 700 millimeters annually, supporting extensive mopane and miombo woodland, broad floodplains, and the riverine forests that line the Kwando, Linyanti, and Chobe rivers along the strip's southern boundary. Hippos and crocodiles inhabit these rivers in significant numbers. Elephants cross freely between Namibia and the Botswana conservation areas of the Chobe and the Okavango. African wild dogs, painted wolves as they are sometimes called for the black-and-gold patterning of their coats, use the woodland corridors of the strip as part of their vast home ranges.
The Bwabwata National Park covers the central section of the Caprivi Strip and is notable as a conservation area where human settlement is permitted alongside wildlife, a challenging management model that reflects the region's historical occupation patterns. The western sector of the park contains significant elephant populations that interact with the farming communities of the Kavango people on the park's boundaries, creating human-wildlife conflict situations that the conservancy model is only beginning to address.
For travelers, the Caprivi Strip is valuable primarily as a transit corridor between the main Namibian attractions and the extraordinary wildlife areas of northern Botswana, including Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta, both of which are accessible within a day's drive from eastern Caprivi. Victoria Falls, in Zimbabwe and Zambia, is approximately three hours' drive from the eastern tip of the strip and can be incorporated into a broader southern African itinerary with relatively little additional effort.
Birding in the Caprivi Strip is exceptional, with the woodland and riparian habitats supporting species lists that overlap significantly with the richer avifaunas of Botswana and Zimbabwe. More than four hundred bird species have been recorded in the region, including numerous species that do not occur in the rest of Namibia. Pel's fishing owl, Slaty egret, Wattled crane, and various kingfisher and bee-eater species are among the sought-after birds that draw specialist birders to the region.
The Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Namibia has been recognized by UNESCO with two inscribed World Heritage Sites, both of which represent aspects of the country's extraordinary natural and cultural heritage that are genuinely of outstanding universal value.
Twyfelfontein, inscribed in 2007 under the full designation Twyfelfontein or /Ui-//aes, was the first rock art site in Africa to be inscribed under the Outstanding Universal Value criterion for cultural landscape significance. The site contains the largest concentration of rock engravings in Africa, with more than two thousand individual panels depicting the animal world of the Damaraland region as it existed and continues to exist today. The engravings were made by San hunter-gatherers over a period of at least 5,000 years, using stone tools to incise images into the fine-grained Etjo sandstone exposed at the valley's base. The site is remarkable not only for its scale but for the continuity and sophistication of the artistic tradition it documents, providing an unparalleled window into the spiritual and cognitive world of one of humanity's oldest cultural traditions.
The Namib Sand Sea, inscribed in 2013, covers approximately 3.1 million hectares of the central and southern Namib Desert and represents the world's only coastal fog desert with large dune fields. The Outstanding Universal Value of the Namib Sand Sea rests on its combination of geological, biological, and ecological significance. The dune system represents one of the most complex and best-studied examples of aeolian, or wind-driven, sediment dynamics in the world. The fog ecosystem that sustains life across this hyper-arid landscape is unique in the degree to which atmospheric moisture rather than rainfall drives biological productivity. The plant and animal communities of the Namib Sand Sea contain numerous endemic species found nowhere else on earth, products of millions of years of evolution in this isolated, stable, and unusual environment.

- Windhoek has a small number of private medical hospitals and clinics capable of providing emergency care and performing many routine procedures. Doctors – both general practitioners and specialists – as well as dentists generally have training and facilities that are comparable to U.S. standards. Facilities outside the capital vary widely. Several large towns have well-equipped facilities similar to those available in Windhoek, while smaller towns generally do not. Malaria is prevalent only in the north of the country. Malaria prophylaxis is not required in Windhoek, but is suggested for travel to the north.

- While in Namibia, individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different from what you find in the United States. The government does not require special access to public buildings, and some buildings are not wheelchair accessible. The government requires that all new government buildings include ramps. Some street corners in the capital, Windhoek, are outfitted with special signal crossings for the visually impaired.
