Recipe

Ingredients

  • Arepas:
  • 2 cups pre-cooked white or yellow cornmeal (also known as masarepa)
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (optional)
  • Toppings:
  • The possibilities for arepas are endless and lots of ideas can be found online, but some popular toppings include various kinds of cheese, meats (such as carnitas, shredded beef, or chicken), beans, sweet potatoes, eggs, avocado, salsa, etc.

Directions

  1. Arepas are a type of flatbread made from cornmeal that are popular in many Latin American countries. Here's a basic recipe for making arepas:
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal and salt.
  3. Gradually add the warm water to the cornmeal mixture, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon or your hands until a smooth dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a bit more warm water; if it's too wet, add a bit more cornmeal.
  4. Let the dough rest for 5-10 minutes to allow the cornmeal to absorb the water.
  5. Divide the dough into 8-10 equal portions and shape each portion into a flat disk about 3-4 inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick.
  6. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. If using, add the vegetable oil to the skillet and swirl to coat the surface.
  7. Add the arepas to the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy on the outside and cooked through on the inside.
  8. Serve the arepas hot, split open and filled with your favorite toppings.
