Norwegian skiing in the late nineteenth century was already a highly developed practice, with competitive traditions and a culture of skiing as both sport and survival skill. Amundsen embraced it fully, becoming an accomplished cross-country skier who could cover long distances over snow with efficiency and grace.

He also subjected himself to deliberate physical hardening. In one of the more remarkable stories from his youth, Amundsen formed the habit of sleeping with his bedroom windows open even during the worst Norwegian winters. He wanted to accustom his body to cold, to train his physiology to endure low temperatures without panic or rapid deterioration. This may seem like the romantic gesture of an adventurous teenager, but it reflects something genuine and important about Amundsen's approach to challenges: he believed that preparation was everything, that no amount of courage or determination could substitute for the careful, patient conditioning of body and mind.

He spent his summers sailing and fishing in the Oslofjord, learning practical seamanship at a time when it was still very much a craft passed from one generation to the next through direct experience. He was comfortable with boats, with ropes, with the basic physics of wind and water, in a way that many of his more academically educated contemporaries were not.

The Medical Studies He Never Completed

Amundsen's mother, Hanna, had her own ideas about her son's future. She was a practical and devoted woman who recognized her son's intelligence and wanted it directed toward a secure professional career. The profession she chose for him was medicine. In the Norway of the 1880s, medicine was one of the most respected careers available to an educated young man, offering both financial security and social status. Hanna was determined that Roald would become a doctor.

To please his mother, Amundsen enrolled in the university medical program in Christiania when he was eighteen years old. He later acknowledged that he made a genuine effort to apply himself to the coursework, but his heart was never in it. The lectures on anatomy and physiology, the laboratory exercises, the clinical rounds, the grinding routine of medical study -- all of it felt to him like an elaborate detour from the life he actually wanted to live. He endured the program rather than embraced it.

Then, in 1893, when Roald was twenty-one years old, his mother died. Hanna Amundsen's death was a profound personal loss, but it also removed the primary constraint on his ambitions. She had been the reason he was studying medicine, and with her gone, there was no longer any compelling reason to continue. He left the university shortly after her death and never returned.

The decision was irreversible and fully deliberate. Amundsen did not drift away from medicine out of weakness or inertia; he walked away from it as a decisive act, claiming his own life and his own purpose. He would dedicate himself entirely to becoming the explorer he had always known he was meant to be. From this point forward, his education would take place not in lecture halls but on ships, on ice, in the company of indigenous people who knew how to survive in environments that would kill an unprepared European.

The Death of a Dream: Abandoning Medicine

The decision to leave the medical program was not made casually or impulsively. Amundsen had genuinely tried to make a go of it. He understood that his mother's wishes deserved respect, and he had brought to the medical curriculum the same dogged application he brought to everything else. But there was a qualitative difference between forcing himself to endure something he disliked and finding the genuine inner momentum that drives a person toward their calling. Medicine never had that momentum for him. Every hour spent in the anatomy lecture hall was an hour he was not on a ship or on skis, and the accumulation of such hours felt to him like a slow suffocation.

When his mother died in 1893, the question that had been suspended by filial duty was suddenly urgent: What was he going to do with his life? The answer was already formed. He had known it since he was fifteen years old. He was going to be a polar explorer. Everything else had been either preparation or delay.

There was a social cost to this decision. In the Norway of the 1890s, a young man who abandoned a professional education to pursue what must have seemed like a wildly impractical ambition risked being viewed as irresponsible or eccentric. His family had invested in his education; walking away from it was, in a practical sense, a waste of their resources. His brothers continued on respectable career paths. Roald was the one who chose a different road.

He seems to have made the choice with little visible anguish. His memoirs describe it almost matter-of-factly, as if the decision had already been made in his heart long before it was made in practice, and the formal act of leaving university was simply the public acknowledgment of a reality that had long been private. He was not a man given to prolonged introspection or to expressing doubt about his own course. Once a decision was made, it was made, and he moved forward.

Learning the Craft of Seamanship

After leaving university, Amundsen threw himself into the practical work of becoming a trained mariner. He understood that polar exploration required genuine nautical expertise, not merely enthusiasm or physical fitness. He needed to know how to navigate a ship, how to read charts and stars, how to handle a vessel in difficult seas and extreme conditions.

He began by signing on as a common sailor, working his way through the ranks of the Norwegian merchant marine. He was willing to do the most basic, unglamorous work, hauling lines and scrubbing decks alongside men who had no idea they were working beside a future explorer of historic importance. He earned his sea legs the hard way, through years of practical experience on working ships, and he mastered the technical aspects of navigation, meteorology, and seamanship with the same focused intensity he brought to everything else.

In 1895, when he was twenty-three years old, he passed his examination for the rank of mate, a significant professional milestone. He continued studying and working, building the credentials he would need for the expeditions he was planning.

He was also, during these years, cultivating relationships with the Norwegian exploration community. He attended lectures by Nansen and other leading polar figures, read everything published about Arctic and Antarctic exploration, and made himself known as a young man of exceptional ability and seriousness. The community was small enough that a dedicated, intelligent young person could make an impression, and Amundsen made a very strong one.

His study of previous expeditions was comprehensive and analytical. He read the accounts of Franklin's lost expedition and the numerous search voyages that had followed it, noting carefully what had gone wrong and why. He studied the accounts of James Clark Ross, who had made important discoveries in both the Arctic and Antarctic. He read Nansen's accounts of his Arctic voyages and was particularly struck by Nansen's assessment of the superiority of skis over other forms of winter locomotion and by Nansen's recognition of the importance of indigenous techniques for cold-weather survival.

He also studied the expeditions that had failed for reasons of equipment and supply. The pattern that emerged from this study was clear: most polar expedition failures were not the result of bad luck or cowardice but of systematic errors in planning and preparation. Too little food, wrong clothing, unreliable equipment, overconfidence about distance and time, underestimation of cold. These were not random misfortunes; they were predictable consequences of inadequate preparation. And if they were predictable, they could be prevented.

This analytical approach to learning from the past was itself a form of intellectual rigor unusual in the exploration world of the period, where the emphasis was often on courage and endurance rather than on methodical planning. Amundsen combined the physical toughness of the traditional polar explorer with a planner's mind, and it was this combination that made him genuinely exceptional.

The Belgica Expedition: the First Antarctic Winter

The opportunity that would launch Amundsen's polar career arrived in 1897, when he was accepted as first mate on the Belgica, a Belgian scientific expedition to Antarctica led by the naval officer Adrien de Gerlache. The Belgica expedition was the first organized scientific expedition to work extensively in Antarctic waters, and it would make history in a way its organizers had not anticipated: it became the first expedition to spend a winter south of the Antarctic Circle.

The crew of the Belgica was multinational and remarkable. In addition to de Gerlache as leader, the ship carried Frederick Cook, an American physician and explorer who would later claim, controversially, to have reached the North Pole; Henryk Arctowski, a Polish geophysicist; Antoni Dobrowolski, another Polish scientist; Emil Racovita, a Romanian zoologist; and various other scientists and sailors. Amundsen was the only Norwegian among them, and he brought to the crew the seamanship and cold-weather experience that the others largely lacked.

The Belgica left Antwerp in August 1897 and made its way southward through the Atlantic, stopping at various ports before crossing the Drake Passage into Antarctic waters. In February 1898, while exploring the waters along the Antarctic Peninsula, the ship became trapped in the sea ice. Unable to break free, the crew faced the terrifying prospect of being frozen in for the approaching Antarctic winter.

The Antarctic winter is not merely cold; it is a period of total darkness lasting for months, during which temperatures plunge to extremes that can kill an unprepared person in minutes, and the psychological pressure of confinement, darkness, and uncertainty can be as lethal as the physical cold. No European expedition had ever wintered in Antarctic waters, and no one on the Belgica had any idea of what to expect.

The crew endured the winter with difficulty. Several men suffered from what we would now recognize as seasonal affective disorder and depression, struggling with the endless darkness and the sense of being trapped and helpless. There were episodes of bizarre behavior, near-breakdowns, and serious illness. The ship's cook went mad. Several crew members developed what was later identified as scurvy, a condition caused by vitamin C deficiency that produces devastating physical deterioration.

Frederick Cook, the American physician, played a crucial role in the expedition's survival. He diagnosed the scurvy and prescribed a treatment based on fresh meat, specifically the liver and flesh of penguins and seals, which provided the missing vitamins. He also implemented a program of light therapy, using the ship's lanterns to simulate sunlight and combat the psychological effects of perpetual darkness. Cook's measures almost certainly saved lives.

For Amundsen, the Belgica expedition was an education in the most literal and brutal sense. He observed Cook's medical interventions and understood their value. He saw how critical nutrition was in extreme cold, how the body's demands changed under polar conditions, and how the standard European approach of relying on processed and preserved foods was dangerously inadequate. He also saw the consequences of poor planning and insufficient preparation for the specific challenges of polar survival.

When the ice finally released the Belgica in March 1899, after thirteen months of imprisonment, Amundsen had absorbed lessons that he would carry with him for the rest of his career. The most important of them was this: survival in the polar regions required not the imposition of European habits and techniques upon an alien environment, but rather the careful adaptation of behavior to the specific demands of that environment, learning from those who had already mastered it over centuries of necessity.

Learning From the Inuit: the Northwest Passage Expedition

Amundsen returned from the Belgica expedition with a clearer sense of what he needed to do next. He had his goal: to navigate the Northwest Passage, the mythical sea route through the Arctic archipelago of northern Canada that connected the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. European explorers had been attempting this passage for nearly four centuries, ever since Martin Frobisher made his first attempt in 1576. Many had died in the attempt. None had succeeded in a single continuous voyage.

To prepare for this ambitious undertaking, Amundsen needed several things: a ship, a crew, financial backing, and the knowledge that would allow him to survive in the Canadian Arctic. For the first three, he worked systematically over several years, earning his captain's certificate in 1900 and then securing the backing of Norwegian investors and scientific institutions. The ship he chose was the Gjoa, a small sealing vessel of wooden construction, forty-seven tons, approximately seventy feet long, with a shallow draft that would allow it to navigate the shallow waters of the Arctic archipelago. It was not an imposing vessel, but Amundsen had chosen it deliberately. He understood that the Northwest Passage was too shallow and ice-choked for a large ship; what was needed was something small and maneuverable, able to take shelter in coves and inlets that would be inaccessible to a more substantial vessel.

For the knowledge, he went to the one man in Norway best positioned to provide it: Fridtjof Nansen, the great Arctic explorer who had become a national hero through his cross-Arctic Expedition of 1893 to 1896, in which he and Hjalmar Johansen had attempted to reach the North Pole by letting their specially built ship, the Fram, drift with the polar ice. Nansen became Amundsen's mentor and supporter, providing practical advice, helping secure funding, and lending his prestigious name to the younger man's endeavors. The relationship between them was central to Amundsen's career; without Nansen's support, the Northwest Passage expedition might never have left port.

But there was another source of knowledge that Amundsen sought out with equal determination, one that most European explorers either ignored or actively disdained: the indigenous people of the Arctic, specifically the various Inuit nations who had lived in the Canadian Arctic for thousands of years and had developed techniques of survival that were vastly more effective than anything European civilization had produced. Amundsen's respect for Inuit knowledge was not merely abstract or theoretical; it was the foundation of his entire approach to polar travel.

The Gjoa expedition departed from Christiania harbor on June 16, 1903, under somewhat dramatic circumstances. Amundsen and his crew of six men slipped away in the middle of the night to avoid creditors who were threatening to seize the ship. The total crew consisted of Amundsen as captain, Godfred Hansen as second-in-command, Anton Lund as first mate, Peder Ristvedt as second engineer, Helmer Hansen as helmsman, Adolf Lindstrom as cook, and Gustav Juel Wiik as assistant engineer and meteorologist. It was a small company for such a grand undertaking, but Amundsen had chosen each man carefully for his specific skills and his ability to get along with others in confined conditions for an extended period.

The Gjoa sailed north along the Norwegian coast, then west and north toward Greenland, and then into the labyrinthine waters of the Canadian Arctic archipelago. The early part of the voyage went reasonably well, and by August 1903 the ship had entered Lancaster Sound, the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage. They worked their way westward through Prince Regent Inlet and James Ross Strait, navigating carefully through waters that were incompletely charted and treacherous with ice and shallow shoals.

In September 1903, they found a natural harbor on the southeastern coast of King William Island, a sheltered cove that Amundsen named Gjoa Haven after his ship. The harbor was ideal: protected from the worst of the ice, with fresh water nearby, and situated in an area frequented by the Netsilik Inuit, whose knowledge of the region would prove invaluable. Amundsen made the decision to winter there, not just for one season but for two, conducting scientific observations and learning everything he could from the local people.

The Netsilik Inuit were, as Amundsen described them, among the most isolated of all the Inuit peoples, living in one of the most remote and challenging environments on earth. They had developed over many generations a complete and sophisticated technology for surviving in the extreme cold: sleds built of bone and wood and sinew, pulled by teams of trained dogs; clothing made from carefully selected and prepared animal skins that provided warmth and water resistance far beyond anything European technology could match; hunting techniques adapted to the specific behavior of the animals of the region; and a deep knowledge of ice conditions, weather patterns, and navigation that allowed them to move across the frozen landscape with a confidence and efficiency that astonished European observers.

Amundsen approached the Netsilik not as curiosities or as subjects for scientific study, but as people from whom he had an enormous amount to learn. He made a genuine effort to communicate with them, learning elements of their language and making the transaction of knowledge reciprocal rather than extractive. He and his crew adopted Inuit clothing, recognizing that the layered, loose-fitting garments made from seal and caribou skin were far superior to the heavy woolen and canvas clothing that European explorers typically wore. They studied Inuit methods of dog handling, understanding that the sled dog was not merely a beast of burden but a partner whose behavior, physical condition, and training required expert knowledge and careful management.

The two winters at Gjoa Haven were not merely a period of waiting out the ice. They were an intensive education in Arctic survival. Amundsen also used the time to conduct systematic scientific observations, particularly of the Earth's magnetic field. The location of the magnetic North Pole, which is distinct from the geographic North Pole, had been approximately determined by previous expeditions, but Amundsen's careful measurements provided much more precise data and demonstrated something surprising: the magnetic pole does not remain stationary but moves in a regular pattern over time. This was a significant scientific discovery, and it was one of the formal scientific objectives of the expedition.

By the summer of 1905, the ice conditions allowed the Gjoa to continue westward. Amundsen and his crew pushed through the remaining western sections of the Northwest Passage with growing excitement. On August 26, 1905, they encountered a whaling ship from San Francisco, the Charles Hanson, coming from the west. This encounter confirmed what Amundsen had dared to hope: they had succeeded in traversing the passage. The eastern and western waters of the Arctic had been connected in a single continuous voyage for the first time in human history.

The Gjoa's voyage westward was not without difficulties. The waters were shallow and poorly charted, and the ship frequently had to navigate by sounding depth as it went, feeling its way through channels where no European vessel had ever sailed. There were moments of acute danger when the ship seemed certain to run aground on uncharted shoals. But Amundsen's meticulous preparation, his shallow-drafted vessel, and the navigation skills he had developed over years of practice carried them through.

The expedition wintered again, this time at Herschel Island off the northern Yukon coast, before finally reaching Nome, Alaska, in August 1906. Amundsen sent a telegram from Eagle, Alaska, announcing the completion of the Northwest Passage, a message that electrified the exploration world. The achievement had taken three years and navigated approximately five thousand kilometers of Arctic waters. By the end of the war, his financial situation was worse than ever, a problem that would persist through the rest of his career.

The Northeast Passage: a Lesser-Known Achievement

In 1918, Amundsen undertook an expedition through the Northeast Passage, the Arctic sea route north of the Russian and Siberian coasts that connects the Atlantic to the Pacific on the eastern side of Eurasia. This route, the complement to the Northwest Passage he had navigated in 1906, had been first transited by the Swedish explorer Adolf Erik Nordenskiold in 1878 to 1880. Amundsen's expedition used the specially built ship Maud, designed for polar conditions, and was intended partly as a scientific voyage and partly as another attempt to drift across the polar basin as Nansen had done.

The expedition proved more difficult and less productive than planned. On June 18, 1928, the Latham 47 took off from Tromso and headed north. It was never heard from again.

No wreckage was ever found, no bodies were ever recovered. The aircraft simply disappeared. Searches were conducted, and months later a fragment of a float from the Latham 47 was discovered near the island of Fugloya off the northern Norwegian coast, providing the only physical evidence of the aircraft's fate. The most probable explanation is that the aircraft came down in heavy seas, was destroyed by the impact and the waves, and sank.

Roald Amundsen was fifty-five years old when he disappeared. He had spent his adult life in the service of exploration, had accomplished more than any other polar explorer of his era, and had died as he had lived: in the act of pushing beyond the limits, heading north into the unknown.

What Happened to Nobile

The Fram Museum and Amundsen's Lasting Presence in Norway

Amundsen's legacy in Norway is both physical and cultural. The polar ship Fram, which he used for the South Pole expedition, is preserved in Oslo at the Fram Museum, which also contains extensive collections related to Norwegian polar exploration. The museum is one of Norway's most visited cultural institutions and serves as a continuing reminder of the polar tradition that Amundsen did so much to create.

The Gjoa, the ship of the Northwest Passage expedition, was preserved for many years in San Francisco, where it arrived at the end of the voyage in 1906. In 1972, it was returned to Norway and is now displayed at the Fram Museum as well.

Amundsen's name has been given to numerous features of the polar landscape: the Amundsen Sea off the coast of Antarctica, the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station which has been operated continuously at the South Pole since 1956, and various other geographical features in both the Arctic and Antarctic. The Amundsen-Scott station, named for the two great rivals of 1911, is a fitting monument to both men and to the human desire to understand the most remote places on earth.

In Norway, Amundsen is celebrated not merely as an explorer but as a national hero of the highest order, ranking with such figures as Nansen and Leif Erikson in the pantheon of Norwegian achievement. His image appears on Norwegian currency and postage stamps, and his name is attached to streets, schools, and institutions throughout the country. He set out to accomplish extraordinary things, he prepared for them with extraordinary care, and he accomplished them. He brought his men home alive. And then, at the end, he gave his own life in the attempt to bring others home too.

The disappearance of the Latham 47 and its crew on June 18, 1928, remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of polar exploration. The aircraft took off from Tromso under normal conditions and headed north, and then simply ceased to exist as far as the rest of the world was concerned. No distress signal was received. No wreckage was found, apart from the float fragment discovered months later.

Various theories have been advanced to explain the disappearance. The most common is that the aircraft encountered severe weather over the Barents Sea, was unable to maintain altitude, and came down in heavy seas, where the hull was broken up by waves and sank. The Latham 47 was a flying boat, not designed to withstand ocean swells, and even a relatively gentle swell can quickly destroy an aircraft that has landed in open water.

Other theories have suggested mechanical failure, navigational error leading the aircraft away from the search area and into dangerous conditions, or even a structural failure at altitude. None of these theories can be proven or disproven, because the evidence is simply insufficient.

What is clear is that Amundsen and his companions died quickly, without time to send any message or take any significant action. The speed of the disappearance suggests a sudden catastrophic event rather than a prolonged struggle for survival. In this respect, if there is any comfort to be found, it is that Amundsen likely died without prolonged suffering.

His body was never found, and he has no grave. He rests somewhere in the Barents Sea, along with the French crew members who accompanied him, in waters that were themselves one of the frontiers of his world. For a man who spent his life at the edge of the world, it is perhaps a fitting end.
