Aratikaay a Masala Pulusu (Spiced Raw Banana Curry)

Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/4 teaspoon black mustard seeds
- 8 curry leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
- 4 raw bananas
- 1/2 tablespoons tamarind concentrate
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 4 cloves garlic
- 1/2 piece ginger, 1 inch in length
- 2 whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon rice
Directions
- Grind to a paste, while adding a few drops of water, the following: cumin, garlic, ginger, cloves, rice. Keep aside.
- Raw bananas should be cut into larger than bite sized pieces (about one and half inch thickness) after peeling the skin.
- Boil these pieces in 3 cups of water until soft. Remove from heat, drain water and keep aside.
- In a deep skillet, heat oil, add mustard seeds and when seeds start popping add curry leaves and the above paste. Fry on moderate heat for one minute.
- Add 1.5 cups water, tamarind paste, and the banana pieces.
- Also add red chili powder, tumeric and salt. Let cook on medium heat for 15 minutes or until the gravy thickens.
