Endangered Species

The species at risk of extinction and the efforts to protect them.

An endangered species is a plant, animal, fungus, or other living organism whose total population has declined to a point where its continued existence is at serious risk. The study of extinction risk sits at the intersection of biology, geography, law, and public policy, and the global register of species in trouble has become one of the most closely watched indicators of the health of the natural world.

Overview

Extinction itself is a natural process. Across the roughly 3.8 billion years that life has existed on Earth, the overwhelming majority of species that have ever evolved are no longer alive. Paleontologists document five previous mass extinction events in the fossil record, including the end-Permian extinction about 252 million years ago and the end-Cretaceous extinction about 66 million years ago that closed the age of the non-avian dinosaurs. Between these episodes, species have continued to disappear at a slow, background rate as habitats shift, climates change, and evolutionary competition plays out over geological time.

What makes the current moment different is the pace. Scholarly assessments synthesized by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, and by peer-reviewed studies supported by institutions such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, conclude that contemporary extinction rates are estimated to be on the order of 100 to 1,000 times higher than the long-term background rate. Exact figures vary depending on the taxonomic group, the time window, and the methods used, but the order-of-magnitude finding is now a mainstream position.

Because this accelerated loss is driven principally by human activity rather than by external planetary events, many scientists describe the present era as a human-driven biodiversity crisis. The concept of an endangered species emerged as a practical response: a way to identify which organisms are most vulnerable, to prioritize conservation action, and to create legal and diplomatic instruments that can slow, and in some cases reverse, population decline. IUCN Red List Categories

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is the most widely used global framework for classifying extinction risk. Assessments are produced by specialist groups of volunteer scientists coordinated by the IUCN Species Survival Commission and are revised as new data become available. Each species is placed into one of nine categories defined by quantitative criteria covering population size, rate of decline, geographic range, and the number of mature individuals.

The three categories grouped under the heading of threatened are Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable. The wider scheme also includes Extinct, Extinct in the Wild, Near Threatened, Least Concern, Data Deficient, and Not Evaluated. A species may be moved between categories as its situation changes, and reassessments are a routine part of the Red List cycle.

Extinct (EX)

No reasonable doubt that the last individual has died. Used only when exhaustive surveys across the historical range have failed to record an individual.

Extinct in the Wild (EW)

Survives only in cultivation, captivity, or as a naturalized population well outside the historical range. Reintroduction may still be possible.

Critically Endangered (CR)

Faces an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. Often applied to species with fewer than 250 mature individuals or very steep population declines.

Endangered (EN)

Faces a very high risk of extinction in the wild. Applied where populations are small, fragmented, or in rapid decline across the natural range.

Vulnerable (VU)

Faces a high risk of extinction in the medium-term future. The least severe of the three threatened categories but still a priority for conservation action.

Near Threatened (NT)

Does not qualify as threatened today but is likely to qualify in the near future without sustained conservation work.

Least Concern (LC)

Widespread, abundant, and not currently under significant pressure. Inclusion confirms that the species has been evaluated and found to be stable.

Data Deficient and Not Evaluated

Data Deficient means the available information is insufficient to assess risk. Not Evaluated means the species has not yet been examined against Red List criteria.

Documented Extinctions

More than nine hundred species have been recorded as Extinct on the IUCN Red List since the year 1500, the conventional starting point for modern records. The true figure, including undocumented losses of small-range invertebrates and plants, is almost certainly higher. A handful of cases have become cultural touchstones because they illustrate how quickly a once-abundant species can disappear when human pressures combine with biological vulnerability.

The dodo (Raphus cucullatus), a flightless bird endemic to the island of Mauritius, was last reliably reported around 1662. Sailors and introduced predators such as pigs, rats, and macaques devastated the population within decades of European arrival. The passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) of North America is an even starker example. In the early nineteenth century, flocks were estimated in the billions and reportedly darkened the skies for hours as they passed. Relentless commercial hunting and the fragmentation of the eastern forests reduced the population to a single captive bird named Martha, who died at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914.

The Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine (Thylacinus cynocephalus), was a carnivorous marsupial native to mainland Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea. Government bounties and habitat change eliminated the mainland population in prehistory and the island population by the twentieth century. The last known individual died in the Hobart Zoo in 1936. The Caribbean monk seal (Neomonachus tropicalis) was declared extinct in 1952 after more than four centuries of hunting for oil and skins. The baiji (Lipotes vexillifer), a freshwater dolphin endemic to China's Yangtze River, was declared functionally extinct following a 2006 survey that failed to detect any individuals despite intensive searching. Each of these losses entered the historical record only after extinction became impossible to reverse.

Famous Endangered Species

A small group of animals has come to stand in the public imagination for the wider biodiversity crisis. These flagship species attract the majority of public funding and media attention, and organizations such as WWF, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Zoological Society of London, and Fauna and Flora International use them to communicate the scale of the problem.

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), native to a narrow band of bamboo forest in western China, has become a global symbol of conservation. Sustained habitat protection and captive-breeding programs led to a 2016 Red List reassessment that moved the species from Endangered to Vulnerable, a rare case of genuine improvement. African elephants, now recognized as two species (the African savanna elephant Loxodonta africana and the African forest elephant Loxodonta cyclotis), remain under significant pressure from habitat loss and the ivory trade. Wild tigers (Panthera tigris) number roughly five thousand across a fragmented Asian range that once stretched from the Caspian Sea to the Indonesian island of Bali.

Rhinoceros species illustrate the range of possible outcomes. The southern white rhinoceros has recovered from a population of roughly one hundred individuals in the late nineteenth century to more than fifteen thousand today. The black rhinoceros remains Critically Endangered. The Javan rhinoceros survives only in a single protected population of fewer than eighty animals in Ujung Kulon National Park in Indonesia.

The three species of orangutan (Bornean, Sumatran, and the recently described Tapanuli) are all Critically Endangered owing to the conversion of rainforest to oil palm plantations. Mountain gorillas in the Virunga Mountains and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest have increased slowly under intensive protection in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Snow leopards inhabit the high mountains of central Asia, where small prey populations and retaliatory killing after livestock losses are the primary threats. The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), the largest animal known to have lived on Earth, has recovered partially from industrial whaling but remains Endangered. The vaquita (Phocoena sinus), a small porpoise endemic to the northern Gulf of California in Mexico, is the most endangered marine mammal in the world, with recent surveys detecting roughly ten individuals. The Sumatran tiger and the California condor complete a widely cited list of species whose fate is being actively contested.

The Amphibian Crisis

Amphibians are the most threatened vertebrate class on Earth. Approximately forty-one percent of assessed amphibian species are categorized as threatened on the IUCN Red List, a proportion substantially higher than for mammals, birds, or reptiles. Permeable skin, complex life cycles that often require both aquatic and terrestrial habitats, and narrow geographic ranges combine to make frogs, salamanders, and caecilians acutely sensitive to environmental change.

The most dramatic single driver of amphibian decline is an emergent infectious disease called chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungi Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and, in salamanders, Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal). The pathogen disrupts the function of amphibian skin, which is critical for water and ion balance, and can kill entire populations within weeks of arrival. Bd has been documented on every continent where amphibians occur and is implicated in the decline or extinction of more than five hundred species.

The golden toad (Incilius periglenes) of the Monteverde cloud forest in Costa Rica became an emblematic early warning. Last seen in 1989 and declared Extinct shortly afterward, it was the first amphibian whose disappearance was firmly linked to a combination of climate stress and chytridiomycosis. In the decades since, institutions including the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, the Zoological Society of London, and the Amphibian Survival Alliance have built captive assurance colonies and research programs intended to preserve genetic diversity while habitat and disease interventions are developed in the wild.

Principal Threats

The pressures that push species toward extinction are varied, but researchers working with the IUCN, UNEP-WCMC, and the Convention on Biological Diversity have converged on a short list of direct drivers.

Habitat loss and degradation is the single largest factor. The conversion of forest, wetland, grassland, and coastal habitat to agriculture, pasture, plantation, urban development, and infrastructure removes the physical space that wild populations need. Tropical deforestation in the Amazon, the Congo Basin, and insular Southeast Asia accounts for a substantial share of the threatened-species register. Overexploitation through hunting, fishing, logging, and the wildlife trade removes individuals faster than populations can reproduce. The illegal wildlife trade alone is estimated to generate between ten and twenty-three billion United States dollars each year, making it one of the largest illicit economies in the world. It is a particular threat to rhinoceroses, pangolins, elephants, sharks, sea turtles, and numerous reptiles and songbirds.

Climate change compounds every other threat. Shifting temperature and precipitation regimes move habitat zones poleward or upslope, disrupt breeding and migration timing, bleach coral reefs, and force species to track suitable conditions across fragmented landscapes where corridors may no longer exist. Invasive species, introduced deliberately or accidentally outside their native range, are especially destructive on islands, where native wildlife often evolved without defenses against novel predators or competitors. Rats, cats, goats, snakes, and introduced plant pathogens have driven many of the best-documented recent extinctions.

Pollution ranges from plastic debris in the oceans to nutrient runoff that creates coastal dead zones, to pesticides that affect non-target insects and the birds and bats that depend on them. Emerging infectious disease, including amphibian chytridiomycosis, white-nose syndrome in bats, and sarcoptic mange in wombats, rounds out the list of pressures that conservation programs must address simultaneously.

Conservation Approaches

Conservation biologists distinguish between in situ approaches, which protect species in the wild, and ex situ approaches, which maintain populations in captivity or in gene banks. The most effective recovery programs combine the two.

Protected areas remain the backbone of in situ conservation. National parks, wilderness reserves, indigenous and community conserved areas, private reserves, and transboundary protected landscapes together cover roughly seventeen percent of the world's land surface and eight percent of marine areas under the current global targets. UNEP-WCMC maintains the World Database on Protected Areas as the authoritative register of these sites. Habitat restoration, including forest and wetland regeneration, is increasingly treated as a complement to strict protection.

Captive breeding and reintroduction have been decisive for a small but important set of species. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums coordinates Species Survival Plans that manage captive populations as genetically connected metapopulations. Translocation, the deliberate movement of individuals between populations, is used to restore gene flow in fragmented ranges. Genetic rescue has been applied in isolated populations of Florida panthers and Isle Royale wolves, where inbreeding threatened long-term viability.

More contested approaches are now entering the field. Assisted migration proposes moving species beyond their historical ranges to track suitable climate, an idea that raises both ecological and ethical questions. De-extinction research, carried out by private laboratories and a small number of academic groups on candidates including the woolly mammoth and the thylacine, has generated extensive debate within the conservation community about whether such efforts divert funding from work on living species.

Success Stories

The contemporary picture is not only one of loss. Sustained conservation effort, supported by durable legal protection and adequate funding, has reversed the trajectory of a meaningful number of species.

The bald eagle, the national bird of the United States, was reduced to fewer than five hundred breeding pairs in the contiguous forty-eight states by the early 1960s, owing largely to the effects of the pesticide DDT on eggshell thickness. A ban on DDT in 1972, combined with listing under the Endangered Species Act, enabled a recovery to tens of thousands of pairs, and the species was delisted in 2007. Grey whales, once hunted almost to extinction in the North Pacific, have rebounded under an international moratorium on commercial whaling. The American bison, reduced to perhaps a few hundred individuals in the late nineteenth century, now numbers more than a quarter of a million across public and private herds.

The California condor provides one of the most dramatic recoveries. By 1987 only twenty-two birds remained, and the entire wild population was taken into captivity. A coordinated breeding program run by the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, the Los Angeles Zoo, and federal partners has produced several hundred birds that now fly free in California, Arizona, Utah, and Baja California. The Arabian oryx was declared Extinct in the Wild in 1972 and subsequently reintroduced from captive stock to Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, becoming the first animal to be downlisted from Extinct in the Wild to Vulnerable. The giant panda was moved from Endangered to Vulnerable in 2016 after a sustained increase in the wild population. The Iberian lynx, the world's most endangered cat in the 1990s, has more than doubled in number thanks to a Spanish and Portuguese recovery program. The reintroduction of grey wolves to Yellowstone National Park in 1995 triggered a widely studied cascade of ecological effects and has been followed by recoveries in the western Great Lakes region and, more recently, in the Colorado Rockies.

Ocean and Marine Species

The open ocean, coastal seas, and the fresh waters that feed them contain species that are among the most difficult to monitor and the most exposed to commercial pressure. Fisheries data reviewed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations indicate that roughly a third of assessed fish stocks are fished at biologically unsustainable levels. Bycatch, the incidental capture of non-target species such as turtles, seabirds, and small cetaceans, compounds the effect on threatened populations.

The vaquita is the extreme case. Despite a complete prohibition on gillnet fishing in its core range, entanglement in nets set illegally for the totoaba, a fish whose swim bladder commands high prices in Asian markets, has driven the population to the brink. Recent acoustic and visual surveys have detected only a handful of individuals. The North Atlantic right whale, with roughly three hundred and sixty animals remaining, faces ongoing losses to ship strikes and entanglement in fixed fishing gear along the eastern seaboard of North America.

Sea turtle species occupy a range of Red List categories. The hawksbill and Kemp's ridley remain Critically Endangered, while the green turtle has shown population increases at several major nesting beaches following decades of beach protection. Shark populations have declined by more than seventy percent in the open ocean since 1970 according to widely cited peer-reviewed estimates, driven by the fin trade and by incidental capture in longline and purse-seine fisheries. Role of Zoos, Aquariums, and Ex Situ Conservation

Modern accredited zoos and aquariums have moved well beyond their nineteenth-century origins as menageries. Institutions that meet the standards of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums participate in cooperative breeding programs known as Species Survival Plans, maintain studbooks that track pedigrees across member collections, and fund field conservation in the native ranges of the species they hold. Aquariums play the analogous role for marine and freshwater species, supporting research on coral reef resilience, seahorses, sturgeon, and cetacean health.

Frozen zoos preserve living cells, gametes, and tissues for species whose populations are too small to manage through conventional breeding. The Frozen Zoo at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research holds cell lines from more than ten thousand individuals representing more than a thousand species, and has been used to restore genetic diversity in the Californian population of the critically endangered black-footed ferret. Parallel efforts at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, the Zoological Society of London, and other research centers support reproductive biology, wildlife disease surveillance, and species recovery planning.

The botanical equivalent is the global network of seed banks. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault on the Norwegian archipelago of Spitsbergen stores duplicates of seed collections from more than a thousand national and regional gene banks, while the Millennium Seed Bank at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, holds seed from a substantial share of the world's wild plant species. These collections cannot substitute for habitat protection, but they provide an insurance policy against the loss of genetic material that evolution has assembled over millions of years.
